Na, this is unrelated to the select or crop tools and has always been this way. Any floating layer will be resized with sampling, meaning that its edges will be antialiased. This is not immediately apparent in PS when cropping the layers to that size, but causes the problem when saving for web. Hence the logical workflow must be to fill those layers after the transform, use Solid Fill adjustment layers or, if possible, even merge down such layers to the background.

Why not create your styled text on a transparent layer, then save as a PNG24?

No filled rectangle to deal with—just your text and fully alpha-channeled transparency. It'll work over any background color you choose for your webpage.

One thing I've noticed, which I've never seen written, is that when you resize a layer it anti-aliases the edge. If I want to resize a finished image, I flatten it first, then resize. For some reason a flattened image keeps a sharp edge, whereas one in layers does not.

I'm not clear as to what you are saying. If the screen has artifacts, then it's most likely an issue with the browser not refreshing the drawing or, on the other hand, possibly wrong framerate/ jiffies settings in the file. Other issues could include pixels near the edges that do not fall within the color palette, thus giving away the nature of the image... Could you provide a link to the file for review?

Well, but are you a student in the sense of being entitled based on Adobe's terms and conditions? If so, the question should answer itself. In that case it wouldn't even matter, if you own a previous version...

I'm thinking about the getting the Intel 80gb MLC ssd drive for primary use as a scratch disk...I may get a SLC if I can justify the price...

Has anyone tried SSD's as a scratch disk. Any 'real world' experiences out there?

Cheers.

It's been tried, but the results haven't been good enough to justify the cost, at least that's my interpretation. Sorry I can't point you to a review. My feeling is that we'll need to wait for the next generation, but I hope I'm wrong. I want one too. :)

Ian,

Are the files you resave on a local drive? Do they accidently have the R/O flag set?

I only get what you describe when I open a file that comes off a CD or DVD, and then try to resave it.

Adobe thinks the variations command is in PS CS4, too, so I would assume it should be. Don't know why it wouldn't be in yours.

Robert Tansky:I deleted the preferences file in the appdata roaming adobe
folder but it's still not there, is there a different way to reset preferences?

It is in the FAQ:

<http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.ee747eb>

but to reset the settings file you press Cntl-Shift-Alt keys immediately after double clicking on the Photoshop CS4 icon to start the program. You should get a dialog box asking if you wish to delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings File.

However, to use Variations you need to be in 8-bit color mode and can't be in Lab or Indexed Color mode. If it is missing it could be because the plug-in wasn't installed for some reason. In the x64 bit version under Vista x64 it should be in the folder C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4 (64 Bit)\Locales\en_US\Additional Plug-Ins\Win\Filters. The 32-bit version should be here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Locales\en_US\Additional Plug-Ins\Win\Filters.

It seems really strange that Nik would leave much behind after uninstalling, or that some stray Nik reg entry would affect PS behavior. The only thing I can think of is if you somehow got the auto loading of the plugin stuck on after uninstalling.

I've been using them for years and always install all my 3rd party plugins to a separate folder for times of upgrading and/or troubleshooting.

If that command isn't there (it might be grayed out for a couple of
minutes when starting) then it's pretty safe to assume someone has sold
you a pirated copy. It's most likely a volume license that someone stole
from work.

What other nasty little things they've added to it I couldn't tell you.

Who could change their mind? If Adobe told me it IS legit, how could they
change their mind? They could just yank the number back?

Yep. Perhaps the number is a new pirate one. You are using it, and suddenly 3000 other people start using it. Well, Adobe will add it to the list of pirate numbers and you are out of luck.

Hello again...

Was attempting to clean up a photo enlargement last nite utilizing 'Unsharp Mask'...inadvertantly changed the 'Threshold' setting in the dialog window...& failed to notice what this setting was previously engaged at.

[this happens to me every so often, aamof.]

so...I'm using Photoshop CS3. What is the default number for this setting ???

(or...perhaps more importantly...how does one return *all* such dialog settings in Photoshop back to factory default ???)

Thanks very much,

Mark Forman

Deleting the preferences file (see the FAQ for how).

I don't think I have changed mine, and it is set at Amount 50, Radius 1.0, Threshold 0

[photoshop-beginners] Re: Changing words

Another option is to open your saved file double click the layer which
have the blending options you want to use then click new style.
Give the style a name in the new style box that opens and click ok and
close the layer style window.
Now you can add your style to any text or other layer by clicking on
the layer you want to add the style to, then click on the Styles tab
find your saved style and click on it to add the style to your layer

aaaaaahh! guys, we're starting to talk at cross purposes.
it's nothing about the PAR output on saving or whatever, this works correctly as it should.

IT'S ABOUT THE THE POOR PREVIEW QUALITY ITSELF.
The screenshots i've postet shows the difference. it's a PAL DV Widescreen setup, to view the Final (correct) Image you have to turn on PAR correction but the preview quality goes down - this is the problem, whenever my client is sitting by.

To have crisp font and shapes at preview you have to turn PAR off, if you want to have perfect circles instead of eggs you have to turn PAR on and get a choppy look of the artwork.

It's the same issue in AE, but there, in the preferences file is a hidden value you can turn off but it's unsupported due lack of testing by adobe.

got it now?

Oh well as it the warning says if you want quality turn off the preview and there is not much you can do about it.

It is a good complaint but you cannot do much about it now. Perhaps there will be some improvement in the future if may people complain.

