I just isolated Imagenomic's Portraiture 2 to also give that problem.

I wrote to Imagenomic about this and 12 minutes later their reply said they're working on it.

In the meantime there is a workaround: Open and close Imagenomic Plug-in Console from File > Automate > Imagenomic plug-ijn Console.

This is only sticky within a PS session (so not between them).

Got it. Fixed it. Sent it back.

For the benefit of others following along here:

<http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1aECkTbZDleponyNvpHyL6iJXg1m0>The main problem Evelyn was having was that the silhouette I told her to CTRL + Click, in order to make a selection, was on a solid layer. The black silhouette was good, but the rest of that layer was white.

I made a copy of her "Layer 1" with the silhouette.

I ran the free "Peel Off White" filter by BergDesign (For Mac) to clear out all the white in the rest of the layer. Then, the CTRL + Click operation on that layer selected the black silhouette only, making it ready to use as a mask in the "Invert" Adjustment Layer.

Then I created a layer below the now-transparent silhouette and filled it with white.

Read more about "Peel Off White" and a similar free filter for Windows at the following link:

So my black silhouette needed to be on a transparent layer?

Your silhouette doesn't have to be on a separate layer, but making it so made it easy to create the CTRL + Click selection of it. There are other ways you could have done that, but for my workflow, I really like to have elements of a design segregated onto their own layers for easiest and most versatile manipulation.

Layer Properties--->Color...

Just for fun, drop that menu and make a choice--any choice. Then look at your Layers Palette.

Ain't that cool!?

:)

What does it mean that when I went to "layers properties," it said "none," but the background was still white? How would I get my silhouette on a transparent background without having to remove the white background? IOW why was the background white even though the layers properties said the background was none.

I'm guessing that the problem I was having was due to the fact that when I thought I was selecting only the silhouette, I was in fact selecting the silhouette PLUS its background.

This brings me to another source of confusion, i.e., the fact that you can select the whole layer OR objects on the layer, and it's not obvious (at least not to me) when you're doing which. You can have something selected but no marching ants are showing.

I changed the layers properties as you suggested above to a color, but there was no change in the document window. In the layers palette/panel, the color showed up in the tiny window where the eyeball is. Where is the cool part?

Still coming down from my extremely high frustration level of yesterday and earlier today. Not ready to be friends with Photoshop yet. <Ev pouts>

You, however, have been extremely helpful!! :-)

That drop down menu you see in the Layers Properties dialogue has nothing to do with the contents of the document's layer.

Again...choose something other than "None" from that menu. Look at your Layers Palette.

The riddle for the day (and you'll smile when you figure it out) is: What changes when you choose something other than "None?"

When you CTRL + Click on a layer's icon, you're making a selection of all the pixels on that layer that are 51-100% opaque. Any pixels that are less than 50% opaque will appear OUTSIDE of the "marching ants" selection line.

You can also make selections via masks, and this is one of Photoshop's most powerful tools/functions. When you think about it, the most important part of doing edits and adjustments on selected areas of an image is being able to make as accurate a selection as possible.

There are dozens of ways to make selections, and the method or combination of methods you use depends on the nature of the object you want to isolate from its surroundings. The more techniques you know how to apply, the better able you'll be to just look at an image and assess what techniques will most efficiently isolate an object.

Got a little treasure trove that covers that huge subject as well. Strap in tight and put your helmet on...you're about to get hammered with a monster sledge of info:

"That drop down menu you see in the Layers Properties dialogue has nothing to do with the contents of the document's layer."

<sigh> Now why would I think that drop down menu that is labeled " layer properties" would have anything to do with "layer properties"? Rhetorical question.

As I said, when I selected the silhouette layer, then opened the "layers property" drop down menu, and chose "green," a green highlight appears around the eyeball. Should something else be happening?

Also, how would I have created my silhouette on a transparent background? As you can see from the file I sent you, I had a photo, and I traced the figure and then filled it with black. At what point in the process did I have the option to create a transparent background?

