I got it...for the extra $100 I will probably go with the CS4 Extended. But I have to say, it really seems quite ridiculous that you can't 'upgrade' to CS$ non-extended....with the understanding, of course, that you couldn't use the CS4 non-extended to upgrade to CS5 extended. I am sure there are lots of people like me that bought the extended version to see if they would use the 3D tools and find they don't. Not only that, to my knowledge it was never made clear that once you 'go extended' that 'you can never go back'. If I knew I was going to be locked in to buy the more expensive version with each and every new release I never would have done so. I suspect Adobe has sprung this 'gotcha' on lots of people like me!

Back again with no progress:
I saw a tryout version of CS4 was released (mine is an upgrade but I now think they are essentially the same file) so while I was away I downloaded and installed it on another machine. Install was OK. I pulled the video card from that machine and brought it home, installed it with an updated driver using the version of CS4 I downloaded. Same problem.
Reverted to an old restore point, same problem (with the new CS4 dl).
Did a temp file clean up (very little there as my machine is not on line) and checked defrag (didn't need one, has 170gb free).
So I've worked through everything that support emailed me (very little other than check the kbs). The installed logs have a couple of minor confusing (to me) errors, but they appear simply to be saying that they are ignoring 64 bit version of payloads..which I assume should be expected.
I have not tried messing with fonts yet, that might be a next step, or a Windows repair, but with SP3 on my machine and the original XP disk that might not go well.

At this point, I would back up everything important to another drive and bite the bullet..clean install of XP. Yeah, it's a pain. But in the 7 days you have been messing with it, you would be up and running. The suggestions offered here so far are rather comprehensive so if it still won't install...
You might also first run some clean up and maintenance utilities, among them CHKDSK:

A utility that looks at the Registry and removes the crap can be used as well. My favorite:

I have exhausted Adobe possible help sources. The best help I received was a sugggestion to Request addition of a legacy feature by submitting a Feature Request/Bug Report Form (do a search under adobe.com). I would encourage those who want this feature to do the same. Every vote counts!

When I tried to use file browser in PS7 this morning, it opened and, instead of showing the directory tree structure that I last left it in, it only showed the desktop with the + sign to expand that folder. When I click the + sign, I get the following error message:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error."
What could have happened and how can I fix this so I can use my file browser again?

Are your problems on a laptop? Windows based? XP or Vista?
Do a disk cleanup
Download CCleaner it gets rid of a lot of crap that disk cleanup misses.
Defrag your hard drive.
When was the last time you cleaned out the dust in your case?
Look over the CPU to see if it is free of dust over the fins and cooling fan. Also check your capacitors for buldging on the top. When you load photoshop it eats a lot of CPU cycles thus causing heat. Both CPU and buldging capacitors can cause what you see.
CPU fan spinning slow or is it sticking?
Run a spyware or rootkit check?
Turn off malware protection you may have running before you install.
If you google your problem, you will see that what other people told you above is correct. However, you can read that dust, CPU overheat and buldging capacitors are high on the list too.

Try the following. Observe very closely and see if you can tell what's happening.
•Create a new document at 400px × 400px; RGB, 8 bit, White background, square pixel aspect ratio. Resolution setting doesn't matter.
• Tap your "D" key to return Pshoto's defualt FG & BG colors to black & white. Tap your "F" key to toggle screen mode to "Full Screen Mode with Menu Bar."
• Make the documents rulers visible if they are not (CTRL + R). Right click on either of the rulers to drop the menu and make sure the unit of measurement is set to display values in pixels.
• Zoom in to 1600% anywhere in the middle of your document. You'll be able to see tick marks on the rulers that designate each and every row and column of pixels. THAT'S the invisible, intrinsic "grid" I'm talking about, present in every Photoshop document. Want to see Photoshop's user configurable grid? Tap the
CTRL + ' shortcut a couple times. Leave your grid visible.
• Select your rectangle Custom Shape Tool. In the Options Bar drop the Geometry Options menu on the right side of the row of shape icons. UNcheck the box next to "Snap to Pixels."
• In your document window click and drag out a small rectangle shape, without regard to where you begin and end. Notice the antialiasing that is introduced by Photoshop if your shape's diagonally opposite corners aren't started and ended in precise alignment with the ruler tick marks. Drag out guidelines as I have in this second image and you'll see what I mean.
• Select your Move Tool (V). With the Shape Layer highlighted and active in the Layers Palette, tap your keyboard's arrow keys. You will see that the shape will ONLY move in 1 pixel increments. Pay attention to the antialiasing along the straight edges of the rectangle shape. Notice how the rows of pixels on either side of the vector line don't change in color/brightness value?
• Select your Path Selection Tool (black arrow "A"). Click inside the rectangle shape to select it; you'll see all 4 corner anchor points display as tiny gray filled-in boxes. Tap your keyboard's arrow keys again. Now, notice how you can move the vector outline in increments of a fraction of a pixel. You can do this with vector-defined paths (which you have just selected). In the previous step, you were using your Move Tool; and its overriding function is to move pixels. The vector path just follows along, in 1 pixel incremental movements. Also notice when you move the vector path in these fraction-of-a-pixel increments, the rows of pixels which Photoshop generates as antialiasing will change in color/brightness. This antialiasing is recalculated for each fractional movement so that the edge of the shape appears to be positioned mid-pixel. But, because we know that the pixel is an indivisible unit of measurement for a raster-based image, this is only done to create an illusion that a shape's edge sits at mid-pixel.
I know this reply is long and wordy (I could have gone into a deeper explanation, but I'm hoping this will suffice), but there's really no way to explain it quickly. Hopefully, this exercise has given you a better understanding of what you were seeing before you started this thread, and why it happens.
The takeaway lesson is this: If you want dead accurate and hard, clean horizontal and vertical edges, make sure that the vector paths which define the shape are aligned to Photoshop's intrinsic, invisible pixel grid.

I've just downloaded it and will report back when I have it installed.
I didn't see anything in the release notes about PS CS4, just certain games that it improves. We shall see...

I'm trying out CS4 and I'm running into one annoyance. I like to keep my main window squeezed down to a minimum size with my documents and panels floating so that I can see my desktop under the application. Almost Mac-style. The problem I'm running into with CS4 is that whenever I open a new document or use Ctrl+Alt+Plus or Ctrl+Alt+Minus to zoom, the document will be squeezed down to a minimum height as well. I didn't run into this problem with CS2. Is there a way to correct this?

no i didn't shoot that one. that was a school photo done by a pro. the same guy does all the events around here, school photos, breakfasts with santa, school dances, etc. he's very good. must be very hard to consistently take pics that good under such stress (parents and kids screaming, rushing through lines).
I've really been meaning to get him to do a regular family portrait for us under better conditions. he's a super nice guy and he works out of his home or will come around.

From a cut-out image on a transparent background, I use Save for web specifying a black matte to create a JPEG. The resulting image has compression artefacts within the black matte around the image just the same as if the original image had a black background. I can then apply a mask channel copied from the orignal file to the JPEG and fill the matte with black. Delete the mask and Save and I have a JPEG with a matte free of artefacts.
Is there a simple way to achieve the same thing and what's the point of the matte option?
