Only about the drive. You can pretty much install it anywhere you want.
But no matter where you install you will still need room on the c drive
for installation files.

But yeah, get the drive first.

For Adam J

Core 2 duo 2.4 GHz, 6 GB RAM, Vista 64, ASUS EN9600GT 512MB with latest driver as of last week
Primary monitor Eizo 1600 x 1200
Secondary monitor Eizo 1024 x 1280 (rotated to portrait)
Also running Ultramon for 2nd monitor taskbar management, but disabling Ultramon doesn't seem to make any difference.
Trend Micro Internet Security (TMIS).
Having Firefox 3 and Outlook on or off makes no difference to PS CS4 performance.
PS CS3 performs fine with Ultramon, TMIS, Outlook and Firefox 3 running.
No tablet installed at the moment, but I have one ready to install.

With PS CS4 32 (for example) opened and not being used, the Task Manager Process list shows the photoshop.exe CPU value changing every second or so (variable period) between 0 and 1, and sometimes 2.

I'm concentrating on PS CS4 32-bit first so I can get it working optimally with all my plugins (hopefully). No plugins installed yet except Topaz Adjust, which has been updated for PS CS4.
No discernible lag with text.
Slight delay in redrawing, only slightly slower than PS CS3 (with Use for Image Display off - otherwise no image display - oldGPU reg key loaded - made a useful difference - and PS cache set to more than 1 - made a big difference).
Brush cursor very laggy before I start drawing, then slightly laggy while drawing, unless brush is very small (no lag either way with CS3), then good while moving cursor without drawing. Switch to another app like FireFox and switch back, and the brush cursor is very laggy again without drawing.

Cheers, John

Noticed something interesting... Had the same problem with brush lag, clone tool lag, whatnot. Tried everything.
Had a thought - updated DirectX, there is a new Nov 2008 update. All lagging is gone. Might be a coincedence but worth trying.

Sorry for the broken record, but I can't resist once again advocating Filter Factory (FF) for tasks such as this.

To divide a circle into 8 equal pie sections, select the circle and put it on a separate layer via CTRL-J. With that layer highlighted invoke FF and enter the following in the R G and B boxes:

R: d%128==0?0:255

G: 255

B: 255

FF splits the circle into 1024 angles. d is the angle

The R code says "If the angle divided by 128 leaves zero remainder, set R =0, else set R=255.

Thus, where d is a multiple of 128, the color is cyan (blue and green). Elsewhere it is white.

What could be cleaner?

Despite Filter Factory's agility (or the even more versatile Filter Foundry <http://www.telegraphics.com.au/svn/filterfoundry/trunk/dist/README.html>) I'd still want to do it with vector masks.

But that's just me, and my famous pickiness.

Phos

Correct me if I'm not following you. I think you are referring to what you do with the eight pie sections after they have been formed, and using them as masks is one way to go. How you delineate them is one thing, and how you make masks of them and deploy the masks is another. Using FF to form the pie sections to begin with and then selecting each piece of pie, in turn, as a mask seems as good a way to go as any.

I'm saying I'd create the pie wedges as vector objects, and keep and use them as vectors so they'd re-render as cleanly as possible if I decided I wanted to move, rotate or resize them. Once you've created a pixel-based selection or mask, you're kind of limited in what you can do with them and still maintain original quality.

I've learned the hard way too many times about trying to tweak pixel-based objects and not having them meet the quality standards I enjoy, so I do what I can to use vectors wherever possible.

David Nicol,

I agree with you, the rotate canvas tool is awesome... as are all of the new features. I'm not saying the features are a disaster, but the quality of programming and performance of photoshop CS4... that is the disaster. With GPU, this program should be lighting quick... Without GPU it should be lighting quick. :) Its neither... However CS3 is lightning quick without GPU! So CS4 introduced GPU support but the performance is worse than the old display code they were using in CS3!!! Whats the point ?

And its not the GPU, because in software display mode in CS4... its almost as slow as with GPU... and its still far slower than CS3 was.

Do i think they can fix this? Sure... When? I dont know. But why was it released this way? And what is the real cause for this severe problem?

I'm glad there are trial versions.