<Reiteration>That color change is a visual tool for us to use as a way of organizing and differentiating layers and layer groups. </Reiteration>

"...I had a photo, and I traced the figure and then filled it with black.

I have to assume you knew to trace the figure on a new layer (which will be transparent), right?. Once you've made your shape (either by Pen Tool or by Lasso, or whatever), and you fill it on that new layer, everything you don't fill will remain transparent. Somewhere along the line, you had to have merged your silhouette layer with either a white-filled layer (like the one I created in your PSD) or you flattened it to the Background and then copied that into another document.

Hi,

I have created 8 A4-sized PSD documents in Photoshop CS3 and I would like to create a single PDF document with 8 pages.

Is there an easy way to do this?

I would really appreciate any help that people can offer, as I am stumped!

Thank you in advance,

thanks John and Robert,

I don't have any other PDF-creation applications, however, on the help tool for CS3 Photoshop, there is mention of being able to create multi-page PDFs in photoshop. Unfortunately, it doesn't elaborate much on this.

I'll have a look around in PS some more and see what can be done.

In the meantime, if anyone can shed any light on this, I would appreciate it greatly : )

FILE> Automate PDF presentation
add open files or point it to your folder of files
after you hit save will be a dialog box to choose options
make sure to make the proper selections for quality, based on your purpose
a PDF made for commercial printing will be large
If you want to put it on internet or email you need to select the setttings
for web based doc

OR you could open acrobat and create a multipage document

I think the default is 8.5x11
(not sure) but if you have unusual size paper
make sure to change the page layout to that

the Macrovision stuff that installs a background service (called something
like 'Adobe LM monitor') on your computer?

that's the one.

Aaah. Well in that case I'll pass. I'll make do with Gimp, Paint.net, and CorelDraw X4 (the latter I also got from Amazon Vine). To be honest it would take a great deal to convince me to install spyware-like DRM on my system, and Photoshop just doesn't offer enough over Lightroom + other software to overcome that.

I'm not sure about UK rules but in the US the student edition is highly
restricted...no commercial use and I don't even know if it can be upgraded.

The UK version is the same. However as there's no prospect of me ever using it for commercial purposes it wouldn't have been a big deal

Actually, if you had read the initial post you'd realise that I'm fully aware that Photoshop is hugely powerful. However it doesn't offer enough benefit for my usage (ie retouching of amateur photos) to make it worth the money + computer infection. My above post wasn't an attempt to say that Photoshop is bad, or that Gimp or any of these other freeware programs are even in the same league, I was just stating that my own need for Photoshop's power isn't great enough to make me want to install spyware.

hmmm how about A PAYING JOB! i think that's what the clincher is for most

True, but (again, as I explained above) I'm not a professional photographer/graphic artist/etc. and therefore there is no 'need it for work' motivation.

Hi, i did search but failed to find any real answers.

When i run a Photomerge (using jpegs) i have even tried using the sample jpegs that come with the software of the SF skyline.
I select my images, and it runs the usual sequence of starting the layers and merging then when it ends its just dissappears looking like the software has just opend with nothing happening.
Ive tried every combination to make them work and nothing.

I am using CS4 btw, and ive also tried in CS3 again which is still installed on my partition. and its not working in that either. it used to work with no problems bit not now.

any ideas?

[photoshop-beginners] Changing words

hello all,
I have the word ONE to which I have applied Blending Options to make it
look like glass text and have saved it. Now I need to do the same for
the words TWO, THREE up to TWENTY.
My question is, rather that having to apply all the blending options to
each word in turn is it possible to just delete the word ONE and type
in TWO then delete TWO and type in the word THREE etc and still have
all the blending options already applied.
I hope that this makes sense to you.
If it is possible could you please explain how to a novice.
Using CS3.
T.I.A.,
George.

