In CS3 Save for Web dialog box showed a small icon beside to the 'Quality' slider where you could choose an alpha channel and fine tuning the level of Jpeg compression. In the same dialog box there were options for text layers and vectors. I think the box was called 'Quality Image settings.
What I'm trying to do, Ramon, is teaching my students where Adobe put that options in the CS4 release...even if I'm an ACI I can't know everything...an ACI is not a clairvoyant :-)
Probably my english is getting worse, I do apologize for that.

Are you sure? I don't have CS3, but as far as I know jpg has never supported alpha channels or text layers, so why would those options appear in Save for Web? Certainly not there in previous versions.

It may be worth a continued search. Many things have been moved. While I am not at CS4 now, it was available in CS2 and CS3 so it is unlikely to have been a transient feature.

Yes, but you have to understand that Chris can only do what he can in his environment. He has people to answer to and more then one company as well. To be honest, Adobe is out of control at this point and they have lost the essence for fear of retaliation by its customers. It's a case of damn if you do and damn if you don't. The real problem is the people higher up who have NO BUSINESS making decisions on how and industry shall be steered are the ones pissing off the majority of people that are being affected by said changes.
All this comes down to the lack of market research in the industries they cripple based upon their semi tempest decisions - do to the lack of actual real world experience because they are developers and not entrenched in any specific field they affect.
I call it irresponsible plight for the sake of corporate stock holder edification.
But we all do what we can as individuals - but the real problem is tunnel vision because Adobe REALLY does not understand the markets they cater to...

I think it's all about optimizing the workflow for professionnal designers.
I would prefer the new copy to keep the same name as there is more chance I want it to be named the same way. If I really want to name it differently, then I'll do it myself. Having to go in each subfolders to remove the Copy is a nuissance. It is counter-productive and breaks the workflow.
The best option for everyone would be to add the word "Copy" only on the first level, and not the sub-levels of items.
Let's say I have a folder called "Root" which includes a subfolder called "Subfolder", which contains a couple of layers. Duplicating the "Root" folder should make a new one called "Root Copy" but it should *NOT* add the "Copy" tag to the "Subfolder" and whatever layers/folders contained in it.
The screenshot I posted previously explain the whole issue by itself and I don't see why anyone could argue with this.
I can understand it does not make sense to a photographer using Photoshop for retouching. But for a heavy user who makes use of the folders system a lot, it is self-explanatory.
Talking about folders, I'm also still dreaming about Photoshop to handle properly the 5th level of folders. Re-ordering folders on that 5th level does not work. Works fine on the 4th level, but 5th doesn't.

It just strikes me as silly. If I have a Layer named "face" and I duplicate it, it's named "face copy", which tells the story. Sometimes I'll work on the copy and leave the original alone. This way I know which is which.
Simple and useful.
But, whatever you like.

I installed two new 1TB Hard Drives this week, and reinstalled all software fresh. I was hoping this would resolve some of the ongoing problems I've been having with email and other misc. bugs. But I was overly optimistic and some of the problems seem to have followed me to my new setup, only now a little more difficult.
So if I may imposed on you all once again…
Mail Question:
Does anyone else have ongoing on again/off again problems with Mail?
It seems I get some mail and then don't get it for a while. It's intermittent. I researched this and found this advice at (I think was) the Apple Website:
I think for your issue on the one Mac, the next best thing to do is quit
Mail, and in the Finder open Home/Library/Mail and locate the file named
b MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 and delete it. It may have become corrupt.
Now relaunch Mail, and it should download all messages that currently
reside on the POP server, including any previously downloaded.
I did this and it worked to a point, although to my dismay I was overwhelmed with all past emails that are still on my server. After sorting through them all I thought I was set. But now it seems to have happened all over again. There must be some sort of corruption going on with Apple Mail and the new install.

Neil, I assume you mean my settings at iPower. I'll check them, but I don't think it's related since I now can get email on my previous setup when I boot from the old drive. Also I get email on my laptop.

Update: Email now has quit coming through on my laptop. It's always this way. On again, off again.
This is just one of the reasons my husband got disgusted with the MacBook Pro and gave it to me. He doesn't have these problems on his PC.

That is very true. The photos I were given weren't that great. They were RAW files, so that is nice, but they shot it on a green screen that wasn't evenly lit, several of the models had come green hues in their clothing, & one of the models was even wearing a reflective jacket & shoes. So, that being said, it's pen tool all the way. I've messed around with Mask Pro before. I thought it was decent. Perhaps I should try it again. But I guess when you're relying on others to photograph the models, you're at the mercy of their training!

