Those last two are of major interest. however, NEC is going out of the monitor business, for the most part.
The geometry on the Mitsubishis never gave me problems.

Chris, Lawrence,
Thanks. I'll research those products. (I've never even heard of Eizo or LaCie!) Just curious but, what do you use for printers, scanners, computer, software, etc?

David,
an LCD monitor that can be set at 100-120 cd/M2 and have a legible brightness.
I thought the problem was in my model of lcd monitor. If they're all pretty
much the same, how can you calibrate one to 100-120 cd/m2 and have it
legible? Sounds like you can't!
All LCDs can be calibrated to 120 cd/m2, yours too. Your problem is that the Spyder3pro won't do it, but other calibrators can. In your other thread I mentioned Color Eyes Display Pro, which will work with your Spyder3 puck, and which lets you specify luminance.

Thanks Freeagent. I got the impression in the course of the thread that I could get my monitor to 100-120 cd/m2 but that in order to do so it would lose all its Brightness (i.e., it would have to be set close to zero). Did I misread that?

@ David - Yeah, it will be around 0%, I guess try it an see, it may take a while to get used to if you achieve <120cd/m2 but most LCDs are way too bright for photographic work as they are designed primarily for games, general stuff - However, I hope you are sitting down when you see the Eizo prices.....The clincher for me was the deep/dark colour as some of my images rely on very subtle variations in dark tone. I recommend you have a look at the monitors with one of your images so you can see the difference - you will be amazed by the shadow detail in the Nec/LeCie/Eizo over the dells.
However, Dellas are not a disaster, if you work in a bright environment then you might get away with a higher cd/m2 - I have a controlled lighting computer environment so I don't have to recalibrate every 3 hours as the sun moves around the earth ( that was, sort of, a joke )...I like the light consistent.
For my main output I go to a print house for Lambda Digital prints....but for soft proofing I have my trusty Epson 3800 ( A2 ) - it will go up to 16 x 37ins. The print quality is the really exceptional and I highly recommend it....The running cost is around £380 for a full set of inks but you'll get a lot out of the cartridges - even at A2. When I was proofing ideas to clients last year at A2 I managed to output around 90( give or take a few )high quality prints on the inks provided with the printer. Not bad at all!!
Scanner is a Epson A4 4870 which is OK but I will upgrade to a A3 later this year when I find one with a high resolution.

Thanks. I'm afraid all efforts have proved fruitless. I have uninstalled from Control Panel and Driver Swept and the Catalyst Manager no longer shows in the list of installed programs. But I still can't instal 9.3 - indeed I cannot now install any ATI or Gigabyte/ATI driver - the process gets stuck on Analyze - Detecting Graphics Hardware..". This then freezes the computer and I have shut the power off and start again.
Strangely, when I reboot, an ATI driver (8.501.0.0) is present and I can see the display normally. ATI Catalyst Manager isn't (of course because I haven't been able to reinstall it). If the software is not seeing the hardware then that's a pretty dire situation.
I have a load of work to do now but when it's done I'll reformat and reinstall - looks like the only answer.

In previous versions of PS there was a similar-sounding problem that Adobe fixed by something called the 'adjusted refresh plug-in'.
Don't know if that applies to CS3.
Also, have you increased the 'number of history states' setting in the CS3 performance preferences? IIRC, history states can eat up RAM before changes are made, as PS reserves memory in advance for them.

I had a friend who bought Windows XP (to downgrade his Vista) from a private seller on Amazon. Yes, it was a counterfeit. I suggested he file a complaint through Amazon because even though it's a private seller, it is sold under the aegis of Amazon.
He has so filed. It's in process. I suggest that anybody stuck with such goods file a complaint. As to eBay, I bought an iPod for my daughter. It was perfectly functional but a Chinese rip off of Apples intellectual property which offended me. I demanded a return from the seller who refused. I filed through PayPal based ONLY that it violated Apples property rights - because it did work.
PayPal did a full refund over the frantic objections of the seller.

Wow...what an interesting story Paul. Thanks for sharing it with us. These are great ideas and I'm impressed that you did the right thing. I've personally vowed to try to absolutely avoid all Chinese imported food (toxic), all cheap dollar store items (99% imported from China and 98% non-functional or toxic) and really try hard to minimize valid purchases of made-in-China merchandise until they learn to control their illegal activities, reduce corruption and comply with international copyright and patent guidelines, not to mention free-up their currency so it floats freely with the other world currencies.
Sorry, didn't mean for this thread to become political but it's just not right how much that country gets away with and how much revenue they divert from U.S. companies with activities like these.

I've been using Lightroom and PS CS3 for a couple of years with no problems.
I've just updated to CS4 and now when I send a photo from LR to PS it always looks too light. I find to get LR and PS looking similar I have to apply an exposure adjustment mask with a gamma correct of 0.86 in PS??
I'm using;
Vista Ultimate 32bit
Photoshop CS4 v11.0.1
Lightroom v2.3
Camera Raw 5.3
Nvidia 9600GT (1GB memory)
My monitors are calibrated and profiled using GretagMacBeth Profile maker 5.05 and an Eye One Pro, the profiles have been applied as system profiles so Vista loads them correctly.
This issue has only come into being since installing CS4. Has anyone else seen this and if so do you have a fix?
Regards
James

This is a simple question, but....
How do I save an image so that it is rotated away from straight up and down. I want to put images on a website at about 45 degree angles, but I can't remember (or find) how to do it. I can rotate it image, of course, but whenever I try to save it, it comes back straight up and down.

Just got the RAW update for my Canon SX1 IS.
Neither Bridge CS4 nor PhotoShop CS4 (both fully updated) recognise the format despite CR2 being listed in the Bridge file associations for PhotoShop CS4.
In Bridge I just get a file icon.
In PhotoShop I get a 'file type not recognised' type of message.
Must I use Canon Digital Photo Profession to convert to TIF for processing in Adobe Camera Raw, or am I missing something?

I'm having trouble trying to get the Patch tool selection to rotate (ie 30,40 50 degrees or whatever) to better match the destination.
I've made it work a couple of times by using Free Transform but most of the time it chops a hole in the image, when all I want to do is copy and drag the source area without leaving gaps in the matrix.
Anyone?
Thanks......

Subject: [Photoshop-Haven] Organizing Brushes
Can someone give me a hint as to the best way to view & sort brushes?
And maybe a dumbed down version of how PS uses them? (saving sets etc)
I have always left the preset alone (assumed overloading it would slow things down) and then as I work, I load whatever brushes I want to use, then occasionally clear the list as it gets too crowded.
That's been fine until now, I've gotten into digital scrapbooking and have gotten TONS of fun brushes that I can't wait to use, but I guess I have also gotten a bit ahead of myself, cause now I'm not sure which brush set is what and if I like them or even need them? My favorite go-to brushes are even getting lost in the mix.
Is there a way to easily view what's in a brush set and maybe rename it so I know what I've got and will be able to find it when I need it?
I suspect I may be going about this the wrong way and would greatly appreciate any tips or information.
Thanks in advance.