Please dont tell me its because us 30inch guys run at 2560x1600 because that would be an entire industry of graphic artists.

The system i tested on...

Intel QX6700 (quadcore extreme)
Intel D975XBX2 motherboard
Nvidia 8800GTX
8GB Ram
Latest Nvidia drivers (I also tried running the newest beta drivers)
HP 30inch monitor - Native resolution 2560x1600
Wacom Intous 3
Local Raid 0 (sata)
Vista 64bit.

Ok, here's another data point I need: are people who are experiencing the lag using a tablet?

If so, do you have the latest drivers?

Also, do the performance problems continue if you use a mouse instead of a tablet to drive the PS UI?

This information would be very helpful for those of us investigating this problem.

Thanks again,
-Adam

Same thing, identical whether using mouse or tablet. Both systems are Win XP SP3. One is single monitor 1920x1200, the other is dual monitor 1600x1200.

I'm on XP. Sorry for not mentioning initially.

And no, as far as I can see my PS version is 10.0

I didn't know it is normal that ACR launches when editing a smart object. This would mean that the .jpg file is still stored inside the smart object, whereas I had thought that once the .jpg file had been opened in PS, it's a raster layer like any other and stored as such inside the smart object (and not in the original file format).

Two suggestions:
First one is easy.... second one not so easy.

FIRST SUGGESTION:
Go into Control Panel>Printers
Set another printer as default (Preferably Microsoft XPS Document Writer or Adobe PDF.)
See if PS works now.

SECOND SUGGESTION

1) Use Programs and Features to delete all Adobe applications. If it has Adobe in it's name, it needs to be removed.

2) Delete the following Adobe folders:
C:\Program Files\Adobe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe
When you delete these not everything will come off (mostly things from Acrobat). When you run into a file that will not delete, just delete everything else instead.

4) Goto c:\ProgramData (This is a hidden folder) and delete the FlexNet folder.

3) Hit (Windows Key + R) to get your Run Command.
Type in RegEdit and press OK.
Expand HKEY_Local_Machine.
Expand Software.
Delete the folder that is plainly called "Adobe".

4) Run the clean script at level 4. When it says level 1 or 2, just type 4. When it is finished run it again at level 4 just to be sure.

5) Reinstall.

I tried the disc in another machine with XP and it loaded right away. Any ideas why it won't load on my new machine? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Photoshop CS4 file saving problem: When no file name is specified, Photoshop saves file to the root directory of the drive instead of the current folder. It auto names the image with the name of the folder that was active. Can this be fixed?

BTW: I was using "save for web"--not sure if it that matters.

Last night my portable hard drive, where I had Photoshop installed, died. So I tried to re-install it on my proper hard drive. It says it conflicts with Photoshop. I tried to uninstall it but the uninstaller couldn't find the files (because they're on the dead hard drive). So I got an uninstaller program and used that. Now Photoshop doesn't register as being installed by Windows, but somehow the Photoshop installer still finds it. I just went through the registry editor and deleted every photoshop thing I could by hand, but it still thinks it's installed. I just got my Tablet back from being fixed and so having my pc break on me feels very frustrating. Any way around this?

Other check way could be use the 'Windows Task Manager' and check the process of Photoshop. For 32bit PS, it is Photoshop.exe *32. Or you could find the system information from Photoshop menu->Help->System Info. You could find X64 at the end of the Adobe Photoshop Version.

Up to about 2 weeks ago when I fire up PS the opening splash window only took about 15 - 20 seconds to cycle through and PS opens up. Since then it takes a very long time to open. The "Reading Preferences" takes nearly a minute or so then all the other race through and PS opens. Why would the "Reading Preferences" take no time at all one day then the next take over a minute? I haven't changed anything to my knowledge in the Preferences tabs to cause this.

Any ideas?

Today, I opened a file to print and sharpened it with Smart Sharpen. Now, I have always been unhappy with the speed, it was Veery slow. Sometimes with my stitched files, it could take many minutes. Well, today, I'm down to seconds! I mean the largest file I found took about 16 seconds, where the same file earlier took 200 to 300 seconds! I have absolutely no idea why!

