Fran, you could describe what you want to do with an image editor. What features are important?

There are different editors for different audiences. If Photoshop CS3 and GIMP are not suited for you then we really can't tell what would be suited for you. Those apps can do anything.

Hi,

I've found similar problems with Vista and CS3/4, mine is with Photoshop CS with Vista and I didn't find the right solution yet :

- With the Vista Aero theme selected, somme Aero effects are disturbing to work on photoshop : moving layers is slowered (like the windows of the explorer), it's not much but disturbing for work.
- If I select the Vista Basic theme I don't have this slowing layers issue but then I have the big lag/delay problem when painting with the brush (impossible to work).

- So logically I tried to select the Aero Theme + deactivate some of the bothering Aero options (Enable deskstop composition/animate windows). But when I do so Vista in fact automatically select the Vista Basic Theme, so I have the lag problem with brush again...

It seems a bit odd not to be able to work with protoshop properly on Vista, some of you may have a solution to this ?

Or is it back to XP and that's it ?

Many thanks in advance,

What system specs do you have?

I don't think CS is supported under Vista, but, it should work OK. Vista will require more RAM so *that* could reduce the amount for Photoshop and make life a little bit more difficult for it.......

See if there is an update for CS too....that may help.

Thanks Chris,

Forgot to mention, sorry, it's a brand new PC : Mother Card Asus P5Q, Intel Processor E8400 Core Duo 3 Ghz, 4 Go Ram, NVidia GeForce 8800 GT, 2xHD 500 Go Sata II 7200T.

This version of CS used to work fine on my old PC with XP.

The point is I've read (on this forum) about similar lags problems with CS3 so I wonder in which way it comes from using PS with Vista...

uuummm..it should be OK with those specs.

I would reset Areo back to default for now and try it in XP compatibility mode.

And have a fiddle with the preference. ( don't forget to close CS and reopen to enable the changes).

Lower the History states to 10 or 15.

Up the ram usage to 80% - you might have tweak this abit

Move the cache up and down to see if that makes a difference.

Place a scratch disk on drive 2.

Also, if it's a new machine there is usually an initial period when Vista is indexing, prefetching, etc which can slow disk access temporarily.

What size images and brushes are you using?......try the brushes with smoothing and other options disabled and see if that helps.

That's a big brave assertion from an anonymous coward. Get real. Our

So you weren't judging him when you claimed you could state he was

Sorted - after several stubborn hours today! "My Display" (HP utility) software did not recognize the hardware (Monitor) so I set about the uninstall/reinstall yet again. This time when start-up repair offered to restore to a working state (yet again) I refused to allow. A long war of attrition ended with a "welcome" screen after which came numerous clicks and reboots of the monitor. My intention was then to find the hardware driver in the "My Display" folder (read that somewhere) - but "My display" came up as working ! Re-set of resolution didn't work but I proceeded to update the graphics card and saw different messages from before. When update was complete a check of Display Properties showed a selection of 1680x1050 screens and the difference in Photoshop viewing at 50% is remarkable - no interpolation artefacts. I've conveyed to HP as much detail as possible in the hope they'll figure out where the conflicts lie. Hope this helps some other frustrated soul - thanks for all the help and suggestions - wouldn't have persecered without your encouragement, Cheers Derek Simpson

Don't you just love the "value added" stuff that people like HP like to add to your computer, when the main thing they add is about 15 hours of work before you realize you need to trash them to make the machine work correctly?

I have the same problem. A Vista machine that's been running CS3 for several months now gives that useless error message for PS and with DW it just does nothing. I didn't spend a load of money on a product only to find I'm locked out for no reason and just wasted 2 hours uninstalling and reinstalling only to find the same problem.
This machine is used for little other than web design, no new products added recently, possible Microsoft Vista patches and Kaspersky AV updates. Closing Kaspersky makes no difference.

You have to reset the preference if it worked before and does not now. Lots of posts on how to do it and also instructions in knowledgebase.

If you have an error in the preferences file, you will still have it after a uninstall and reinstall.

Your serial number is on a sticker on the back of the disc box

If you downloaded, your serial number is in the email from the Adobe store

A user to user forum can't help, you need to call Adobe

My mode is set to "color." I have tried all the sampling styles, check and unchecking the aliasing box and all the limits options. Nothing!

Hard to say without seeing the picture. I suspect that cropping around the image with a selection tool and then filling that area with a color is more what you are looking to do.