Is defringing a way of contracting the selection or does it have to do with tweaking some halo color remnants? If it's contracting the selection, I either use the feature under modify, or the Minimum feature in filters to reduce my mask by a pixel or two.

| Just playing. I left it pretty big so you can read the cute poem I found online. I've always been fascinated by flamingos. Probably another thing that drew me to Florida. I think it would make a better state bird than the mockingbird. I do like mockingbirds but not what they copiously leave behind. We had one that nest either in the gutter or somewhere very near our bedroom corner of the deck. She is forever flying into and around the glass doors admiring herself. Loves to sit on one of the loungers and deposit purple glue which must be the main ingredient of epoxy! Don't say it. The CRA was designed in the early 1970s to get rid of a Jim Crow
situation in American home finance operations. Banks and S&Ls
(especially but not totally limited to the racist South) were refusing
to give out mortgages to people that qualified otherwise in terms of
credit ratings, savings etc. because they lived in certain areas,
usually majority black or Hispanic. White folks with the same credit
ratings etc. got mortgages because they lived outside the "redlined"
areas -- the finance offices had maps on the office walls with the
excluded areas drawn in red ink. The CRA said that mortgages had to be
determined on the applicant's ratings, not on where they lived and
colour was absolutely not to be used to determine whether to accept or
reject the application.
Many mortgages currently defaulting were issued to people with no jobs
and no income, so-called NINJA loans. The CRA had nothing to do with
that, it was just greed from the loan companies and their agents who got
commissions for every sale whether the purchaser could keep up the
payments or not. It wasn't the CRA that forced the lenders to drop their
lending standards into the toilet.

The banks collapsed because they leveraged mixtures of good (30-year
fixed-interest) and bad (NINJA) mortgages as financial instruments (the
infamous CDOs) and sold them to each other at ratios of thirty or forty
to one. There are maybe 150-200 billion dollars worth of defaulting
mortgages out there, although job losses caused by the second Bush
recession could drive that higher as formerly safe mortgages fall into
default as steady wage earners lose their paychecks. The banks have lost
trillions of dollars as the book values of the CDOs they hold plummeted
when they were examined closely.

several days of dry weather, rain comes and it quickly cools down
again. Even the hotter days usually have a cool breeze blowing

Keep in mind that the MAJOR emitter of CO2, Mother Nature, does it
by the trees you talk about decaying, which is a normal process.

greenhouse gas, methane, which is 29X as dangerous as CO2.

LAST time mean temperatures DROPPED was only 30 years ago. What if
we had tried to lower temperatures then? By now we'd be in another
Little Ice Age similar to the one that caused widespread crop
failures and massive starvation in Europe during the Middle Ages.

That's part of the balanced cycle. Release from fossil fuels isn't
naturally balanced by anything, it's in addition to the natural cycle.

"Far more dangerous" in what way? Per unit mass, yes, but the mass of
methane in the atmosphere is very small and it degrades quickly, so it

Overstating the case. If we had tried to lower temperatures then
nothing much would have happened as we wouldn't in the time that has
elapsed reduce CO2 levels enough to make a damned bit of difference.

I have the manual in PDF format on my hard drive. I want to have it in
book form so I can study it and practice the various settings.
I thought of printing it but 184 pages is a LOT of ink and paper, and
very tricky to print two on a page, both sides of the paper. I wasted
a lot of paper trying. Okay, we're not all geniuses...
I would rather buy a book on the A470 but apparently there are none
available, anywhere. Can some one lead me to a vendor that DEFINITELY
has such an animal? I bought one for every camera I ever owned but
can't find a single one for the elusive A470.

Copy the .pdf to a jump drive or cd and take it to Kinkos or other print
shops. They can print it out and bind it for you for probably no more than
you would spend buying a manual.

to your computer. At home, I find it easer to read the PDF files
than the actual manuals, and the ability to search them is very
useful.

My solution was to get Sony's Reader. It can hold many thousands
of eBooks, DOC and PDF files, and I've got all of may camera manuals
on one. The latest version (PRS-700) has many nice features, such
as searching, notes, annotations, text copy & paste, and a touch
sensitive screen. But because the older PRS-505 doesn't have the
touch sensitive screen, its display is a bit crisper. Their
rechargeable batteries have extremely long life because virtually
all of the battery power is to change the page being displayed.
Battery life is measured in "page turns", which are many thousands
per charge. Right now it's holding 57 PDF files, including Canon,
Fuji, Nikon and Olympus camera, lens and speedlight manuals, and a
few PDA and cell phone manuals.

The CBO - Congressional Budget Office - says that the compromise
stimulus package will actually cause a DECLINE in GDP, not a rise.
It also says that the BULK of the near-term rise before the decline
starts isn't until 2011 by which time the economy will recover on

The earliest viable DSLRs were the Kodak DCS series (100, 200, 420,
460, C1), they were up to 6mp (460, C1) and Kodak had a RAW processing
program, Photo Desk. The other alternative was to process to TIF in
camera which took a while, but designers like TIF files. They saved to
250mb PCMCI cards which cost a couple of grand apiece. The cameras
were above $20K each, but a lot of catalog photographers used them.

I disagree. This would be true only if RAW files had no processing
whatsoever, were just a matrix of original electron data in an array.
But most camera RAW files DO have some sort of processing. Many have
already done the color allocation, some have some compression. What is
done to the data depends on the camera and the model. If this were not
so, you would not need the RAW conversion software, you could dump it to
the screen with a very simple universal program.

Hi. I'm going to buy my first digital. I was thinking of the
Panasonic DMC-TZ5K Lumix Digital Still Camera (Black) - 9.1 MP 10x
optical zoom
Of course I want a DSLR, but the funds ain't there. I used 35mm film
before; an old (1970's) Ricoh XR1S(all manual).
What are your thoughts on this camera?
One thing that I'm a bit perturbed about are that these digitals have
so many functions and features. Why perturbed? I'd rather spend
money on image quality than on functions I don't need.
What cameras have the best image quality in that price range($319.00
in Canada).