Some time back, it seemed to me that the Smart Sharpen suddenly was taking longer than it used to, and I chalked it up to the increased file size. I would wait and wait even for the preview to finish. If I dragged the preview box around, it would leave a transparent background which would slowly fill in.

It seems like it's not writing to scratch. Opening PS, I see about 75 MB in scratch. Opening a file in PS, it jumps to 570 MB, but now, it does not increase in size after sharpening. That's not the behavior I've seen before. After Smart Sharp on similar sized files, I would see scratch size go up to2 or three Gigs, sometimes as large as 6G. Now, no change at all!

The box does not have to be checked. The checkbox just means to hide that app after launching it. The fact that Photoshop is listed there at all means its set to launch on boot. Click Photoshop in the list, then click the minus button so that Photoshop does not appear in the list.

And READ the dialog windows. Don't assume you know what a checkbox means.

Yes, I am using a G5 and running CS4 on OSX 10.4.11.

Could it be a video card issue? Which card are you using?

Could be some other cursor software you have installed... obviously you've got something for screencasts. Have you tried booting into safe mode (hold down shift while booting)?

I can't replicate the issue on my system - Quad 2.66 MacPro/OS10.5.5/Intuos 3

Thanks again,

I'll try safe mode on my main machine tomorrow.

On the Mac Book Pro, I have a GeForce 8600M GT and on the Mac Pro the RadeonX1900.

I don't have any special cursor software and Screenflow was installed after I noticed the problem.

I'm wondering if there is some CS4 setting somewhere that I'm missing since this is going on on two separate machines. . .

Thanks again for the help.

I know this doesn't speak to your question per se, Jim, but for something like your © symbol, I much prefer to apply them as a custom shape.

Size them however and whenever you want, and keep them dead-clean.

I just started to use CS4, set up all of my color preferences and opened up an image. I thought that it looked a little bit lighter than what I remembered so I opened up the same image in CS3 and it does look different. The 3/4 tones to the shadows all appear slightly lighter than in CS3. I checked the soft proofing in CS4 and I found that when I select the Monitor RGB and apply soft proofing, that fixes the issue. But as soon as I try and select any other profile the image appears lighter than the same soft proof in CS3. Any ideas? And yes my monitor is calibrated, I have the Eizo CG 241 and I am using and 8 Core Mac Pro with 18gb ram and running OS 10.5.5.

We're testing it now. Without antialiasing took about 8 minutes. With antialiasing... is still running.

Yeah, that might be a problem in the antialiasing code. I just don't know why it shows up in your image and not on our other test images -- or if it'll even show up for other users. It's probably some special case in the rasterizer that the rasterizer team will have to track down.

As for size - Photoshop should rasterize and work up to the document limit of 300,000 x 300,000 pixels. Of course, that might take longer....

Thanks Chris--

In the "Import PDF" dialog box, the natural size comes up: 50.149 x 50.143. If I change the resolution to 1200ppi (a little over 60,000 x 60,000 pixels) and hit "OK" I get an alert box: "A number between 0.001 and 26.666 is required. Closest value inserted." When I hit OK to that, I get 26.666 x 26.663 at 1200 ppi.

Unless there's another way than File->Open to rasterize an AI file in PS, PS won't let me build larger than 32,000 pixels on a side.

If this helps: the AI file was originally built by importing postscript code into AI CS4. That code was found here: <http://www.graphicdesignforum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=387813&postcount=7>

I updated some of the value definitions (number of windings of the spiral, width of the lines, distance between the lines) but didn't otherwise change the code.

I manually corrected some of the curves in Illustrator, applied a "simplify path" on the outer parts of the spiral arms, then made 18 duplicates, adjusted the widths and the color, and saved.

If there's any other information I can provide, please let me know. I appreciate your attention to my file.