When you click on Print and the PS print dialog box appears, is there a tick in the box next to "Scale to fit media"? If so, take it off. This is all I can think of that may be causing your problem. I have 2 Epson printers and both will print at the correct size.
Geoff.

I don't have an Epson printer but if your print driver has any options like "borderless printing", "minimize margins", or anything that sounds like that, try turning those options off. These types of options make the print driver expand the image slightly for printing. Unless you have "Scale to fit media" selected as Geoff mentioned, I think it is a printer driver issue.

Melody, have you tried opening your raw files from Bridge instead of Lightroom? This could show if the fault is with Lightroom or PS.

Also, what happens if, after applying the twirl, you save the file as a psd before opening another raw file?

Hi All,

Not quite as simple as that. I know I WANT the Extended version but at present I don't think I will take advantage of the extra features. However, this doesn't mean that at a future point (next week, next month, next year - who knows) I won't want the extra features.

In these economic times, I can't justify the disparity in price at present, but this doesn't mean I won't change my mind later if circumstances improve.

Therefore, it seems Adobe won't let me change my mind later! I don't ask for discount, just the ability to pay the difference if circumstances dictate finances aren't so tight.

Cheers

I hear ya. like i said, call and ask to be sure, but we've had a couple people point out with version cs3 and now cs4, that basically adobe has told them you'd have to sell the standard version and buy a whole new copy of the extended version. sounds pretty ridiculous to me but that's their business.

Keep that "Reset Tool" trick in the back of your mind.

It's one of the first steps in troubleshooting. There's even an entry in the FAQ section here about it:

I'm thinking of getting a DSLR camera in the summer, so (since I'm a geek) I want to make sure I've got all the software I'll need to edit the photos once I've taken them. The catch is that I graduate from university this year, so if I'm going to buy Photoshop (ie if I'm going to _afford_ Photoshop) I need to do so in the next couple of months to get the educational discount.

I've just got a few questions as to whether I actually need Photoshop CS4 for my situation:
* I already have Lightroom 2 (courtesy of Amazon Vine!) for processing RAW files, doing basic colour adjustment etc. Would I get £150 worth of extra usage from Photoshop CS4 compared to Lightroom?
* What DRM/copy protection does Photoshop CS4 use? Is it the same that's used in Lightroom 2 (hasn't given me any problems) or the Macrovision stuff that installs a background service (called something like 'Adobe LM monitor') on your computer?
* If I need to reactivate over the phone some time in the future (e.g. when I move to a new computer and I've already used the activations) do I still need to be a qualifying student?

Reckoned there wouldn't be a better place to ask these than PS forums :)

depends on what you do, but does it contain £150 worth of more stuff? definitely. and even if you don't use it immediately. with it in hand, i'll wager you FIND uses for it moving foreward as you learn the program.

the Macrovision stuff that installs a background service (called something

that's the one.

If I need to reactivate over the phone some time in the future (e.g. when

no. just at time of purchase.

Let's just get something clear here...there's a student edition and an
academic version.

I'm not sure about UK rules but in the US the student edition is highly
restricted...no commercial use and I don't even know if it can be upgraded.

The academic version costs a bit more but allows commercial use and is
upgradable.

John
I have always had 2 printers connected to my computer viz. a Canon I4500 and an Epson R1900. Photoshop recognizes both of them. However Photoshop has suddenly stopped responding to the print command for the Epson which is of course my Photoprinter and the one I primarily need to print photographs. I have just sucessfully made a print with the Canon but the minute I change the printer setting to Epson Photoshop locks out. What can possibly have happened to make Photoshop fall out with Epson?

Can't imagine. Is the Epson the default?

You could try making a generic printer the default.

Did the drivers get updated by any chance?

From: Malcolm_Gibbon@adobeforums.com

I have tried swapping the default printer - it makes no difference. I don't think it is the Epson printer driver that is the problem as the printer responds to commands from other software eg. Serif. It is only Photoshop that is giving me grief.

remove the printers from the system (uninstall) and install a default generic printer driver. john, what's that link again?

it does sound like a problem others have experienced with some printer drivers and cs3 lagging...

