I think that any reference to the S/N being on the back of the disk must
have refered to the Floppies version

Shaz is not looking at a floppy disk when they refer to 'at the back of the CD'. The confusion is over the production batch number on the CD media, which is different than the user license serial number. These are different numbers. Unless the white serial number sticker was applied by the user to the CD, the CD will not have the program's serial number.

Example image: OMR-014 <http://stommel.tamu.edu/~baum/boots/MISC/BEATLES/MFSL/ABBEY_ROAD_MFSL_BOOT/Actual_CD.jpg>

I KNOW that Shaz is referring to the back of a CD.

But the Guide to which she referred, mentioned S/Ns being on the "back of Disks" and they have never been there on Adobe CDs … as far as I can recall.

Hi Everyone

Firstly, thanks for all your help - I do appreciate it. I purchased the software from a shop quite a while back. I got Adobe Photoshop 5.5 and Adobe Illustrator 5.5 both complete and boxed (CD versions). I assumed the serials would be with the documentation, but after looking through it there was no reference to a number. I guess from the forum posts it seems the serials must have been removed beforehand, leaving me with useless copies of great software. Is there anything that can be done short of just learning from the documentation?

Thanks

I am afraid that you were "had" by that shop — and that those programs' S/Ns had already been registered to someone else and used a s part of an Upgrade Path.

It is not going to be worth your time bothering with that old documentation — you would probably do much better to buy one of the excellent third-party books about the current CS4 versions.

How did we jump from "Adobe Photoshop 3.0 (Mac)" to "Adobe Photoshop 5.5"?

Is there anything that can be done short of just learning from the documentation?

Scrap the idea of using Sheepshaver for learning. The only reason any of us use it is to run a vintage operating system to open vintage documents that do not fare well in more modern apps.

If you want to learn photo editing (graphics), you would do much better to run GIMP (gimp.org) natively on your XP machine (or purchase a more modern version of Photoshop). GIMP, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. run on both Windows and Mac (with the versions appropriate to the respective systems). There is no need to be jumping through hoops to run an old emulated system. Free, GPL graphic software available today is better than the commercial software you are trying to run in OS9.

I create large "Posters" for presentation at scientific meetings. I do most of the work in Photoshop CS3. Tables, and particularly complex text boxes (those where text wraps around multiple photographs, for example) I create in InDesign CS3, and then cut and paste into Photoshop.

Text created in, or pasted directly into Photoshop remains editable text. InDesign text boxes and tables enter Photoshop as smart objects. They can be re-sized without pixilation, but the text is no longer editable. Double-clicking on the table in Photoshop opens Illustrator, not InDesign.

If I create a pdf version, the so-called smart objects are no longer even scalable (pixilate when viewed larger than 100%). Their embedded text is not searchable by database/internet search engines: Photoshop text is searchable.

Is there a way to transfer text boxes and tables from InDesign into Photoshop and still have editable text and editable tables (editable text within the table structure)?

What about transferring your images from PS to IND (working in reverse)?

This is like feeding mashed carrots to a baby by sticking a spoon in through the diaper. You have it backwards.

InDesign is intended to assemble text and graphics created in other programs (Photoshop).

Create your initial art in Photoshop, save as PDF/PDP and place in InDesign. This will allow live text created Photoshop and text created in InDesign to be fully searchable in the final PDF file.

I have thousands of hours working in Photoshop over 15 years. I have neither the time or the inclination to learn enough about InDesign to work in it on a daily basis. And unless they changed it in CS3, InDesign cannot support pages large enough for what I'm doing (4-feet by 8-feet is a "normal" page size).

That's correct, that's how Smart Objects work – they will open in Illustrator.

Aren't they editable in Illustrator?

You should be able to do your edits in Illustrator, save the file (without re-naming it) and you will see the change in Photoshop instantly.

That's not good for you?

18 foot limit in IND. If you have 15 years experience in PS, IND will be a dream to learn. I'm very confident you'll ultimately save a lot of time working this way. My guess is you have many workarounds and tricks you've learned to support this workflow. Could you quickly hand it off to someone not familiar with it? If the answer is no...

Wow, you've had 15 years to realize better workflows and this is the best you could imagine?! :)

InDesign and Illustrator can be used for large formats.

You can also work to scale on a letter-sized page in any program.

Is there a way to transfer text boxes and tables from InDesign into Photoshop
and still have editable text and editable tables (editable text within
the table structure)?

No. This is why the rest of us work the other way. Submit a feature request to Adobe if this is important to you.