The last word on the subject is: Had a tutor in . . . . went over everything . . . . seems CS has this problem with the Epson 3800 . . . . dark prints and noticeable separations in gradients . . . . got a good tech support person in CA . . . . sounds like a way of getting there but not from here. He had me assign the profile Adobe RGB (1998) to the print with no color management. In the printer driver color management dialogue, Mode: Adobe RGB. In Print Settings, choose your Media and activate Advanced Settings>Superfine 1440 dpi and disable Finest. At the end I get a print I can live with and very close to my display . . . . it's a beautiful printer. I believe my trouble is in Photoshop. I just wanted to learn how to make it work for me and I'm not as discriminating as you people. I'm almost there. When I went to CS I ditched my copy of Photoshop 7. I've been told 7 doesn't have the problem. The tutor told me she thought that my prints were wonderful and that I'm anal retentive . . . . I guess I'm a perfectionist. Sigh . . . . perhaps . . . . I don't know . . . . I don't think so. The way I see it is, if I wouldn't buy what I print how can I expect anyone else to buy them.

I have read everything advised here. There wasn't a whole lot they could tell me that you guys haven't already told me. I've never tried the no color management. When I've worked so hard in Photoshop to create something I hate not using Photoshop to determine the colors. Guess I will need to get my head around this one.

Be well and be happy.

a locked background layer is a nuisance to anyone creating serious composites. Still doesn't make sense why you can't just click the "lock" icon to unlock it. "Photoshop help" wasn't even able to answer me the question. I've worked with photoshop since 2.0. It always bothered me since they changed it whenever that was, but not enough to take the time to really figure out how to unlock it. I always just duplicated the layer and deleted the original. option click will make my life easier.

Ok...here's my CS4 + video card on a 1st generation Mac Pro running Leopard 10.5.5 story.
I had two 7300GT cards installed and I could turn on "Enable OpenGl Drawing", but only "Vertical Sync" could be enabled under Advanced Settings.
I then installed an 8800GT card in the first slot and left the 2nd slot with the 7300GT card for a total of two cards and 4 monitors.
When I restarted Photoshop with the new 8800 card installed, GPU Settings no longer detected Video Card and Enable OpenGl Drawing was dimmed out.
So then I installed AllowOldGPUS.plugin, and everything worked including ALL the features in Advanced Settings.
What's up with this....? It's my understanding that the plugin is for older cards not newer ones, and that the 8800 should work without having to use the plugin.
So strange, considering it worked with my 7300 cards, which are lesser cards.
Also....anyone have any idea of what all those setting are for in "Advanced Settings"...what they do and if you need to turn them on or not?

ok... on to the 2nd best answer...

start with uninstalling ALL ADOBE APPS, if they're still on your system using add/remove programs from the control panel. including reader and flash, etc.

then delete the adobe folder in c:\program files. then delete the HIDDEN folder C:\Documents and Settings\yourUserName\Application Data\Adobe

(that's the xp path, you'll need to work out the vista path for user data)

again in xp, not sure how to do this in vista, but you can eitehr figure it out, or someone can post the procedure -- to view/access hidden/system files and folders, open windows explorer, click tool> folder options> view and UNCHECK hide protected os files and select "show hidden files and folders". that'll get you the ability to see the application data folder. delete it.

if you have a registry cleaner, now's the time to run it. pull everything "Adobe" and photoshop related from the registry. registry mechanic is 30 bux for 3 systems. might be a good investment (i'm not affiliated with them):
<http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/?ref=google_1000&gclid=CPySirTf4ZYCFRoSFQodczCKOA>

then run check disk on your drive. right click the drive in explorer. select properties> tools. select "error checking". click "check now". CHECK THE BOXES FOR "auto fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".

that may require a reboot and could take a while if it starts to find problems on the disk. depending on disk size and health, a 250 gig, HEALTHY drive should take about an hour to run on a good core2duo (or similar amd) system.

once you're back up, go here and redownload the script:

<http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb402767&sliceId=2>

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR IT ON THAT PAGE FIRST!

especially:

Note: Level 3 is a hidden option and thus is not listed in the main interface.
To access Level 3 just type "3"( without quotes) when prompted for the
level.

given your problems, i'd run it at level 2 first, reboot and immediately run it at level 3.

again... READ THE INSTRUCTIONS AND FOLLOW THEM FULLY BEFORE RUNNING THE SCRIPT.

then redownlaod the latest versions of flash and adobe reader from adobe.com. install them first. reboot if necessary.

THEN reinstall photoshop.

if all this doesn't work, you're looking at a reformat. sorry.

