Yup, I see it on XP Pro SP3. I hadn't mentioned it until now because it's not a big problem for me. Just weird.

For troubleshooting, all users affected should maybe give more info:
Screen Resolution; for each screen if there are several.
Videocard type; brand; firmware version; Driver version
CPU type, speed; motherboard; amount of memory
Windows version, peculiarities (window blinds, anti-virus)
Photoshop settings: Cache, amount of ram allocated, what Open Gl settings etc.
How does the issue appear, when (immediately?)

permitted a trial download? Not me!

You are permitted to a trial prior to purchasing. No one is obligated to purchase it now.

"How exactly have you hacked your OS to try and display black menus? "

Chris, he selected Black as the window color, and it seems that the drop down menus of Photoshop are influenced by that setting, while the font color for the menu does not automatically switch to white to be readable.

I clicked on About Photoshop to see if I had the 64 bit version running (i have 2 installs (Regular CS4 and 64 bit CS4) of Ps on my machine.

Would not the splash screen say 64 bit version? They both said Photoshop CS4

Ah ha...I see what you say... great call.
In my preferences, it says Available ram 7225mb. And 32 bit would only be able to see a max of 3 to 3.5 mb ram. good call again but they really should have put it on the splash screen.

All that being said, what do you think of how mine (64bit) is set up (in Preferences)
Available ram 7225 mb
ideal range 3974-5202mb
Let photoshop use 5924 mb (82%) is what i put in there
Scratch disk
E is what I am using western digital (7200 rpm) internal for scratch
My C drive has os and the program on a Raptor 10K rpm

History States 41
Cache levels 7
Open gl is enabled

would appreciate your comments.

Bob

Looks good, I do not remember what the engineers used to say for 64 bits, if you can allow 100%. Check: <http://blogs.adobe.com/scottbyer/2007/09/photoshop_world.html>

As for the Scratch, the raptor is faster, but I guess that the pagefile is there too... pagefile on E and Scratch on C?
Try and time it...
I usually have fewer history states, but am not running 64 bits.
Do you have bigger tiles enabled?

since you asked, how about you get an external drive, a backup util, do a full backup and then format? you can easily restore what you need of your data that way. reinstall programs fresh and apply all patches. once everything is working perfectly, do another backup and if you ever have problems like this again, you'll have that to fall back on. every now and then, while things are working correctly, take another backup.

it's up to you. i'm not telling you to do anything. i just jumped in to say you can not know you DON'T have bad sectors unless you're psychic.

and you did say you "need professional help". that's what a professional would (is) tell(ing) you.

Did you get the "are you sure you want to delete your preferences" warning when you followed the procedure from the FAQ?
Using a registry cleaner might help.

Following the suggestion of getting an external drive could be a lifesaver for all your files and documents. Hard Drives do crash.

Also, you won't get italicised text here if you capitalize your "I"s

Create the vector shape you want, create a new layer with gradient, ALT+Drag the vector mask.

Thanks PECourtejoie, I never knew about that shortcut! Handy.

However I don't see how this was seen as an improvement to something that seems pretty simple. You are still going through extra steps since you have to dismiss the initial gradient dialog, then bring it back up again after alt-dragging the vector mask. And then you still have to delete your original solid fill layer.

Maybe the feature is still available through scripting? Then somebody could add it to the Scripts menu and then assign a keyboard shortcut to it.

I still don't understand why the menu entry was retired... there isn't another feature that easily replaces it. Bummer.