I work quite efficiently in Photoshop. I dabble (poorly) in InDesign. Other than accidently, by double clicking on a table in Photoshop, I've never even opened Illustrator. I could not do what I do in any other program.

I didn't ask for advice on how to change my well-established workflow to fit someone else's skill-set. I asked if there is a way to transfer text boxes and tables from InDesign into Photoshop without their becoming "smart objects" that lack editable text? Or, once they are "Smart Objects," can they be converted back to actual text inside Photoshop?

This is not about skill-set. This is about doing what you want with the tools you have. You have it backwards. Either change your workflow or change your tools.

Have you tried exporting PDF from InDesign and placing that in Photoshop? You can re-edit the InDesign file and create a revised PDF file to place in Photoshop.

== 10 of 10 ==
Date: Thurs, Mar 5 2009 12:03 pm

Yes. I started exporting InDesign to PDF and pasting the PDF into Photoshop. That was the only way I could make it work at first. None of that set of posters went into a database, so the final PSDs weren't saved as PDFs. The tables still came in as smart objects, so I doubt they would have gone back to PDF as text. I'll open one and see.

I don't have that many tables, and most are pretty simple. At this point I'm thinking about just creating blank tables in InDesign and pasting text into the boxes in PhotoShop.

To add to Conrad and Michael's suggestions, sometimes I create a rectangular "template" box depending on the number of objects I need to align, especially if I don't want to be swamped by too many guides. (On a side note, I'd love to have the ability to use different colored guides and to be able to turn on/off each set of guides!)

Buko,

Many thanks.

So regarding my problem with the Brush tool, that post would mean that it is the eyedropper tool that sets up how the Brush tool, and probably also the Clone Stamp tool, etc., work.

Is there a pithy specific passage anywhere (in Adobe documentation etc.) that explains how and why it all works that way?

Or could you explain it?

I am very grateful for this reply and thank you again for it.

Mark

I see no reference HDR in Margulis' glossary. Ann, are you talking about Chap. 15? Isn't that a discussion of fake profiles where he combines 2 files in an adjustment layer? I've taken a look at Adobe's 32 bit and it appears they are discussing video images. I myself thought HDR ( high dynamic range ) meant a capture of 4.0 shadow detail ( i.e., scanners and cameras ).

Sorry, if I confused you!

My reference to Margulis' book was purely in connection with the relationship between the RGB space and the creation of CMYK separations.

HDR and 32-bit Channels is an entirely different issue and you can learn more about that in Photoshop/Help/.

I have a 2 color book that is being illustrated. The illustrator is using Photoshop to create 2 color illustrations. These are saved as DCS 2, in Multichannel mode. I was talking to the designer today and have been told that the illustrations will be placed on tints and or patterns.

Is there a way for anyone to make a 2 channel image in Photoshop that will either have no background or with a clipping path?

What is happening when I try that now is that the image will only place into InDesign one channel at a time with a path.

[photoshop-beginners] Conveting a gif file?

Hey guys, I'm working with a gif file and I'm trying to figure out a way to change it to something I can add layers to. For some reason, in this gif file I saved off the net, it won't let me do the "add layer" button to it, even when I resave the file as a psd document.

You see, it's got a transparent background, but there's a lot of unnecessary white pixels around the edges of the picture (which you can hardly see with the transparent bg. So, I want to put in another layer, change the background to something dark, zoom in, remove the excess white pixels, change the layer back and then resave the gif with the corrections, but like I said, I can't put in a new layer.

Now, I can do this just fine using Fireworks, but there SHOULD be a way to do this on Paint Shop, right?

Thanks!

Hi Gernot,

Thank you for the explanation. I have an understanding of most of that, but I may have to do a little reading. :)

I do like your idea of just creating your background cell to ensure that the color matches.

I'm going to test some other colors for fun to see if I get similar results with any of the others. It frustrates me when something just works and I don't understand why. I like to understand why.

Thank you again.
Have a great day,
Debbie

You can do what you want using the Select tool instead of the crop tool. Have Style = Fixed size then type 150px x 90px in the size boxes. Click on the image, move the selected area to where ever you need it, then Image, Crop.
Geoff.

click the clear button in the option bar in the crop tool first. (geoff's way works too, btw). THEN put in the size and units

150px and 90px

make sure to include the "px" after the #s.

If you leave the resolution box blank, whether the crop tool resamples or not then depends on the size units you choose. If pixel units are entered, the original resolution is preserved and resampling must occur to effect that. If inches are used, resampling does NOT occur.