If you want to have perfect circles instead of eggs, you use SQUARE pixels. When you use a pixel aspect ratio such as the widescreen one you mentioned, that is when you get egg-shaped circles. Like I said, you probably have your monitor set to the wrong resolution. Either take the hint, or stop complaining.

Really, to fix this you should have your final output device on your desk. If you are doing a video or video frames, have a TV (normal or highdef) on your desk, and set the Photoshop preview to use that. I haven't used it but i know there is like a "firewire preview" or something you can use. So then on your computer monitor it can be crappy but the TV will show the actual correct image.
Look up "video preview" in the PS help.

I took in my USB stick this afternoon and thought I might come up with something conclusive. However, my intention was thrawted by another daft aspect of Fuji Photo Kiosks. I had only a dozen or so images, all with Preview turned off, but the Photo Kiosk a minute or so to load several hundred images. It was rounding up all the images in the trash.

I brought this up with the attendent and he told the story of person turning up with an 8GB stick and a few dozen images to print, only to find thousands of old images coming up from the trash. There is no solution in that case but to go home and empty the trash (unless the attendant lets you plug in your USB stick to his computer).

In summary, I did not see any sus files associated with the images I wanted to print, so maybe these kiosks are reading the preview as separate images. But it was hard to tell because there were so many images on the kiosk.

My next step is to go back with a completely blank USB stick, except for two images: one with Preview on and one with Preview off. And I'll do the same with a CDRW.

I'm nail this problem yet.

Windoze boxes often interpret the resource fork of a Mac file as a separate
file.

That's a bit backwards. Mac writes the double file so it can be read back to Mac from a non-HFS disk.

Shift-click or Command-click in the layers panel to highlight the layers you want, then drag them to the trash can at the bottom of the Layers Palette.

At least I think that feature was added in CS.

No, it wasn't. CS 2 I think.

Just turn off visibility on the Layers you don't want and choose Delete Hidden Layers from the flyout. Or link the ones you don't want and choose Delete Linked Or put them in a set and trash the set.

Not to worry, that was the last post of yours I ever saw.

I'm all broken up, lol ...

The only real difference between Time Machine and other BU schemes, like SuperDuper! is that it's based on hourly backups, rather than a single backup per day. It's "intrusive" but that's the price you pay for a larger margin of safety. You can configure the other apps to "run on their own" as well, just not every hour.

Personally, I'm fine with a single, daily backup that's run overnight using SuperDuper! or DejaVu. I've never tried Time Machine, tho.

So far I continue with manual daily backups at the end of the day, except that new images and major work product (like a new ad completion) are immediately backed up. Time Machine sounds interesting but I find the idea of an app automatically backing up a bit scary when doing it manually is so easy.

Also I use daily backup as a good time to purge; e.g. when I build an ad I may have a dozen large evolutionary versions and after the work is submitted and the deadline is past most of the evolutionary versions can be deleted.

I use SuperDuper! for my daily auto backups. But as for previous versions of a job, I always save my files with sequential revision "numbers". For example, my files are all named [job no.]-[client/job title]-[revision no.]. So, the job with three rounds of billable changes:

2075-ABC Widgets and Gadgets Ad
2075-ABC Widgets and Gadgets Ad-REVA
2075-ABC Widgets and Gadgets Ad-REVB
2075-ABC Widgets and Gadgets Ad-REVC-FINAL

I can find any earlier iteration (obviously) and I have a quick history for billing purposes. That's my "time machine".

So much for testing websites with Windows then. This laptop will probably not serve my purposes. I may try to sell it, unless Apple will allow me to turn it in for something else, which I doubt. I'm disappointed that my husband couldn't use it but I don't fault him for it. It's just one of those things.

Is it true that CS3 will not run well on Leopard?

If you are serious about such a software question that has been discussed ad nauseam you should probably start another thread rather than adding it here on this hardware thread.

If you want to test Web sites from a Windows machine in the way that the average viewer, with a non-color managed browser on a non-calibrated screen, might see them; all that you need is the cheapest box from Costco!

Regarding CS3 on Leopard: Snow Leopard is due within the next few weeks; and you have CS4 anyway.

CS3 PS recognizes up to 3gb of installed memory even on boxes with more, should the prefs slider be set to use 100% of the 3gb if much more is available (10gb) in the mac?

Does the "ideal range" indication assume that the 3gb that has been identified is actually the total installed amount?

thx.

Memory allocation/utilization is complex, not simple math. Many folks find some number less than 100% (e.g. 70%) works best, others seem OK with 100%. Do trial and error with your specific workflow.

hi Allen,

I guess the question that I'm curious about is whether the calculation for the "ideal range" takes into consideration the additional ram, or whether this was a legacy tool, developed when there was a real ram limitation.

thanks again,

And if you will be needing the file at different resolutions (such as for print reproduction and for Web), always create the art at the highest resolution you will need. Then make a copy with a non-confusing new name for a lower res version and save it.

Len,

Is there a way to go directly to the window that deals with resolution
size/quality which says something like "smaller" to "larger in a sliding
scale and which seems to have a numerical scale that corresponds with
this that maxes out at "12"?

Sounds like you are working in .jpg format. Don't create art this way, as it is lossy. That is, every time you open-save-close-open a file, you are losing file information, replacing it with artifacts (garbage). Work in a non-lossy format, such as .psd or .tif. You can always do a copy and save as a .jpg if you need it (for email or Web, for example).

Don't be embarrassed: that one seems to trip everyone up at least once! No-one expects it to
be something as simple as the Caps Lock key. And as much as we love our kitties, sometimes
they do cause problems–and of course THEY think they're being helpful! =)
