Only about the drive. You can pretty much install it anywhere you want.
But no matter where you install you will still need room on the c drive
for installation files.

But yeah, get the drive first.

For Adam J

Core 2 duo 2.4 GHz, 6 GB RAM, Vista 64, ASUS EN9600GT 512MB with latest driver as of last week
Primary monitor Eizo 1600 x 1200
Secondary monitor Eizo 1024 x 1280 (rotated to portrait)
Also running Ultramon for 2nd monitor taskbar management, but disabling Ultramon doesn't seem to make any difference.
Trend Micro Internet Security (TMIS).
Having Firefox 3 and Outlook on or off makes no difference to PS CS4 performance.
PS CS3 performs fine with Ultramon, TMIS, Outlook and Firefox 3 running.
No tablet installed at the moment, but I have one ready to install.

With PS CS4 32 (for example) opened and not being used, the Task Manager Process list shows the photoshop.exe CPU value changing every second or so (variable period) between 0 and 1, and sometimes 2.

I'm concentrating on PS CS4 32-bit first so I can get it working optimally with all my plugins (hopefully). No plugins installed yet except Topaz Adjust, which has been updated for PS CS4.
No discernible lag with text.
Slight delay in redrawing, only slightly slower than PS CS3 (with Use for Image Display off - otherwise no image display - oldGPU reg key loaded - made a useful difference - and PS cache set to more than 1 - made a big difference).
Brush cursor very laggy before I start drawing, then slightly laggy while drawing, unless brush is very small (no lag either way with CS3), then good while moving cursor without drawing. Switch to another app like FireFox and switch back, and the brush cursor is very laggy again without drawing.

Cheers, John

Noticed something interesting... Had the same problem with brush lag, clone tool lag, whatnot. Tried everything.
Had a thought - updated DirectX, there is a new Nov 2008 update. All lagging is gone. Might be a coincedence but worth trying.
XP SP3.

Sorry for the broken record, but I can't resist once again advocating Filter Factory (FF) for tasks such as this.

To divide a circle into 8 equal pie sections, select the circle and put it on a separate layer via CTRL-J. With that layer highlighted invoke FF and enter the following in the R G and B boxes:

R: d%128==0?0:255

G: 255

B: 255

FF splits the circle into 1024 angles. d is the angle

The R code says "If the angle divided by 128 leaves zero remainder, set R =0, else set R=255.

Thus, where d is a multiple of 128, the color is cyan (blue and green). Elsewhere it is white.

What could be cleaner?

Despite Filter Factory's agility (or the even more versatile Filter Foundry <http://www.telegraphics.com.au/svn/filterfoundry/trunk/dist/README.html>) I'd still want to do it with vector masks.

But that's just me, and my famous pickiness.

Phos

Correct me if I'm not following you. I think you are referring to what you do with the eight pie sections after they have been formed, and using them as masks is one way to go. How you delineate them is one thing, and how you make masks of them and deploy the masks is another. Using FF to form the pie sections to begin with and then selecting each piece of pie, in turn, as a mask seems as good a way to go as any.

I'm saying I'd create the pie wedges as vector objects, and keep and use them as vectors so they'd re-render as cleanly as possible if I decided I wanted to move, rotate or resize them. Once you've created a pixel-based selection or mask, you're kind of limited in what you can do with them and still maintain original quality.

I've learned the hard way too many times about trying to tweak pixel-based objects and not having them meet the quality standards I enjoy, so I do what I can to use vectors wherever possible.

David Nicol,

I agree with you, the rotate canvas tool is awesome... as are all of the new features. I'm not saying the features are a disaster, but the quality of programming and performance of photoshop CS4... that is the disaster. With GPU, this program should be lighting quick... Without GPU it should be lighting quick. :) Its neither... However CS3 is lightning quick without GPU! So CS4 introduced GPU support but the performance is worse than the old display code they were using in CS3!!! Whats the point ?

And its not the GPU, because in software display mode in CS4... its almost as slow as with GPU... and its still far slower than CS3 was.

Do i think they can fix this? Sure... When? I dont know. But why was it released this way? And what is the real cause for this severe problem?

I'm glad there are trial versions.

Please dont tell me its because us 30inch guys run at 2560x1600 because that would be an entire industry of graphic artists.

The system i tested on...

Intel QX6700 (quadcore extreme)
Intel D975XBX2 motherboard
Nvidia 8800GTX
8GB Ram
Latest Nvidia drivers (I also tried running the newest beta drivers)
HP 30inch monitor - Native resolution 2560x1600
Wacom Intous 3
Local Raid 0 (sata)
Vista 64bit.

Ok, here's another data point I need: are people who are experiencing the lag using a tablet?

If so, do you have the latest drivers?

Also, do the performance problems continue if you use a mouse instead of a tablet to drive the PS UI?

This information would be very helpful for those of us investigating this problem.