And if that's too difficult for you (only joking) :-) go to Start > Search and type in Camera Raw. When the search shows you the file path as given in para 4 of the previous post, right click on the line > Explore and hey presto, as though by magic, there should be your .8bi file. Remove it (save it on the desktop or somewhere for a few days should things not work out) and place the new .8bi file in its place.

When you relaunch Photoshop go to Help > About > Camera Raw which should then indicate the newer version of Camera Raw being installed. If it doesn't then you've put it in the wrong place so now start over all over again (without going to jail) and try again. :-)

Sorry, there isn't a way to uninstall just the 64bit version. This is a limit in the license technology.

Can Photoshop CS4 be silently installed\uninstalled without the source files for 64bit?

Since Photoshop CS4 is 3 times the size of CS3 I would like to know if CS4 can be silently installed\uninstalled without using the payloads for the 64bit versions.

Okay I got it to install but I am getting this message about not having having VersionCue.DLL installed. I don't have it in the directory it's specifying, but I can't seem to find it online either. If can run my adobe programs just fine, but when I try to go to like my ITunes or My Downloads, it gives me this message.

Any ideas how I can fix it? I really don't want to uninstall everything. I have already done that so many times. I read an article written by Adobe that said essentially they don't know what the crap is goin on. Which I found real reassuring.

I posted a couple here already, and this msg is a follow up to advice for some of my problems and other things I read in going through posts.

I updated CS4 to 11.0.1 and I got the most recent drivers for my graphics card -- and they *were* recent, February 2009. Unfortunately this only seems to have made matters worse.

Editing text seemed to be a bit better, but images had grey backgrounds and selecting parts of the image turned the whole thing black. Calibrating monitor didn't help. I dumped the preferences and now I'm back to what I expect as far as image handling goes (no grey/black issues) but the text tool is at least as bad as it was prior to the changes and possibly worse.

If I type a word at regular typing speed it's a full second + before it appears. Highlight one letter in a word and hit the delete key -- it takes even longer for this to happen: visually nothing happens a good second +.

Vista Business, Radeon® X1650 Pro 512MB AGP, 2 gig RAM (Photoshop can use up to 70%) and huge amounts of scratch disk space -- four drives, the first of which has 350 gig. I'd say more but I keep falling farther behind on deadlines.

I've posted on the Dell forums at <http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19262038/19441981.aspx#19441981> - I wait to see if that brings anything constructive.

could be ram or scratch disk space. try resetting the preferences first ( <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1?14@@> ).

make sure you have enough free hard drive space on whatever drive you have designated as the scratch drive.

make sure the memory allocated to photoshop in preferences is set to about 55%.

if none of the above works, post back with your system specs and more detail.

<obvious_sarcasm>
You mean that canvas rotation and on-canvas brush resizing aren't improvements?
And 3D artists don't need to paint on or manipulate 3D models?
Gee, you should have told us that before hundreds of illustrators asked for those features.
</obvious_sarcasm>

We are listening to all of our market segments. We are getting improvements in for all of them. But not every segment is going to get a huge feature in every release.

Moxi - nice demos, but scales horribly. They're still working on it.
Remember that just because something has a nice demo (or a paper at SIGGRAPH) does not mean it is ready to ship in a commercial product that has to work across a wide range of hardware, OS versions, document sizes, etc. Sometimes we can come up with better algorithms and make it work -- but that takes time. And sometimes there's just no good way to make them work.

Or maybe get a replacement if I can produce a valid license?

Or am I basically out in the cold here?

------> RESOLVED!!!!! :) who'd thunk it, but reinstalling Picture Project fixed the issue with CS. I reinstalled it on a whim to see if it would help, and now that it did, I have noticed while opening files in CS, in the status/progress bar at the bottom of the CS window it says "reading Nikon NEF PP format." Apparently the "PP"=Picture Project, weird. I decided to try it after Geoff suggested ViewNX as part of a solution and I realized I uninstalled ViewNX from my machine recently; and after Dennis suggested Nikon made a plugin (I assumed only Adobe made the plugins for PS) it made sense that it would be some Nikon software I uninstalled that "broke" CS.

I thank everyone that took time to respond (no thanks to Adobe Tech support or customer service) :) :) :)

Hi everyone,

I have to enlarge quite a few high-res images for a catalog project. My rule of thumb has always been 120% of actual size max and I'm still safe.

However, the client wants some images to cover spreads, which would force me to blow those pics sometimes past 200% of their actual size.

I called the printer who's printing the job to get their thoughts on fractiles software and they said that they typically go to 200% of actual size with little or no pixilation/degradation. I find that hard to believe...

I am running PS CS4. I would really appreciate any thoughts on the matter or recommendations on fractiles software.

Thanks!

Jose
