You can also make icon files from almost any image in IrfanView.
Uncomplicated images work best, of course.
http://www.irfanvie w.net/

Ctrl-R to re-size the file. Choose "Set New Size" and uncheck "Preserve
Aspect Ratio." Dpi doesn't matter. Then click S to save and choose .ico from
the drop-down list and there you go. It takes less than a minute. That's how
I made mine.

Rhetorical questions for deeper thoughts...

While we cannot guess Adobe's motivations in the increased publicity, why are we taking this threat seriously when it is no different than previous security issues with Acrobat/Reader? What has changed? Is it really news that Mac can be exploited?

This forum is filled with posts about how many of us do not care about security because we perceive safety on Mac. So why should we care about this threat when it is no different than all the others in the past?

It seems apparent that the myth about secure platforms is fading, even in this forum. Both OSX and Linux, two of the more 'secure' platforms, are clearly vulnerable.

Jim,

Due to the way and extent the information has been disseminated so far, I'm taking it seriously. But that's me.

If you or anyone else doesn't feel it is important, feel free to ignore it.

Where do you do that in Reader?

I see prefs for javascript, but nothing for Java.

Part of the reason I responded the way I did was to shine a light on the fact that javascript and Java are two different things.

Forcing the issue by the way I worded my reply #22, I'm merely hoping it will prod folks to inventory their own level of understanding, and to explore why I might have made what might seem a pedantic differentiation.

And then to come to realize that it wasn't pedantic at all, but an important distinction.

Try using Bridge instead of the Finder — then icons don't matter.

If you insist on using the Finder:
In icon view in the Finder: View Menu/View Options/ Adjust slider to 128 x 128.

Neil - thanks for the input. I was assuming I could repartition and create a dedicated scratch partition as I have done with all my PC's. The idea of an external scratch might be a solution of the partitioning can't be done. As I may have indicated - I've worked with PC's for 30 years (can you believe it!!) and this will be a first foray into the apple orchard.

Yes I need portability right now as I will be moving between two locations (home studio and remote). That's why I'd like to hear from someone using the MacBook Pro to get their experience re speed and performance.

Paul - yes indeed. I had also looked at the 24 inch Cinema display until I saw the glossy glass. I think I'll go with an NEC or Lacie instead as a second monitor.

Thanks again.

But then you have one set of heads multitasking between the OS and the app. And that slows you down. A fast external drive would be better.

I take it this is a recent purchase, and it was cheap. Be aware that with old technology, you will be limited in both the apps that will still run on it and with the degree of support you'll be able to get from any source.

But as Ramón suggests, you may have been given a bum deal on the software...

Ann,
You are wrong. iPhoto is not diabolic. It also does not nowadays spread folders all over the place (it encloses them into the iPhoto Library-package to save the users from seeing all the folders and make a mess I guess). I guess you are talking about an old version where the folders were still visible without opening the library-package. Nobody really need to dig around inside those folders.

Hey Joakim, I'm not able to replicate this at all, either. As PShock initially asked, would you explain purpose of this keyboard/mouse combination? If it's something that's frequently used, it might warrant the "Really big stupid bug in CS4!" designation.

Ramon and DYP, how is it that you guys ended up with different behaviors? My test didn't activate any menu or dialog boxes.

All that happens is that the Layer Style dialog box comes up, nice and
smoothly.

Just a dialog box that says "Could not use the move tool because no layers
are selected".

Hello,

I have never seen this before. I have made so many actions and created droplets from them, but this is a first.

I created a simple action that opens a pdf file at 72 DPI, makes the image size 1 inch wide and saves it as a jpeg to a predetermined folder, then I close the original without saving.

When I create the droplet, and drag a bunch of PDF files onto it, it keeps only the first PDF file I started to process and names it the original name of the one I used to create the initial action.

Any help is greatly appreciated...

thanks

Am trying to clear up space on my laptop and in doing so searched for a way to remove Bridge as this is one application that I don't use at all on that machine. However, Bridge doesn't appear at all in the Add/Remove programmes list (Windows XP2 Pro) which has thrown me somewhat. I then attempted to remove CS3 hoping that Bridge would appear in an options list which of course it doesn't :-( so had to back track from there as well. Has anyone got any suggestions please?

I don't think you can split Bridge from Photoshop CS3.

Get an external drive and move all non-system and non-program files to it.

You can't nor should you. If you're that desperate for space I suggest
you buy a new harddrive.

I just took a look at my CS4 installation. The Bridge executables directory takes up 144mb. Not that terrible really in this day and age.

If you happen to have either the "Goodies" or "Documentation" folders in Program Files>Adobe, you could consider backing up and deleting those. It might give you about that amount of space if you really need to free up every last megabyte.

Creativepart:
Click on start then help and support. Type in clear type in the search and hit enter. There you look for "make test easier to read using clear type". From there you can find what you need.

Windows font size can be found in Appearance Settings. Several options to choose from. Color and size is driven by what scheme you choose too.

The windows setting for fonts is set to standard. Cleartype was activated, but deactivating it didn't change anything.

All tracking/kerning options are grayed out still when any characters are selected.

OK, I found it.

It was a setting in PS Preferences. I'm not sure how it got turned on, but it did. The setting was in Preferences > Type and "Show Asian Text Options" was checked. I decided to uncheck it only because I don't use Asian text and I didn't make that setting.

But unchecking that option fixed the problem.

So, put that one down as an unexplained oddity.

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it. Even though the answer didn't come from the suggestions, it was good of you both to jump in and try to help.

File this one as solved and remember that "Asian Text Options" disables tracking and kerning options -- at least in US English versions of CS3 Photoshop.

