Hi
Well this month is about gone already. The whole month has flown by but yet winter seems never ending. Cold but sunny here today and it is windy so I do not feel like going outside at all and naturally the dog wants to go out more than usual lol.
Have looked at the mail or at least most of it on here and as always love it and tried to reply to those that I could.
Did this one up just playing around with no idea what I wanted to do lol and thanks for looking Sandy

If Adobe told me it IS legit,

I guess.

You're not legal anyway if you bought a 7.0 to CS3 upgrade. You don't
have a legal copy of Photoshop 7.0.

XD true. technically, you still need that transfer of license form from your friend.

After replacing my Hard drive on a Dell PC as a last resort, reinstalling PSCS4 extended (with a prior purchase of additional RAM and the new Nvieda video card - Quadro CX) - things started to work normally again. So one by one I reinstalled various additonal programs and plug in's. ALL stopped working again after installion of just one Nik plugs in- Sharpener Pro 3. After a complete de installation of PSCS4 and then the entire suite - twice - it was still not running correctly. My IT friend then checked my registry, etc, and NIK not completely gone from the system. After he deleting all these hidden files, and a forth re installion, I am finally fully functional!! It has been a battle since November! But NIK plug in definely the blame. It was very sticky. Cheers at last. Judith

It's regular photoshop 6. If you've got a layer selected and go to Layer>Adjust>Levels, that's what i'm trying to alter.

Let's say I have two layers. If I'm using the line tool on one layer, and then go to ajust the Upper Output Level of the second layer to '0' it makes that layer turn all black.

However, if instead of using the line tool I use the polygon lasso tool to draw some items, trying to change the level of the other layer does not work in the same manner as above.

Are you selecting any pixels with the Polygon Lasso?

the lasso tools aren't drawing tools. they're selection tools. use the line tool, pen tool, brush or some other drawing tool.

Well, I need to draw a polygon. Basically I'm trying to do some light sabre effects, and in some frames it's fanning so a simple line won't work well.

I can't enable the GPU aceleration in Photoshop CS4 64bits.
This problem is happening since I installed my new GTX295, but I think this should be compatible with PS CS4
(I'm running the newest Forceware 182.22)

Thanks

"a gradient will only cause grief" but not if you know what you are doing. It is not for the novice.

I agree to a point, Bart, but John is absolutely right when he cautions about logos being printed with all sorts of processes. Some companies have an outline form of their logo for black and white (copier and printer) reproduction, but most make do with only one logo that can be reproduced faithfully using virtually any method (Coke).

As a rule, gradients are avoided, but not always. The UPS color logo is a good example of a gradient, or shaded blend, being used successfully. However, on the UPS forms, they use an outline version.

I have no idea what the OP is planning to do with the company's logo. Adding a gradient isn't necessarily always wrong, but it has to be carefully considered. I also wonder if this alteration of the logo is a permanent change, since it's normally considered bad form to tweak a logo if you don't intend to use the new look on everything.

for no explicable reason PS3 has stopped responding to a variety of commands and particularly to 'print'. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling

I am having the same problem that someone else on here had. I did not see an answer to the issue. Ok so I have Photoshop CS4, and for some crazy reason when I add a Layer mask to a layer, and then try to paint with black to "erase" a portion of the image, it DOES erase, BUT not fully! It is as if the transparency is set to like 95%, and I can still see a very light semi transparent ghosted portion of the image. It's as if it is not fully hiding the pixels. I have checked and I definitely have the opacity of the brush set to 100% and I am using black and not a shade of grey. Any ideas??

CS3 still does this perfectly.

I am running XP pro sp3 32bit. 3gig ram. Intel Pentium 4

Yes, you can create an action using Inset Menu Item and select your script or you could create a shortcut Edit - Keyboard Shortcuts or you could even amend your script so they show in the Filter Menu.
If you are using CS4 you could use configurator and create a custom panel.

I have a black silhouette, and I want to lay a large headline over it so that the type is black when it's over the white background and changes to white as it moves over the black silhouette. The edges of the silhouette cut through the middle of a couple of the letters, so I can't do this letter-by-letter. I think there must be a simple way to do this that begins with rasterizing the text (which is the same as "create outlines" in Illustrator, right?), but I'm a new PS user and am 1) frustrated and 2) clueless. Thank you.

Type the text in grey (R,G,B,=127,127,127) and then change the blend mode to something else than "normal" (experiment).

I wasn't going to guess what you'd want to do as the next step. Maybe you had 10 images with the same lid to crop before you would move on to the printing so need the same dimensions remaining for several iterations.