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the info about nVidia's latest driver v181.22.

I installed it & was able to paint for 20-25 minutes before the gpu became disabled...a little better. I've been able to paint for 20 min before, but I think I had to disable physX or change some setting, so maybe the latest driver isn't really an improvement.

Well, hopefully Photoshop CS4 will be useable sometime this year.

Phos, a million thank yous for the detailed steps.

However... I've done and re-done them six times and there's some step I must be missing. What I wind up with, to use your example above (which is precisely the effect I'm wanting), is the silhouette with the white letters "cut into" the black figure, but no black letters outside the silhouette. It's the same effect I would have achieved if I had simply made all my text white. I've already screamed at the cat and the two dogs... they are all hiding now.

I'm trying to make my layers panel look like yours. Is my type still type or have I rasterized it before I create the Invert Adjustment layer? Clearly you have not rasterized your type, because the layer icon shows a big "T."

The topmost layer in the list on yours shows the silhouette of the figure... When I follow your instruction to create an Invert Adjustment layer above the text, what shows up in the new layer is the type selection bounding box, not my silhouette.

What am I missing?

I'm probably the one who forgot to include an important step.

When you follow the step for making a selection (CTRL + Click) you need to do this on the icon in the Layer for your silhouette. It sounds to me like you CTRL + Clicked on your type layer, and made a selection out of the text.

If you want to, you can send me a ZIP-compressed copy of your Photoshop file, with all the layers intact just the way you have them now. I'll make the necessary changes and send it back. Then, you can study the differences between them.

If you need accented characters on a regular basis you might want to set your keyboard to US International. This makes accents 'dead keys'.
If such dead key is followed by a vowel you get á, ë, ç, Ú etc... very easily.

I just replied to you in another post that a strange side of being a
liberal is vigorous defense of freedom of expression EXCEPT when the
other person doesn't agree with the Liberal view of the world.

Then there's the strange circularity of political ideology where as
one moves Left, eventually you get to Socialism, Marxism, and
Communism but then the ideology wraps around and re-enters from the
far right as Facsism and back to the left again as reactionary,
neocon, and so on. I think the idea SHOULD be to stay somewhere just
left or just right of center and not get so sidetracked as to be
either a Far Left OR a Far Right Loon.

And vice versa. For a given equipment, a skilled operator will
usually produce better results than someone less skilled. The two
are equally universal truths. It's when some people harp on just
one to the exclusion of the other that it becomes misleading. For
example, when someone makes an unqualified statement that no one
needs a DSLR because content trumps quality every time, or that a
P&S can never be good enough for someone with a half-serious
interest in photography.

The clue is in the original claim, that it's "visible at the
bottom". That's what happens with a wide enough angle lens with a hood
on used with a pop-up flash. It's not the actual hood that's visible,
it's its shadow. That's one of the reasons the lens hood is made to be
detachable :-)

It's obvious that to you "RAW converter" means "RAW converter +
full blown image editor (like Photoshop)". It's just as obvious
that UFRAW is a RAW converter without any image editor bolted on.

It's really funny to see you claim things that UFRAW *must*
do or have. Imagine a camera set to only output RAW --- and
someone claiming that it's worthless, since it does output RAW
instead of JPEG, because RAW needs further image editing steps
where JPEG is already a final product.

The whole 'non-destructive editing' argument is a red herring as
it's got nothing at all to do with the choice between pure RAW
converter + separate image editor or do-everything-and-clean-the-
kitchen-too-RAW-converter.

Once to generate previews. And once again when doing
production editing.

No it doesn't. Regardless, "non-destructive editing" is
eye-candy that has very little real value.