Nick, you may already know this, but a partition doesn't give you performance unless the drive is not used for other virtual memory operations. I mention this since you made a point of saying your scratch was on a partition. While you can reserve space for scratch with a partition, you need a drive that doesn't have other data going through the same bus to other partitions.

Hi Brett,

The render settings control how the 3D aspects of the layer appear. They won't change the quality of the underlying diffuse texture map. So if you are taking the diffuse map and using it as a tile somewhere else it won't matter.

sounds like a permissions problem. are you running as administrator? if not, try that.

if so, reset the preferences (crtl-alt-shift during startup. you'll get a box asking if you want to delete the settings, if you don't get the box, you didn't get it fast enough, try again!)

if that gets you in, when you change the scratch disk again, make sure the user you're using has read/write/create/delete (maybe execute?) permissions to the location you choose for the scratch files.

xrdbear:Just to say that I have the same problem with my paid for CS4

like 25% or 33% then the image is blurry. Strangely, as has been said,
if you have it in a floating window and you pick it up to move it then
it instantly goes sharp and goes blurry again the moment you release it.
This is with a Wacom pen, just the same as with the mouse.

Ditto.
Win Ultimate x64
Intel DG965WH motherboard with Q6600@2.4GHz & 8GB RAM
nVidia 9800 GTX+ with 178.24 drivers

Turn off the OpenGL and the image stays sharp and extremely slow.

This is a MAJOR problem with the OpenGL implementation.

I'll see what I can find out for you. Are you running 10.0.1, and on what OS XP, or Vista?

The basic difference between a) and b) is that a) will call to the ACR plug-in to process the data and display it's dialog, whereas b) edits the data directly in Ps. I suspect there may be an issue in trying to get the ACR dialog to display and may have been fixed in 4.5 or 4.6.

I had PS CS3 installed on my laptop and desktop computers but my desktop computer motherboard died forcing me to get a new computer.

Now I find that I can't activate CS3 on the new computer until I deactivate my old desktop license but I have no way of doing this.

Is there any one I can contact about this or do I really have to buy the software over again?

thanks for any help,
chuck

Chuck,

Just contact Adobe via the telephone number provided in the activation dialog and they can help you activate again once you explain the problem.

My motherboard died a while back too...but it only forced me to get a new motherboard. ;)

Daryl

Hey Guys.

For years I have been waiting for what seems to be both:

A/ One of the most IMPORTANT functional additions that PS needs and
B/ One of the EASIEST functional additions to add to PS.

And what is it: BRUSH DAMPING!!!
Just a simple variable slider like Painter has (NOT that totally ineffectual brush "smoothing" checkbox that PS currently has!).

Messy freehand line problems will become a thing of the past.

2D Illustrators will stop the migration to Corel Painter!!!

So why haven't the Adobe guys implemented it before?

Worried that we'll complain that it "slows down" the line drawing? No problem! We know that this is the nature of damping - it's a trade-off with speed, and we can always slide that variable slider back and forth between 0% and 100% damping!

Worried that we won't bother buying Ye Olde Illustrator for line work? No problem! We still need Illustrator for the more precise, technical work!

(And yes, I know that it's high time that Wacom helped-out the Adobe guys by improving their tablet technology, but they won't as long as they keep their aggressive monopoly of the tablet market.)

How many of you guys do their freehand linework either:

1/ on paper and scan-in or
2/ by using Corel Painter

How many of you guys would prefer to do it all in Photoshop?????

WHO'S WITH ME GUYS? :D

Best, Rick.

Only about the drive. You can pretty much install it anywhere you want.
But no matter where you install you will still need room on the c drive
for installation files.

But yeah, get the drive first.

If you are that low on space Its time to buy a bigger hard drive and/or clean off the crap. any drive over 75% full is a disaster waiting to happen. Hard drives are cheap now.

I think I understand what is happening now with the blurring of the image.

