I'm also very confused. I found the "Change Layer Content..." option helpful and don't see a good alternative.
Original method:
- Draw vector shape
- Then switch to gradient and tweak the colours.
Best method I can figure out now:
- Create gradient layer... don't know colours yet since it's not at right size.
- Delete layer mask
- Add "Hide all" vector mask
- Shift-Draw vector shape
- Then re-open gradient settings to set colours.
Gradient Overlay is NOT an alternative, and was handy for doing a double gradient effect on one layer.
Is there an actual good alternative I'm missing? This is really annoying...

While the first one is clearly picking up where Samuel Beckett left us hanging, I think I can detect a hint of Francis Bacon in the second.

In some cases yes, in some not. This is related to how the hardware accelerated functions are synced to the rest of the screen redraw. Depending on your screen layout and general graphics config, you may disable/enable the "wait for vsync" and similar options and see if it makes any difference...

Don`t know, if I understand the OP right. In my case if I move a large image with the hand tool (maybe flick-panning) I sometimes get to extremely blurry areas that get redrawn and sharp after maybe half a second. Why is that? Is it because of not enough graphics memory (but I have 512MB)?

Mylenium sorry but...
am cs4 trial user and 4 of my friends too. for example my system amd 6400+ and a gtx 260 and 4 gig of ram an vista x64 sp1. the systems of my friends: xp32 sp3 2 gig ram and a 7950 gx2 , xp32 sp2 2 gig ram and ati 4850 and the last vista32 sp3 gtx380 and 3 gig ram and we ALL do have that strange issue. if we zoom out the pictues gets VERY unsharp - if we zoom in they are sharp....for example..if we zoom out and the picture is unsharp..we klick the window and undock it...the picture becomes sharp...if we leave the mouse button it gets unsharp again...as if a unsharp mask filter renders the windwos...its UGLY...i think i get eye cancer.we tried everything...drivers...old ones..new ones...motherboard drivers...anti antialising settings mapping texturing..everything..NOTHING....i do a LOT of people photography and landscape..with this problems it is not possible for me to zoom out and look at the whole picture and decide if it is good or not..my eyes are beginning to burn after 10 minutes of work and i work on 2 eizos 19". if i turn of opengl this issue is no more but cs4 is verry laggy then and slow...even if i adjust cache and memory settings. when i activate open gl and go to advanced settings and uncheck averything this issue is still happening....VERY unsharp.
so now..my trial is running and cs4 is a disaster so far to me. if this will not be corrected soon or no one can help me i thing i will keep cs3 till cs5 will come.
please help us!

I've found that CS4 is also much slower at rendering picture packages.
P4 3 GHz, SATA HDs with dedicated scratch drive, XP32, NVIDIA 8600GT, 2GB RAM --- Photoshop 6.0 was lightning fast compared to CS4!

Check the permissions for your config directory (Documents and Settings/Janet/Application Data/Adobe/Photoshop CS3). Likewise, check whether you have full access to the registry. Another possible cause may be some automated system protection and/ or backup system, which will restore the original prefs file after a while because it doesn't consider the new one to be valid. This would also apply to server-side profiles, update distribution and syncing in general.

QUOTING MJ Murphy above:
"Moving images around the screen leaves a copy of the image where it used to be for a second. Very distracting. When I zoom in on a 20 MB image, in CS3 I can click the hand tool, drag the image around at will and it moves as smoothly as if I were moving a paper image around on a smooth surface. Cs4 is another story. As I click and drag I see a bunch of squares getting redrawn all over the screen. Very distracting."
SAME HERE!
AND: CS4 renders picture packages much more slowly than even 6.0 which is what I was running before we bought the full version of CS4.
CS4 does not take advantage of CPU power because it rarely uses more than 60% when rendering. (XP32, P4 HT 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM, dedicated scratch drive). Very disappointing...

The ironic thing is... if you go into the liquify tool, its FASTER at panning, redrawing, brush responsiveness and it liquifize smooth as silk...
BUT when you go back into CS4 with or without GPU opengl enabled... Its so slow in comparison.
Perhaps its the fact that my desktop resolution is 2560x1600 (since i'm using a 30 inch monitor...
But i dont think thats it, especially when you factor in that with opengl off, CS4 is still far slower than CS3.
GPU on and off in CS4 is roughly the same slow performance. The GPU slows down the performance a bit more... but overall, the program runs nothing like CS3 did.

I have the lagging problem (and I have an Intel processor), but I wouldn't call CS4 a disaster. The rotating canvas (something Painter already had 10 years ago) removes my number one complaint about Photoshop as a pure drawing application.
I'm really surprised that in their beta testing, Adobe never encountered the lag problem, considering how many others like myself experience it now. Maybe their list of beta testers is too narrow. They should have done a public beta release like they did with Dreamweaver, and have thousands of testers.
I trust that Adobe has put top priority on solving this. Once it's solved, then I'll be delighted with CS4. Annoying, should have been tested more before relase, but not by any means a disaster.