If you find yourself using the same reference object(s) over and over and so need the same crop dimensions, then create yourself a preset:

After you type in the dimensions (like 4 in x 1 mm) then click the down-arrow by the crop-tool in the options bar (not the tool bar further below) and choose the little new-page icon on the right of the dropdown of presets and you can save the current numbers as a new preset for use from the drop down any time. You can even save a blanked-out crop tool option set as a preset.

However, instead of blanking out the dimensions, just use the Selection tool marquee (the dotted-line toolbar icon) followed by Image / Crop to remove excess image before printing.

Bought CS4 and can't use it.

I'm running Vista Buisiness.
My laptop won't up-date to SP1.(error #80246007)
Tried several times.
I have plenty of hard-drive space.
Went thru Troubleshooting and everything is in order.
I bought this laptop used and got no restore disk.

I know this isn't a MS Forum but I thought somebody might have had the same problem. Or maybe direct me to.....

Thanks,
Riley

[fnftwo] Lahneck am Rhein castle / New

Hello Everyone,
Just something simple today.
For a castle challenge I chose a very old painting of the Lahneck am Rhein castle
in a part of Germany that I really love.
Castle is close to Koblenz where I did a lot of my shopping when I lived there.
Built in 1244, it has a long and interesting history.

Lahneck near Lahnstein is a castle from the 13th century on the banks of the Rhein, near Koblenz, and well-known by the death of Idilea Dubb in June 1851. On her holidays, the 17 year old girl mounted the high tower of castle Lahneck, when suddenly the wooden stairs collapsed behind her. Nobody heard her crying and calling on the point of the tower, because it was surrounded with an insurmountable wall 3 meters high.

The last sentences in her diary: All I know is that there is no hope for me. My death is certain. ... Father in heaven, have mercy on my soul (drawn down with two hearts). She was only found after years in 1860,

her diary  hidden in the walls some weeks later.

Today the castle is still maintained by it's present owners complete with furniture, art, etc

and a fascinating place to visit.

Hugs from Roni

nope. see below for why.

camera raw is the name of adobe's raw converter. the fact that you
thought i meant /shooting/ raw very clearly indicates that you don't
use it, so i was *exactly* correct in my claim (even more so than i
thought).

you previously said that sharpening should be the *last* step (your
emphasis). now you claim you do multi-stage sharpening? if you do,
then you are not only contradicting yourself, but you are agreeing with
those whom you have been calling ignorant.

i would describe it as you are convinced that your way is the only
correct way and that anything that deviates from that is useless and
wanting it can only be due to ignorance.

there *are* other workflows, and like everything, they have their
advantages and disadvantages. they are not always better in all cases.
the nice thing about having choices is that you can pick what works
best for any particular situation. why is that bad?

so far, the only evidence i've seen from you about *why* it's useless
is because you say so and that anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant.
that's not exactly a convincing reason.

i never said you didn't use ufraw. what were you saying about
fabricating?

what i said was you don't use camera raw (from adobe, in case there's
any confusion this time) and not familiar with an alternate workflow,
one which sharpens when converting from raw.

*you* think it's useless. others don't. having choices is a good
thing since each image is unique. it's not useless.

If you want to avoid confusion between common nouns such as "camera"
or "raw" and proper nouns such as "Camera Raw" then you might want to
consider following the standard English language convention of
capitalizing the proper nouns.

Story I
A few years ago at a trade show I saw some fellow in his 50's with a
high end Canon and flash attempting to photograph his company's large
booth. He looked puzzled, confused, frustrated and borderline angry. I
could have stopped and suggested he shoot available light with a tripod,
but I doubted that he had a tripod. From his shooting posture and his
puzzled look at the controls, he was looking for the camera to fix the
problem. I walked on by...

Story II
Last summer at the Lincoln Memorial a young fellow had a high end Canon
and a wide angle zoom. He was doing a back sunlit shot of someone with
fill flash. As I walked by he appeared puzzled at what was shown in the
monitor. Without seeing his monitor I knew immediately what the problem
was, I bent down, pointed at the petal shade and said: "Remove this."
He immediately caught on and said, "Oh! of course! Thanks!"

The difference between these novices was one who really expected the
camera to do the work without thought and the other who had the correct
approach but was making one little mistake... and one he instantly
understood once pointed out.

It's not about how novice someone is, it's about their attitude and
willingness to learn despite mistakes that come up. And as usual this
has nothing to do with the equipment.

