[photoshop-beginners] How does the contrast slider work?

I have CS3.

If I select "Brightness/Contrast" and I click the "Legacy" checkbox,
the Contrast slider gives me a wide range of control (just like the old
PSE contrast slider did).

Without "Legacy" checked, the contrast slider does not appear to do
anything. Am I missing something?
