This is not workable if you are trying to sell software, we offered

ask, they simply want the Windows version.

Could be.

As Star Office is free, why spend the money.

I know some bits of M$ Office don't work in Star Office, but they're the
stuff nobody but a few ever use.

I'm afraid I wouldn't know.

I gave up selling software in about 1982.

Having used Xandros for about a year now and Ubuntu for the last few
weeks I'm finding it a lot less painful than I imagined.

The modern desktops are remarkably easy to use.

The mistakes it is making are not aiding it in the sale of products. Vista
has done very poorly.

Furthermore, today's Microsoft is exclusively profit-oriented. That was not
the case when Bill was in charge, as he had other priorities besides making
money. His successor, Steve Ballmer, is purely a businessman, and judging by
mistakes like Vista, perhaps not a very good one.

But they aren't producing one.

> Very few home users buy M$ Office

Businesses buy Office in droves. Office and operating systems are the two
cash cows of Microsoft.

You are contradicting yourself. First you say that Microsoft can force people

but to continue supplying and supporting an old operating system. Which is
it?

Because more people know how to use Microsoft Office, and they know that most
other people are using Microsoft Office as well.

Something to keep in mind when telling others they are out of touch.

What criteria are used to validate the name?

Explain the verification stuff.

A program creates a file in C:\Data\stuff.dat. Is this file correctly named
and in the appropriate folder or not?

I'm surprised by how many are running Windows.

UNIX is usually a better choice for servers, but the inferior Linux has gotten
a lot more hype, so people choose it more often (often because they recognize
the name, whereas they've never heard of UNIX). The BSDs are better than
Linux for servers, though.

They think California is a Communist dictatorship, secretly run by

we?

For the most it works well, but sometimes the California Democracy can
lead to big time damage.
Look at what happened 6 years ago when the then Governor Gray Davis was
constitutionally obliged to do away with the Vehicle License Fee
rebates because of a California budget deficit. That opened the window
for the Central Valley/Orange County/San Diego County right wing-nuts
to recall Davis and seat Der Guvernator.

Mr. Olympia immediately reinstated the VLF rebates which have now been
in place for the last 6 years. The cost approximately $6B per year.
Arhnhuld's plan was to borrow $10B for 18 months to fill the revenue
gap. Now we have lost approximately $30B in revenue plus servicing the
$10B bond creating a hole of about $40B.
California was well positioned to survive the current financial crisis
even with lowered estate values and sales/income tax revenues. The hole
created just couldn't be filled and none of the Sacramento politicos,
Arhnhuld included, had the balls to contemplate pissing on that third
rail.

Time has proven Gray Davis to have been correct. The right wing-nuts
just called him a tax and spend Democrat, and were wrong.

The same voters who complained they couldn't afford an extra $200-$300
a year for a SUV or BMW license fee, are now complaining over service
cuts, teacher lay-offs, increased UC & Cal State fees, and the
potential early release of 10,000 felons.

Now I'm getting more confused. I thought it was said that undercover
task force members don't make arrests. I don't know if this was an
undercover operation or a simple arrest. That didn't come up.

It's quite possible that I don't know the difference between
"undercover", "task force", "drug enforcement units", any other jargon
terms. Robby works drug cases. That's all I know for sure. Robby
did say that he didn't want his photograph circulated in the druggie
community, so that sounds like he works undercover. Police
terminology and procedures are not areas of familiarity to me.

I agree that he was wrong in that his actions violated the procedures
the police are supposed to follow. I am not greatly disturbed over
this, though.

In the world of film, colour processing definitely was more exacting than
BW. And, within the realm of colour, processing slides was even tougher
than negs. But, a lot depends on the desired result.

For instance, in my opinion, it's easier to capture the essence of a festive
scene with colour than it is with BW, especially in those scenes where
colourful costumes are present. BW can render the ocasion more starkly than
might be desired.

Take Care,
Dudley

True, but with different lights it's much easier in B/W, because you got no
worries about white balance.

Yep, mixed lighting is much easier in BW. Also, when shooting portraits,
kids, etc, some skin conditions will stick out like a sore thumb (pun
intended) when shooting with colour, whereas BW can mask the condition
fairly effectively. Even poorly applied makeup often is less noticeable
with BW shots.

Going back to the film world, sandwich prints tended to be easier with BW as
well, since putting two colour negs on top of each other often tended to
have undesireable results due to unforseen additive or subtractive
filtration effects.

Take Care,
Dudley

This part is incorrect. Higher ISOs will have more noise, other things
being equal.

Part of what Rich says is true although nothing to do with his (as
usual) idiotic presentation.

Film has so much dynamic range and no more. But high end scanners scan
beyond that and store beyond that. The part that is noise or simply out
of dynamic range is just filler bits in the resulting uncompressed file.

Many scanners are 16 bit/colour yet there is arguably no more than 13 -
14 bits of dynamic range in the film. So 2 - 3 (up to 18%) bits of the
scan data is indeed garbage/filler. Because of bit, byte, word ordering
and the setting of those garbage bits by the scan s/w they might not be
compressed out if they are not constant.

