I am waiting for the free trial to be made available from Adobe.
But as I am running low of space on my C drive, will it be possible for me to load CS4 on an external drive, and use the trial version from there?
Thanks

If you are that low on space Its time to buy a bigger hard drive and/or clean off the crap. any drive over 75% full is a disaster waiting to happen. Hard drives are cheap now.

What Buko said.

Also it is definitely not advisable to install Photoshop anywhere other than where it defaults to. It may work and it may not.

what buko and john said. get the drive before photoshop. 500 gig will go for less than 1/2 ps's upgrade costs.

I think I understand what is happening now with the blurring of the image.

When you convert to a 3D tiled painting it creates 3X3 tiles of the image on the 3D plane, but it does it within the same pixel size/canvas size of the original image. So, when you sample in the 3D tiled view and clone across it samples the image at 1/3 the size, and then converts that back into the diffuse texture (the smartobject of the original image) which means it gets upsampled 3X to get back to full size. Clearly not ideal, and the image is getting trashed along the way unfortunately. It would be okay for loose painterly patterns etc, but it's no good at all for anything with even moderate detail.

I am trying to figure out a workaround that makes use of this system because the tiled view makes it very quick to remove seams, but so far I haven't hit on one that is any quicker than just doing this the old-fashioned way with things like the offset filter (or 3rd party software)

Any chance this could be tuned up a bit by Adobe?

If you set the render settings to paint mask on the tiled painting you will see the image turn red, This indicates that paint applied will be oversampled as you found out. To rectify you can change the camera position, 3d object scale or image size to get to a good painting resolution. In the case of tiled painting you can use image size and increase by 300% to get to a 1:1 match. The healing brush is working across all the tiles, but there is an update bug, if you force a render by clicking on the Render Settings button in the 3d panel and click Ok without changing anything all the tiles will get updated.

Great - thanks Ekim!
I tried resizing the canvas before converting to a tiled painting, but it didn't occur to me to do it after - that works great!

A question about quality: do the render settings impact the image quality for cloning purposes? I.e should the anti-aliasing be adjusted for best result (or anything else for that matter) or is that stuff irrelevant for this type of task?

I'll try the update bug workaround for the healing brush - thanks for the help.

I have seen where I should have the scratch disk on a seperate HD (western digital) from the OS and Program disk (Raptor). The only bummer is the raptor is 10k rpm and the WD is only 7500 rpm.

Not sure what Bigger tiles enabled is? I guess I should go to PS help and check this one out unless you can give me a quick 101

Don't need 'Bigger Tiles' for 64bit (it is not available as a 64 bit plugin).

Glenn - yes, I am telling you to update the driver because most of the bugs are in the drivers. If the driver does not fix the bug, then you need to follow up with the video card vendor because they may not have updated the driver for your model and OS yet.

Driver bugs can be hardware and OS dependent, and we have seen some video card firmware bugs as well (updates are normally in the driver or posted with the drivers).

No, it does not follow that there are known good drivers and cards -- because we could not test the drivers and cards on your exact system. The same card and driver version might work on vista on and Intel Core2 system, and fail on Vista for a Pentium4 system, or XPSP3, or XPSP2, or if you have a certain game installed, or a certain utility installed, or while running a certain screensaver, or ......

On a large sampling of Windows systems, with a large sampling of video cards (current, recent, and some ancient), on clean and dirty (lots of apps, lots of history) systems, with AMD and Intel CPUs, with a variety of motherboards and chipsets -- Photoshop CS4 worked without a problem.

But again, just because a model of video card and version of driver work on my systems, don't mean that they will work correctly on your system.

PEC - I'm not so sure about that. We tested with the shipping Windows themes and custom mangling of the themes. I'm really not sure how he could get Photoshop to show what that screenshot shows. (maybe if he set every color in the theme to black?)

From my own tinkering, the only fix I can suggest is to render the font samples using the same colour as the font name menu item. Right now, it appears that the font preview text is always rendered in black. There are other menus that ignore the UI colour selection and always render dark-on-light, but that's squarely in the consistency/aesthetic realm rather than a usability/functionality bug.

I am completely baffled with this and am thinking that it's something obvious I am just missing.

I have a photo open and click on the "Create new fill or adjustments layer" button at the bottom of the Layers panel.

In CS3 I able to create a layer (say Levels) and apply it, then select the eraser tool and delete sections of that adjustment layer that I did not want revealing an unaltered section of the original photo behind it.

I can not seem to do this in CS4. I can add the layer and select the eraser tool but it will not delete anything.

:s Help??

Thanks.

get the adobe clean script and read the instructions before running...

don't forget to read the instructions! :)

on that page you'll find this note:

Start out at Level 2 and advance to Level 3 only if you still have issues
installing your CS3 applications. Running this script removes shared components
created during the installation of CS3 applications.

Note: Level 3 is a hidden option and thus is not listed in the main interface.
To access Level 3 just type "3"( without quotes) when prompted for the
level.

What is the best way to screen print a gradient.

The shirt is 2 colours. Orange and red.

Would you print the whole orange and then do the red separation as a half tone?

thanks

I just installed Photoshop CS4, both the 32 and 64 bit versions (part of the "Master Collection"). After opening the programs I changed the scratch disk location to two separate drives other than where Photoshop resides, where it had placed said file as a default. Now neither Photoshop versions will open.
I get the following message:
"Could not open a scratch file because the scratch file is locked..."
Just one problem, there is no scratch file visible on either of the two drives...
My operating system is Vista Ultimate on a 64 bit Quad CPU machine with 8Gb of ram, two Raptor HDs, four 750Gb HDs configured into one RAID 5 drive and Nvida GEForce 8800GTS graphics card.
Has anyone here experienced a similar problem???
Cheers,
Michael

That string should really read something to the effect " Photoshop will not enable any GPU setting options. Try updating the video card driver or installing a new video card that meets Photoshop CS4 GPU requirements."