Hi. Strange thing just happened to me:
I save a CS3 .psd file with text layers (they are actively installed on my XP system, they appear in the Photoshop type tool's drop-down list).
I close the file. I reopen it three minutes later (because I found a typo).
Upon opening, PS says:
Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for
vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now ?
When I click on "Update", the file opens fine, all text layers display properly and can be edited.
This does not always happen, but it already happened a couple of times to me and I can't track down the problem ...
Any ideas ?
Thanks!
There are dozens of google hits for this error message, mostly in other forums, but in each instance I found, after a bit of investigation, it turned out to be a missing font problem.
(which obviously isn't the case here...)

Try trashing/resetting Preferences as per the FAQs.
Possibly an invisible character (a space or return, for instance) that's in another font?) You could select all the text and make sure it's all in the font(s) you want. Just a shot in the dark.

I have enabled the 3GB switch on a XP Pro (32bit) SP3 system with 4GB RAM and CS4 installed. I haven't had any problems and I think* Photoshop reports a maximum of 2.6GB available RAM but recommends using up to 1.8GB (71%) which has run without any problems so far. The default setting was around 60%.
[*] I'm at work now but can check the exact numbers when I get home.

When I try to edit smart objects via right-click>>edit contents (or double-click on the smart oject layer icon for that matter) this happens:
A.) if I disable [preferences>>file handling>>prefer ACR for JPEG files], PS calculates some seconds with intense HDD activity and then nothing happens visually, no window opens-up for editing, but the history log has the usual new entry "edit contents". Repeated tries result in repeated "edit contents" logs, but no visual changes.
[[In one instance the raster grahpic encapsulated into the smart object got enlarged by 200%-300%. But again, no window opened up for editing. I hit "edit contents" 3-4 times and I could always reproduce this. But ever since that day, it never happened to me again).
B.) if I enable [preferences>>file handling>>prefer ACR for JPEG files], ACR launches and displays the raster graphic the smart object is based on. Upon closing ACR, no window opens-up for editing the smart object.
I have been working with smart objects for some months now and everything worked fine. This bug started occurring some 3 weeks ago, but as I said, sometimes it works, sometimes not. I cannot find any regularities as to what could lead to this malfunctioning. The only regularity I found so far (but could be a coincidence) is that the smart objects affected by the bug were always (at least I don't remember any other case) .jpeg files that I opened in Photoshop(CS3) with abovementioned preference set so that ACR launches upon opening a .jpeg file. In ACR I alt-clicked the open button so that it says "open objects". So the smart objects were always based on a single layer .jpeg raster graphic opened in ACR.
My best bet would be that there is something that ACR writes into the smart object that isn't 100% identical to the way Photoshop would write smart object if I:
1) open the .jpeg file in ACR
2) click open/open copy (not open object)
3) convert the raster graphic to a smart object inside Photoshop itself.
But that's only a guess. I have quite a lot of work to do currently, but I hope to be able to provide additional information quickly enough if need be.

OK, I think my "best bet" is becoming more likely:
I tried the following (with [preferences>>file handling>>prefer ACR for JPEG files] enabled):
A1) open .jpeg file ==> ACR launches
A2) click on "open object"
A3) "edit contents" ==> BUG occurs as described in my OP under "B.)"
B1) open .jpeg file ==> ACR launches
B2) click on "open"
B3) convert raster layer to smart object
B4) "edit contents" ==> bug does NOT occur

Found It!!
Ender and Fred:
Didn't get to try Fred's suggestion as Ender's gave me another idea that fixed the problem -- although it's actually a work-around, and this is a bug.
Ender you said to move the CS3 plugins folder. I didn't know if that was a typo or not, so I tried it with both the CS3 and CS4 plugins. Neither did anything, but I got no additional error messages, just the usual OWL error.
I decided to try Fred's suggestion of eliminating the Preferences so opened them up to record my current settings. On a hunch I unchecked my Additional Plug-ins folder, which is on my second drive, D. I do this because I got tired of losing or copying or installing all my own plugins when I went to a new version. In CS3 I use the same additional plugins setting and there is no problem.
When I unchecked the Additional Plugins folder, the message disappeared. Don't know if the problem is that the additional folder is on another drive or if it's because some of my plugins are incompatible with CS4. This is a bug.
Fred - To answer your questions, I do not have any of the suites. I have standalone PS/Bridge and Lightroom. I also have the full Adobe Acrobat. When I first loaded PS-CS4 from the installer I immediately set my preferences, and yes, I did set the scratch disk. I also set the additional plugins folder. The second time I loaded PS was after a reboot, and the error message appeared for the first time.