Thanks again,
-Adam

I'm using a Wacom Intuos 2 with the latest driver. But I get identical performance problems whether I use the mouse or the tablet. On my second computer, I use an Intuos 3. Same thing, identical whether using mouse or tablet. Both systems are Win XP SP3. One is single monitor 1920x1200, the other is dual monitor 1600x1200.

I'm on XP. Sorry for not mentioning initially.

And no, as far as I can see my PS version is 10.0

I didn't know it is normal that ACR launches when editing a smart object. This would mean that the .jpg file is still stored inside the smart object, whereas I had thought that once the .jpg file had been opened in PS, it's a raster layer like any other and stored as such inside the smart object (and not in the original file format).

I just updated to ACR 4.6 and the problem persists. Maybe it isn't related to ACR at all, it was just my guts feeling.

Two suggestions:
First one is easy.... second one not so easy.

FIRST SUGGESTION:
Go into Control Panel>Printers
Set another printer as default (Preferably Microsoft XPS Document Writer or Adobe PDF.)
See if PS works now.

SECOND SUGGESTION

1) Use Programs and Features to delete all Adobe applications. If it has Adobe in it's name, it needs to be removed.

2) Delete the following Adobe folders:
C:\Program Files\Adobe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe
When you delete these not everything will come off (mostly things from Acrobat). When you run into a file that will not delete, just delete everything else instead.

4) Goto c:\ProgramData (This is a hidden folder) and delete the FlexNet folder.

3) Hit (Windows Key + R) to get your Run Command.
Type in RegEdit and press OK.
Expand HKEY_Local_Machine.
Expand Software.
Delete the folder that is plainly called "Adobe".

4) Run the clean script at level 4. When it says level 1 or 2, just type 4. When it is finished run it again at level 4 just to be sure.

5) Reinstall.

I purchased a new Dell XPS 630 with XP Pro SP3. I installed Premiere Pro CS3 (all parts), which works fine. I then tried to install my old PS7 and I can't get it to load. I tried the disc in another machine with XP and it loaded right away. Any ideas why it won't load on my new machine? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am using red eye tool. Drag box over pupil and release mouse but nothing happens.

Only when I move the picture or zoom it forcing a redraw does the effect suddenly pop in. This occurs with other tools like clone stamp as well.

Photoshop CS4 file saving problem: When no file name is specified, Photoshop saves file to the root directory of the drive instead of the current folder. It auto names the image with the name of the folder that was active. Can this be fixed?

BTW: I was using "save for web"--not sure if it that matters.

Last night my portable hard drive, where I had Photoshop installed, died. So I tried to re-install it on my proper hard drive. It says it conflicts with Photoshop. I tried to uninstall it but the uninstaller couldn't find the files (because they're on the dead hard drive). So I got an uninstaller program and used that. Now Photoshop doesn't register as being installed by Windows, but somehow the Photoshop installer still finds it. I just went through the registry editor and deleted every photoshop thing I could by hand, but it still thinks it's installed. I just got my Tablet back from being fixed and so having my pc break on me feels very frustrating. Any way around this?

Other check way could be use the 'Windows Task Manager' and check the process of Photoshop. For 32bit PS, it is Photoshop.exe *32. Or you could find the system information from Photoshop menu->Help->System Info. You could find X64 at the end of the Adobe Photoshop Version.

In some Camera raw tutorials I've seen color gradations in the tint sliders (which makes selecting exactly what color hue you're shooting for easier). Is this a feature only in CS3 and above (just like the histogram display in the curves palette)?

I am currently using CS2

Up to about 2 weeks ago when I fire up PS the opening splash window only took about 15 - 20 seconds to cycle through and PS opens up. Since then it takes a very long time to open. The "Reading Preferences" takes nearly a minute or so then all the other race through and PS opens. Why would the "Reading Preferences" take no time at all one day then the next take over a minute? I haven't changed anything to my knowledge in the Preferences tabs to cause this.

Any ideas?

Today, I opened a file to print and sharpened it with Smart Sharpen. Now, I have always been unhappy with the speed, it was Veery slow. Sometimes with my stitched files, it could take many minutes. Well, today, I'm down to seconds! I mean the largest file I found took about 16 seconds, where the same file earlier took 200 to 300 seconds! I have absolutely no idea why!

Some time back, it seemed to me that the Smart Sharpen suddenly was taking longer than it used to, and I chalked it up to the increased file size. I would wait and wait even for the preview to finish. If I dragged the preview box around, it would leave a transparent background which would slowly fill in.

It seems like it's not writing to scratch. Opening PS, I see about 75 MB in scratch. Opening a file in PS, it jumps to 570 MB, but now, it does not increase in size after sharpening. That's not the behavior I've seen before. After Smart Sharp on similar sized files, I would see scratch size go up to2 or three Gigs, sometimes as large as 6G. Now, no change at all!
