[Photoshop-Haven] How can I convert values to colors?

With the color replacement brush, it is easy to replace one color with another, keeping the original values.

What I would like to be able to do is to color an image based on value ranges.

For example, I might want the highlights to be expressed as yellow, the mid-tones as red, and the shadows as blue.

I might want to retain the original values, or perhaps not. I might want to blend the colors to express in-between values.

Any suggestions or related tutorials?