Photoshop and Lightroom do not do all of that
independently any more than UFRAW and GIMP do. I didn't
bother to look up Aperture, and assume you don't know
any more about it than the others?

then explain how you can go back and make an adjustment to the raw
conversion after you make some changes in the editor, such as
retouching out a skin blemish or applying a lens distortion correction
filter, without losing any of those changes.

it has a *lot* of value. i can't imagine working any other way. have

you said that you don't use camera raw which means you don't use
photoshop or lightroom. how is it that you know what they can or
cannot do?

it's possible to interactively batch edit, non-destructively edit and
generate intermediate files (not needed but still possible), which you
said can't be done if the raw converter is part of the app.

you're quick to make (incorrect) assumptions.

As for converting color photos to B&W, I use Irfanview almost
exclusively. One can use either "Convert to grayscale" or
desaturating with "Color corrections" (Shift + G). Results
produced by the two methods look the same, but whereas the
greyscale picture is 8-bit (256 shades), the second one is still
technically 24-bit (16.7 million). The ratio of resultant file
sizes in uncompressed format is 1:3.

In that general direction but much sharper. The question was not so much
how to desaturate but to create mood. And I do know about some plug-ins
to create fog but not mist. But I want to know about how to expose for
this and what to do after.

Your recommended CamStudio seems fine for what I need.
It's much simpler to use than Wink, for example.

I just checked the option to record audio and then hit the record button.
When done, I hit the stop button and it automatically saves to an AVI.
I kind'a wish it would save to an AVI as it was recording so I wonder when
it will run out of memory, but that will take time to ascertain.

Once it's an AVI file, I can edit to my heart's content (not) and then
convert to DVD-video format with DVDFlick freeware and burn to DVD media
with ImgBurn freeware.

Thanks for the great suggestion. I'll try to summarize separately for

There's always comprimises. What if that prize winning opportunity
would best be captured at 200mm but you had your 16-85 on?

That depends if you want to shoot sports or nature etc. But if you should
mostly street and landscapes you will catch your shot with the 16-85 on an
APC sensor body (24-122) and you would have time to change lenses if you
feel you need to.

Here you're rationalizing. If you shoot mostly street and landscapes
then the 16-85 is also the wrong lens for you. And you're not going
to get that "prize winning" opportunity shooting streets and
landscapes that have been shot a million times before by everyone else
with a digital camera.

We're discussing do-it-all walkaround travel lenses and having a
prize-winning opportunity happen upon you. You don't know what you'll
be shooting or what it is and it's certainly within the realm of
possibilities that this once in a lifetime shot will be captured much
better at 200mm than 85mm and that if you're fumbling around changing
lenses, you'll miss it.

BTW, since you seem to like Ken Rockwell (and I'll admit he does have
some valuable info on his site) you might be interested in what he has
to say about the 16-85 vs. 18-200.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/16-85mm-vs-18-200mm.htm

The basic conclusion is that if you're shooting test charts and brick
walls or are going to print your shot at 20x30, the 16-85 would be
better. But for real world photography, it's not worth the extra cost
considering the loss of the long end.

For me, I was considering the 16-85 only because in certain situations
it has less CA than the 18-200. But that wasn't enough reason for me
to sell the 18-200 and get the 16-85. Espcially since CA is
correctable if you have that prize winning shot and newer bodies even
do it automatically.

: See http://bythom.com/lensacronyms.htm which not only has a very
: detailed compatibility matrix for the what but also excellent

:
: BTW: you could have found out easily yourself by looking into the manual

: The lens is at least AI-P (designed after ~1989), so it is fully
: compatible, unless the camera is a D40/40x/60 which would require an
: AF-S for auto-focus, but which lens even is.

The gibbericity of that answer fully justifies the original question.

You might save some money and get equal or better optical performance from
the Sigma 18-200.
I have only me extensive personal experience with these lenses to go by, not
what I've read . . .

How long do you goobers think it will take before Adobe fixes the trial

Thank Frank for the information. I guess I will want to keep my battery
in my camera.