Can you post a section of the image that illustrates the problem.

It does sound from your description that it's a simple color correction where you just need to set the white point using Curves. But it could be more complicated...

Kelli: Just use the eyedropper tool in the curves palette and set the grey area as the white point, should correct all the colours.

Hi all. I just bought a second Sata2 drive to use as my scratch disk for CS3. Someone told me in another thread I need to partition this drive so that one partion is for the scratch disk and one is for the storage ofthe pic I will be working with. This is a 750 GB 7200rpm Sata2 Samsung drive. Does anyone have an idea how much/big each partition should be? Thanks in advance!

BTW, my primary HD is the exact same SATA2 drive...

Partitioning will do nada for performance.
Partition only if you want to for whatever organizational, stability,
security reasons float your boat.

I should probably add that I use two computers. One is a crumby laptop that I use for the internet, which I am using now, and the other is the computer that I described in my first post, which is for work. My work computer is never connected to the internet unless it needs to be to install something. So, I don't have any AV or firewall to slow things down. The only programs I have installed that run in the background are the "ATI Catalyst Control Center," for my video card, and the "Emu Patch Mix DSP Services," for my sound card. They both use minimal memory.

I have two drives:

Western Digital 150 GB with 120 GB still free: This drive has all of my applications installed on it, including Windows XP SP2.

Seagate 300 GB with 120 GB still free: This drive is strictly for storage. There are no programs installed on it.

Thanks for responding!

This is far from insurmountable.

Does anyone have a Photoshop 4.0 PSD with a thumbnail they'd be willing to share with me, or perhaps know of where I might find one?

If you can provide one of these, post a link here or contact customer-service at ardfry.com

Teaser screenshots to follow.

I recently moved from CS2 to CS4 and here's another basic task I can't do. I could say lots of negative things, instead, just the basics. I have a PSD file with a background layer in one color and a text layer with text in another color. All I want to do is create a GIF which uses the background color for transparency but no matter what I try I only get the background color. This is really discouraging.

No problem here. Just a dialog box that says "Could not use the move tool because no layers are selected".

Opening a Smart Object while in full screen mode also triggers the problem. Hitting the f-key and thereby changing the screen mode sets the cursor back to normal.

Interesting. Thanks, Matthias.

Incidentally, for those of us experiencing the 1-pixel displacement of the marching ants when using Command+A or the marquee tool, switching away from the Standard View also solves the problem.

Ramón,

Agreed. Of course, even PDFs from "known" sources can be compromised. IIRC, about 10-12 years ago, Corel distributed their own boxed software with a Mac-only virus actually burned into the CDs by accident.

So, obviously, downloads from shady sources should always be avoided. Yet, that doesn't mean we should let our guard down with files sent from clients or file downloads from well-known and respected sources.

From Ramón's link:

Symantec, meanwhile, reports seeing the exploit used against only a few
government agencies and large corporations, and within those organizations,
only a few people are targeted, said Kevin Haley, a Symantec Security
Response director.

So even major corps and government agencies can harbor malicious PDF documents.

I've disabled Java in Acrobat and Reader. Updated Flash.

Disabling Java takes care of the Acrobat/Reader flaw, and the patch for Flash 10 released on 2/5/2009 takes care of the issue in that application.

From Neil's first link:

However, the vulnerability is not in the scripting engine and, therefore,
disabling JavaScript does not eliminate all risk.

Disabling Javascript just lessens your risk. It does not make you entirely safe.

The fact that Acrobat/Reader and Flash have been patched in the past for the very same issue makes me wonder why this particular alert is any more serious. Even Apple has issued security updates to address PDF and SWF in the past.

The increased publicity of this particular warning and the fact that disabling Javascript does not cure everything makes me think that the exploit is probably very simple and could be replicated on a much larger scale than anything prior.

The added risk is not in the exploitation of this vulnerability as it exists so far, it is in it potential of additional (perhaps more serious) exploits possible (and expected) with the current vulnerability.

One temporary option suggested is to open PDFs with Preview, which apparently does not suffer the same vulnerability as Reader or Acrobat do.

That is the same as it was for previous security updates to Acrobat/Reader. Previous security updates have also been released to prevent the same type of attack. The following (presented in your first link) is not new text.

"This vulnerability would cause the application to crash and could potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system"

Look at this from last year. <http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb08-13.html>

It is the same problem. The ability to take over a system (of any platform) through Acrobat/Reader has existed for years. The increased hype on this month's issue is just odd. This makes me think the exploit is much easier this time or else Adobe would not act so panicked.

If it weren't serious, Adobe would not be compromising their reputation
by being public about it.

I agree. Adobe has a lot invested in PDF technology. They can't be too happy about seeing it compromised.

Andrew,

Fast CPUs, big hard drives, separate monitor, and a lot of RAM are always best. But laptops are always a compromise for the sake of portability. Understand that the best setup for heavy use is going to be a Mac tower. But if portability if key, the configuration you're looking at should work fine. As for RAM, the larger and more complex the files, the more apps you are using simultaneously, the more, the better. You should also consider adding a separate external drive for scratch.

Other good RAM sources: Crucial and RAMjet.

The Adobe tech alerts indicate otherwise <http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa09-01.html>. Disabling javascript helps but it is not a cure.

You can also make icon files from almost any image in IrfanView.
Uncomplicated images work best, of course.
http://www.irfanview.net/

Ctrl-R to re-size the file. Choose "Set New Size" and uncheck "Preserve
Aspect Ratio." Dpi doesn't matter. Then click S to save and choose .ico from
the drop-down list and there you go. It takes less than a minute. That's how
I made mine.
