I've been away. Thanks John, Bart and Buko for your responses. Think you misunderstood my post Bart, but it does not matter now. John got the correct message. Buko: of course CS3 cannot use ACR 5.x - that was implicit in my post.

I can't remember just what setting is causing the problem, but having installed PS CS4, my brush cursor can be as big as possible or as small as poaaible and all I see is a small x regardless. I checked the preferences for cursors and they appear correct. Any thoughts? It also appears that my settings for CS3 were affected as well.

Thanks for your comments Freeagent, I know about the 50% / 100% thing, but there is a noticeable difference in sharpness when OpenGL is on. When OpenGL is off the pictures look sharper. When OPenGL is on, its a real pain when you want to view the whole picture of a large file on the screen and it looks out of focus.

Could you post screenshots with and without OGL, but at same zoom percentage? Pixentral will do fine.

There will be a visible difference in sharpness - question is how much.

OK here they are..

I'm getting those as 800x640 jpegs, which doesn't tell me much.

Hit "print screen" and paste the entire thing into a new photoshop document. Then flatten it and save it as PNG-24. This will be a screenshot of your actual screen pixels.

Go to Pixentral.com and upload it. Just follow the instructions. Place the cursor in the "html" field, ctrl+a and copy, and then paste that into your post. This will produce a clickable thumbnail here.

Hi,
I just tried to update to 11.01. PS was open the first time, but was closed after the download started the second time. Only my email app-Eudora was open both times.

What now?

Thanks,

Did you use the updater in PS?

Go to adobe.com > downloads > updates and pick up the .zip file. Save it and unzip it, and in the resulting folder is, among other things, a Setup.exe. Run that.

I've been having the same problem, tried it via the CS4 updater and via download then install. Each time I just get the mesaage "update failed to install"

this is the sum of 6 attempts, yesterday evening and today, fresh installs each time (after wiping the previous attempt)

My CS4 updater no longer shows an update available but is also still showing that I still have v11.0

Mogur203 - What error message are you observing and on which operating system ? Close Photoshop while downloading and then try to install again.

Also confirm if updates posted on Adobe.com > downloads > updates work for you.

And what is even more of a bore is when the others offer opinions on what they think is the right thing to do for an audience that they know nothing about. Sort of like the advice you get from a grumpy old man.

I was on Lynda.com, "brushing" up on Photoshop CS4's 3D capabilities when I found myself staring for nearly an hour at Chad Perkins demonstrating how to use various tools using an incomplete cursor. Never a mention, he just plowed on. It was painful. But I guess, the folks at Lynda.com haven't got the word to upgrade their GPU's. Or they have given up...

Chris, if any of your comrades want to see the incomplete cursor in action, Lynda.com Photoshop 3D is a good show.

This is plain great Ron. Maybe sometime the word gets out about this new feature of CS4. 179 replies in this topic and still only workarounds... Also the recent update to Photoshop did not address this issue at all.

Oh wait the word actually has gotten out, read about it here:

Seems like I'm getting some conflicting info from people. Hope i didn't resurrect a sore subject!!!!

The files we work with are raw files from a D700 Nikon and can be anywhere in size from 12mb - 60mb depending on the number of layers, amount of detail etc...

We're probably in area where opinion and taste matters more than fact :-)

As JJ pointed out, the really important thing is to have OS and scratch on different drives. How you configure the scratch drive is probably not all that critical.

I have, I guess mostly for aesthetic reasons B-) , a 100 GB scratch partition and the rest of that drive for image files before they go to external backup.

TOPIC: "Arrange Documents" panel plugin bug - Please Adobe give technical

Hi,

A lot of users are hit by this bug that appears when installing certain
plugins under CS4 (Nik Software plugins for example):

- the menu bar buttons that should be highlighted in color when hovering
them switch to a full grey area.
- the 2 top Panels in the Arrange Documents drop down menu are
invisible.

Adobe say this is a problem with older plugins and a misunderstanding
about how resources are managed in plugins (read : it's a developer
mistake) and plugin vendors don't make any firm statement about this
issue.

The workaround that generally works is to close and reload the plugin
but this works only for the current session.

It would be nice if Adobe could give us users clear and detailed
technical information about this issue. Many of us are developers or
power users and since the communication between the plugin vendors and
Adobe doesn't seem to be that effective, at least we would be able to
transmit the information to the vendor's technical support ourselves.
And as a developer, I'd like to know what mistake so many developers
have made when using the CS4 SDK.

It's very annoying to live with such trivial problems since months
without seeing any fix released.