When you convert to a 3D tiled painting it creates 3X3 tiles of the image on the 3D plane, but it does it within the same pixel size/canvas size of the original image. So, when you sample in the 3D tiled view and clone across it samples the image at 1/3 the size, and then converts that back into the diffuse texture (the smartobject of the original image) which means it gets upsampled 3X to get back to full size. Clearly not ideal, and the image is getting trashed along the way unfortunately. It would be okay for loose painterly patterns etc, but it's no good at all for anything with even moderate detail.

I am trying to figure out a workaround that makes use of this system because the tiled view makes it very quick to remove seams, but so far I haven't hit on one that is any quicker than just doing this the old-fashioned way with things like the offset filter (or 3rd party software)

Any chance this could be tuned up a bit by Adobe?

If you set the render settings to paint mask on the tiled painting you will see the image turn red, This indicates that paint applied will be oversampled as you found out. To rectify you can change the camera position, 3d object scale or image size to get to a good painting resolution. In the case of tiled painting you can use image size and increase by 300% to get to a 1:1 match. The healing brush is working across all the tiles, but there is an update bug, if you force a render by clicking on the Render Settings button in the 3d panel and click Ok without changing anything all the tiles will get updated.

Great - thanks Ekim!
I tried resizing the canvas before converting to a tiled painting, but it didn't occur to me to do it after - that works great!

A question about quality: do the render settings impact the image quality for cloning purposes? I.e should the anti-aliasing be adjusted for best result (or anything else for that matter) or is that stuff irrelevant for this type of task?

I'll try the update bug workaround for the healing brush - thanks for the help.

Glenn - yes, I am telling you to update the driver because most of the bugs are in the drivers. If the driver does not fix the bug, then you need to follow up with the video card vendor because they may not have updated the driver for your model and OS yet.

Driver bugs can be hardware and OS dependent, and we have seen some video card firmware bugs as well (updates are normally in the driver or posted with the drivers).

No, it does not follow that there are known good drivers and cards -- because we could not test the drivers and cards on your exact system. The same card and driver version might work on vista on and Intel Core2 system, and fail on Vista for a Pentium4 system, or XPSP3, or XPSP2, or if you have a certain game installed, or a certain utility installed, or while running a certain screensaver, or ......

On a large sampling of Windows systems, with a large sampling of video cards (current, recent, and some ancient), on clean and dirty (lots of apps, lots of history) systems, with AMD and Intel CPUs, with a variety of motherboards and chipsets -- Photoshop CS4 worked without a problem.

But again, just because a model of video card and version of driver work on my systems, don't mean that they will work correctly on your system.

From my own tinkering, the only fix I can suggest is to render the font samples using the same colour as the font name menu item. Right now, it appears that the font preview text is always rendered in black. There are other menus that ignore the UI colour selection and always render dark-on-light, but that's squarely in the consistency/aesthetic realm rather than a usability/functionality bug.

I am completely baffled with this and am thinking that it's something obvious I am just missing.

I have a photo open and click on the "Create new fill or adjustments layer" button at the bottom of the Layers panel.

In CS3 I able to create a layer (say Levels) and apply it, then select the eraser tool and delete sections of that adjustment layer that I did not want revealing an unaltered section of the original photo behind it.

I can not seem to do this in CS4. I can add the layer and select the eraser tool but it will not delete anything.

:s Help??

Thanks.

don't forget to read the instructions! :)

on that page you'll find this note:

Start out at Level 2 and advance to Level 3 only if you still have issues
installing your CS3 applications. Running this script removes shared components
created during the installation of CS3 applications.

Note: Level 3 is a hidden option and thus is not listed in the main interface.
To access Level 3 just type "3"( without quotes) when prompted for the

I just installed Photoshop CS4, both the 32 and 64 bit versions (part of the "Master Collection"). After opening the programs I changed the scratch disk location to two separate drives other than where Photoshop resides, where it had placed said file as a default. Now neither Photoshop versions will open.
I get the following message:
"Could not open a scratch file because the scratch file is locked..."
Just one problem, there is no scratch file visible on either of the two drives...
My operating system is Vista Ultimate on a 64 bit Quad CPU machine with 8Gb of ram, two Raptor HDs, four 750Gb HDs configured into one RAID 5 drive and Nvida GEForce 8800GTS graphics card.
Has anyone here experienced a similar problem???
Cheers,
Michael
