[Photoshop-Haven] Printer Recommendations?

I'm hoping I can get some help with deciding on a new printer. Right now I am pretty happy with the Canon iP4300 that I use. It's pretty reliable, if I print photos it's on Kodak paper (semi gloss works really well), and it does a good job. However, I keep thinking about getting a wide-format printer, where I could print 11 x 14 or possibly larger.

And I am confused and going crazy! I have had recommendations for the new Canon 9500, for the previous version, the 9000. I've also had several Epsons recommended. But in both cases, I see some extremely bad reviews (setup and reconfiguration problems for the Canon as well as dull prints and little help from Canon's tech held desk people). Wasted ink with the Epsons—incorrect messages demanding running the cleaning utilities, clogged print heads, etc. etc. (Apparently the Epson inks will clog if you aren't using the printer pretty constantly, at least that's what it sounds like.)

So here's my dilemma. I want to spend around $500 to $750 (but could go a little higher if I get a couple of glowing reviews.) I will print on various papers, in fact a capability to print on "art papers" would be nice. I will be printing a variety of images, some of them essentially straight photos (with some light editing to enhance the image) as well as massively edited and manipulated images, including my own original art done in Photoshop and Illustrator. I want to be able to print at least to 11 X 14 and not have to go insane resetting the printer—both in software and physically—to print different sizes. And I don't want to have to print frequently (in other words, the print cartridges should be fine sitting unused for a week or two) to avoid clogged cartridges or print heads.

And the printer has to talk nicely with Macs! (OS 10.4.11 Tiger right now, probably Leopard or Snow Leopard later this year, if I finally upgrade.)

So have I asked for the impossible? I have, over the years, used Epson, HP, and Canon, my last two (including my current iP4300) were Canons.

Thanks everyone!

[Photoshop-Haven] Re: "Tilt & Shift" effect - how was it done?

Duplicate the layer
Apply gaussian blur to taste
Create layer mask
Apply linear gradient to layer mask

Play arounf until you get it, you can create a shallow depth of field look with this.

Happy Creating and remember most of all to have fun ~ Hugz, Lynn

Detailed instructions/rules to be perused at your convenience.

cid:image001.jpg@01C9B8FF.70C6AE50

BOBBI AND DIANE INTRODUCE A NEW CHALLENGE!

A new challenge!  CREATOR’S CHOICE!  Another wonderful idea of our Mod, Lynn who also created the Galore Challenge!  We will dispense with the Friday graphic challenge, and Creator’s Choice will be the replacement.  For those of you loving that graphic challenge, we will occasionally throw in a few as surprise challenges.

What is Creator’s Choice?  Imagination!  YOURS!  There are no tutorials with this challenge, you will use your imagination and wonderful creativity to produce and design your own special effects.  The result will be your own personal tag.

Lynn’s instructions are below.  This will be a weekly challenge, on Fridays, starting April 3rd.  If you have any questions regarding the challenge, please contact Lynn, Diane or Bobbi.

We all hope this will instill a desire to design your own tags.  You’ll also be able to try out many plug ins!  LOL

This is what Lynn’s rules will be:

CREATOR’S CHOICE~~~A Lynn Inspiration!

We are going to start out very slowly; accelerating progressively as our designs get more adventuresome.  Please copy these instructions somewhere, they will only be repeated occasionally.

PLEASE NOTE:  EACH WEEK THE MANDATORY ITEM WILL CHANGE, but the rest of the five items will change only occasionally.

Example for one week:

Mandatory: make a CIRCLE or ELLIPSE

A transparent image 700 x 500

A pattern/gradient/texture

A tube or graphic

A plugin or filter

Word art or doodle

An example:

cid:image002.png@01C9B8FF.70C6AE50

All I’ve done here is duplicate 3 times, rearrange the ellipses and change the blend mode to multiply.

(I then changed it back for purposes of the example)

cid:image003.png@01C9B8FF.70C6AE50     cid:image004.png@01C9B8FF.70C6AE50

Happy Creating!  Lynn

[ellenspsp_sharing] new info about forwarding ...

hi folks..ok
i just got responses from some people i sent this to that are not at this group. [and the masks that came thru also]
 here's the deal
they can NOT access the previews nor the masks because those are jpg's stored at the group (all they get is the home page and note the don't have permissions to access..etc).. they CAN left click on the psp file below and save it prperly..

so when forwarding anything, you will have to re-attach the previews or masks or any files that are jpg or gif i think..or keep them as inserted in the body of the email.

Re: [photoshop-beginners] History Option

Yep, I wasn't recommending using 100, I was just replying to his/her(?) request
on how to change the history states to 100. On the plus side, if his computer runs
out of available RAM, then it'll start using the paging file which will slow the program
down but he still should be able to get the 100 history states he wants although
at the cost of speed.

Hope your computer has lots of RAM available, because this is going to take
a whole lot of memory!

[fnftwo] Help with Filters Unlimited

BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:2.1
N:;Ellie'svcard
FN:Ellie'svcard
EMAIL;PREF;INTERNET:Ellie@vcard.com
REV:20090410T024118Z
END:VCARD
For some unknown reason I'm having issues with Filters Unlimited. I have it
installed fine, plus the filters that come with it are there for instance
Special Effects 1 and 2 etc. The problem I'm having is, none of the other
filters that I normally would have in FU will install into it. I go to
import filters, I locate the one I want, find it, click on it, but the
folder appears to be empty, yet I know they are there. Most I can get to
use by going to file locations, then adding them to PSP that way, but it's
such a pain having them outside of FU. Any Ideas??? I await your comments
Thanks

Fw: [ellenspsp_sharing] yahoos new tiny pics

the upside is that the emails are NOT huge file sizes though.. the attachments are actually at the groups..not in the email..that's just a preview hotlink to them.
this is good for some groups.. i can see this now, and for those that want to go no mail and not miss much, or those that can't handle the huge files coming in in droves. this will be much easier for those still on dial up also.
yes, it does take two extra steps to saving some previews and such, which , like you said increase history, etc..

and.. as before you HAVE to be signed into a valid YAHOO ID to access at each group. which has both good and not so good aspects, lol (not so good being only to remember to sign in so you don't get frustrated)

If you all will just click on the tiny pic the larger item will appear in a new window,
I'm not sure how this will affect psp tubes. Unfortunately by doing this,
it gives us more cookies and history to delete as it bogs down our pc's!

Hugs,
Arella

Re: Re: about attachments, SONJA Fwd: [ellenspsp_sharing] Duckling again

Most groups have the settings done to enable ONLY list members to view the messages - and also the other "web features".  You can find out this if you visit a group NOT being logged in.

If you can view a group's messages when NOT being logged in, it means that group has the messages publically available = available for just anyone to read (and with the attachments at the website probably possible to snag from).  And also see the group members's Yahoo ID and more.  Personally I never join any group with such settings as I think things should be "private" within each individual group.

Some list owners hide the member list also from the members.  I am one of those. :-)  That is in order to protect the list members among other things from having their e-mail addresses harvested by spammers.

In the midst of writing this I logged out from YahooGroups and went to check this group.  The messages are not made public, neither is the list of members.  Only one thing makes me a bit puzzled, and that is the fact that under the word "Home" there is the word "Attachments".  I do hope that YahooGroups have NOT made this new web attachment feature accessible for just anyone...  It would be a good idea to check this out, I think.

What ever we are not pleased with, we should tell YahooGroups - just as they asked us in the Moderator Central message I forwarded here a couple of hours ago. :-)