Where the film itself does not resolve to the ability of the scanner is
further waste as well. Where a 4000 - 6000 dpi scan of high res film
does yield mainly useful information, that is not so of most ISO 100 and
higher films.

Rich, as usual, has baited people with a dumb posting. Just state the
facts and move on.

[Photoshop-Haven] Re: PS letter styles opposed to PSP

Hi Wendy -- It might be that the styles you are applying need to be scaled to your image resolution. On your text layer, right-click on either the "fx" icon or on "Effects" in the expanded layer and choose "Scale effects" from the pop-up menu. That will give you a slider that you can play with.

Ah-ha! You've solved one problem, Monte. The horizontal scale in the Character pallet was set to 35% instead of 100%. Now the letters are in correct proportion.
There still remains the problem of the details looking like blobs and letters looking messy. For example, the font used (Kingthings Christmas) has snowflake patterns on the outside of the letters. These are rendered as blobs instead of sharp patterns.
Any thoughts there?

Do you have Illustrator? If so, bring it in to there, set it up as multiple page tiles and save as PDF with "Create Multi-page PDF from Page Tiles" checked.

It s working ! thanks!
it s just a little bit quite a long process ;) ...
I mean compare to the CS3 .... > File
Automate
PDF presentation

I am still dreaming of this quick way. ;)

thanks again for taking the time of giving me those advises!

actually i have a question concerning the Illustrator solution.

is there a way to copy and paste the setup of a page.
to avoid the precise drawing process.

or to enter the value of the X and Y size numerically ?

thanks!

Don t worry about my last question,
I figured a way to do it with the rulers and snapping tool.

it s a interesting new approach to my pdf presentation work ;)

thanks!

so Bridge CS4 can make multi page PDF or not? or only if you have Acrobat?

PS used to have no problem with understanding multi page with PDF
why does CS4 go backwards and ruin a perfectly usable feature that worked
easily and conveniently in CS3?
one more reason not to upgrade!!
much of my day is spent making contact sheets into multipage PDF's, I do not
need or use Illustrator or ID and I will not be happy to have to make new
work flows for everything that used to work in CS3 and now doesn't in 4

I have PS CS2 installed and every time I open my Photoshop I get the message that Ordinal 95 could not be located in the Cooltype.dll.

The program runs fine but it's a pain clicking through this error.

Is there any way I can fix this?

The Ordinal 95 font could be corrupt.

Cooltype.dll might be old. You can do a search on your computer and find out where the dll. is located and write the version down. Then do a search on your CS2 disk for the dll, copy and paste it to the hard drive location if need be.

Yesterday I saw an upgrade on a Website for Adobe CS4. It was an upgrade from Elements 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 to CS4. Not Photoshop, but Elements. I can't believe this is legitimate. I'm going to try and find the Website again and see if there is a telephone number to ring. Seems too good to be true to me. Better still, I'll look on this Adobe Site and see if such an upgrade exists.

That is true. However it is only a $100 discount off the normal price. It is a route for the Elements user to get to the full program that considers that they probably paid $100 or more for Elements.

Sometimes there are some deals to be had. I upgraded from Elements to CS 2
for $299.00. It was offered by Adobe to Canon/Epson/Microtec scanner
customers. Keep your eyes open.

Thanks, Joe

2 kilobytes???

How much RAM do you have?

2KB, that's really pushing the limits.

Whoops. Pardon. I just realised what I did wrong. 64-bit Photoshop uses a different plug-ins folder.

Last night, after I posted this, I made my own simplified version of the same panel and it works like a charm.

Thank you for the idea!

On some systems I can set the defualt printer to another printer and when I print I then select the printer I want to print too, wiht no issues but if the printer in question is the default printer then CS4 just crashes. The Printer is a Ricoh 3260C. The printer is a network printer connected to a print server. Users have Admin rights on the local PC. If anybody has any ideas on this problem I could use some help. I have removed and reinstalled driver a few times with no luck. Even tried going back to old driver as well still no luck. All other adobe products seem to work fine.

Thanks
Adam Raff

This is an IT question, not a Photoshop question.
There are too many variables here without enough information for even a
knowledgeable IT person to answer.
I can only presume you are administering your own small business p2p
network.
If you are administering your own small business network it may help to hire
an independent IT person to walk you through the basics. Configuring a
network print server is not always straight forward. It sounds like your
problem has to do with how the print server is configured rather than
drivers or the settings on individual computers.
It may be easier for you to attach the printer to a computer and share it
that way rather than a network port in order to have more stable connections
to the device.

Well, make some other printer the default

this may be accomplished by using an Adobe Generic Printer Driver

Hi Stacey,

Just the latest PS update. Although I'm getting the same behaviour as before now.

Curious - are you using a monitor that can rotate orientation with an ATI video card, by any chance?