My SIL has a D300, and all the lenses, bells, and whistles. He also has a
lot of money. He saw my Sony DSCH1, and had to have something better, and
that's what he came up with. I am in the market for a new camera, so I
asked him how he liked the D300. Fine he sez. I asked him if it had the
18-55 mm lens, and if so how he liked it. He said he didn't know what
lenses he had, but said he had several. He looked and looked but could not
identify the lens looking at it. I just wanted to see if he knew enough to
find it. Then I asked him how it worked in the different modes, and he said
he only used it on AUTO. But he does take some darn nice pictures of the
grandkids. But then, how could ANYONE take any bad pictures of my
grandkids? I bet he even reads the manual one of these days.

Uh ... this is a full-frame camera with very ordinary sized (5.9 micron) pixels.
It's not a Canon 50D with teensy pixels.

As such, the D3x is not in need of the super-best lenses to get
pixel-peeper approval. It just needs ordinary ... not bargain basement ...
lenses. Same for all the Canon full-frame cameras.

Now a full-frame with 50D-sized pixels ... now there we're talking
the very best primes at their optimal apertures. Small pixels and
using the corner of the lens coverage will be a real test. But that has
not happened yet.

I think that music companies are sometimes too greedy. I have bought a few
albums after hearing a song I liked used as a background track on a amateur
youtube video. In fact, just this week I came across a 5D II video with a
song I liked (http://www.vimeo.com/2675248) and is a song I wouldn't have
otherwise bought. With the likes of Play and Amazon selling individual
tracks now, I think a lot of people will also do this.

As for the OP, sounds like a wind-up to me.

How did we get here from there? What has software got to do with

Right, the topic is the liberation of a piece of software not
the liberation of Palestine. Let's try to stay on track.

You can buy cheap film cameras at most any dive shop. The last one I
purchased was under $40 and I think I've seen single use cameras for about
half that price. If you want to experiment that is the way to do it at the
lowest cost. Film is a good way to start because it shows you how hard it
is to get good quality shots.

The next cheapest way to go is to rent a camera at your destination or from
a local dive shop. This option will enable you to experiment at low cost
unless you flood the camera or otherwise destroy it in the process. Then
you will probably be liable for the damage.

Trouble with that is that (a) single ziplocs are prone to leakage--you
should at least double, and (b) ziplocs don't give you a flat window
in front of the lens.

Why are you doing this kind of Usenet/newsgroup damage control?

Aren't these clowns of the brown-nosed status quo capable of defending
their own actions?

Is our John O'Flaherty simply not familiar with optics, image sensors
and the kinds of fully processed end results?

And, don't birds of a feather usually flock together?

Various software will just tag the file as rotated (often the camera
tags it this way too) but not all that software speaks well with other
software & operating systems. There isn't a fixed solution but
understanding the issue will let you decide how to deal with it. If you
describe which OS/software you are using we can offer specifics.

Those cards are cheap because they're slow and old models.
Look at the fast ones of Sandisk or Sony and you pay between $100 and $200.-

The imagetank needs no starting up time and you don't need to start an
application, copy the files, etc.
It costs much less than $100.-
But a small notebook might come in handy to see some pictures on location.

Hi all

I have had a look at the Canon G10, as a second and travel camera, but
I could not see any battery to hold the memory, like I have in my S3
IS. Does one have to send this camera to a dealer to replace this
battery? Would be a big step backwards in usability and user
friendlyness.
Perhaps I overlooked it, and it is hiding someplace?

Thanks to those that can shed some light on this for me.

Cheers,

Frank

Are you just talking about the camera battery. If so, it is on the
bottom of the camera, there is a slot that you push to one side and the
battery is there with the card.

No, Sheila,

I am talking about the battery that holds the settings, as well as
time and date.

Frank

I've never heard of that kind of battery. There is probably memory that
holds this information. I've never had that kind of battery in any of
my digital cameras and I have a few. I also have a G10.

Odds are that they are using a supercapacitor for this purpose instead
of a coin cell.

Also the sizes you posted are large email/HD TV size, not print size...
OK for 4x5 prints but no larger. It sounds like he burned off this
reduced size set from the original jpegs _then_ processed the raw files
to make prints... maybe this is the result of sending you a preview of
the full unedited set to chose your favorites before he spends the time
adjusting the keepers? It would be more professional to do his own
culling and only show decent looking versions but as you've learned,
making those final adjustments is a lot of work & costs money/time. The
underexposure may have been intentional, to prevent blowing out highlights.

Try this one if you can find it. I got it for a few bucks and though it's
plastic, it's very fast and nice and small! Most of the "Hispeed" readers
are not high speed at all.
