Thanks PECourtejoie, I never knew about that shortcut! Handy.

However I don't see how this was seen as an improvement to something that seems pretty simple. You are still going through extra steps since you have to dismiss the initial gradient dialog, then bring it back up again after alt-dragging the vector mask. And then you still have to delete your original solid fill layer.

Maybe the feature is still available through scripting? Then somebody could add it to the Scripts menu and then assign a keyboard shortcut to it.

I still don't understand why the menu entry was retired... there isn't another feature that easily replaces it. Bummer.

You are welcome!

I still don't understand why the menu entry was retired... Maybe not a
lot of reports of usage...
Still, there are workarounds.
It would have been more useful to have the change layer content available
on a right-click....

I wonder if an action could be written to copy the mask from below layer, delete below layer...

Have you tried with a flattened copy of one image?
Are you images low key, high key color, black and white?
Could you post your printer settings (you can host your images on pixentral)
What blacks are you using?Photo or Matte? what profile do you use?

Look at this page for more info: <http://www.computer-darkroom.com/ps10_print/ps10_print_1.htm>

I have heard that this warning can occur spuriously sometimes.

If nothing changes when you click update. i would ignore it.

:)

My only fear is that something's wrong (otherwise I would probably not get the error message) and I don't experience any problems now, but when I get to CS4 or 5, I suddenly realize that all my files have broken text layers ...

The lock options are not selectable from the Layer context menu. If you have multiple layers selected, when you unlock one via Lock All it unlocks all the layers. You can also select a group and use Lock all dialog to unlock all the layers within the group. You can also drag any lock to the trash to unlock an individual layer (including a background layer).

TOPIC: 3D tiled painting not working?

Cloning and painting on a 3d object uses projection paint. If the surface is not facing you there will be interpolation to apply the data to the surface. You also need to take into account the model view which may not be a 1 to 1 match with the texture on the model. The Paint Render mode helps identify good painting areas. Another point to consider is the Paint fall off angle, which controls how much paint is applied to a surface as it curves away from the forward facing surface. See the Photoshop help for Setting the paint fall off angle, and Identify paintable areas.

Thanks for the information.

However, I am not sure it applies to the 3D tiled painting since the object created is just a flat plane, that, theoretically at least, I would think is flat to camera. If it's still using projection painting or fall off curves etc. then that is beyond the user's control I guess.

Anyway, something in Pshop appears to need a tweak with this tool - it's not terribly useful if the cloning etc does not match for quality (and healing brush doesn't work with the tiling function on my machine at least) and if the 'automatic' object setup doesn't work well for the purpose there's nothing much the user can do except skip it and do it by hand.

I'd love to see it sorted out though - it's a potentially *very* handy function.

Thanks,
b

That is what I'm going to do when I run the trial at 1280 x 1024 where CS, CS2, & CS3 run without screen problems.

For those that are experiencing the lag - let's get back to trying to figure out the problem here - I need some more information.

Can you please tell me the following:

1. What your screen resolution is?
2. How many monitors (and what size) you're running?
3. If any other applications (including virus checkers) are running when PS CS4 is running?

If you are experiencing the performance lag, take a look at Task Manager and see if Photoshop is the top process on the list. If it isn't some other process may be running and taking resources from PS.

thanks,
-Adam

Primary monitor 1600 x 1200
Secondary monitor 1680 x 1050

Home:
Primary monitor 1900 x 1200
Secondary monitor 1280 x 1024

What do you mean by 'top process' ? PID number?

1. Screen resolution 1280x1064
2. Single 19" screen
3. Other programs AVG Internet Security, Spybot, Outlook, IE7, but I have also run with all other programs disabled, to no effect

PS always top of the list in task manager

Note that the lag is not just in drawing but also very bad in the text tool

I unchecked the preferences box that said to USE a second plug_in folder. Did you just uninstall the plugin or did you uncheck a second plugin folder in the prefs?

I cannot reboot my system during weekday business hours, so don't know if it will return after a boot. Will learn that tomorrow morning. Intend to try it first thing in the AM.

Same here with regard to rather odd behaviour that if you have a floating window and pick it up, it will go sharp and then blurry again as you relase the mouse.

I missing the Adobe Dialog feature in Save As, too. It was a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE timesaver for me to be able to specify my own favorite folders for saving. The five available from the OS are useless and force me to manually navigate the file tree at every single save. The lost time caused by the deletion of this feature more than undoes the time savings from the new click-and-drag-on the image curves feature.

I hope Adobe brings the Adobe Dialog back. If the statement is true that there was probably "too much trouble with compatibility issues on different OSs," it's ridiculous. How difficult can it be to program for a list of favorite folders?

The workflow is getting slower with each new release. In the last version of Bridge, they took away the ability to select a bunch of photos and drag them to the destination folder of your choice. Now, the file tree returns automatically to view the source directory, instead of the destination directory. Like I want to drag files from source to source!
