I think the main question is, "is it legal"? so far the answer from customer service is a resounding "NO" even though jack nack said that they would be adjusting the marketing to make it legal...

is it possible to unlock it? of course. one can even get versions that are pre-unlocked, if one doesn't feel conflicted, especially if you've paid for it anyway. i think the real question is when is it going to become adobe policy?

Buko...I just did what you suggested. However, there is a comment on the blog from Nov 13 that seems to explain what Rilla is talking about. Still, it seems that Adobe is making it awfully tough to make this upgrade-downgrade. I may just go with CS4 Extended and hope that they get the message by the next release and enable a CS4 Extended to Cs5 non-extended upgrade....I guess that concedes defeat though

Ah, I understand Rilla. The problem is though, that you shouldn't have to jump through hoops. And what happens if you have a problem with your computer or the software and have to reinstall (as happened several times to me with CS3...for some reason I still can't get CS3 Bridge to work properly and so use Lightroom and Cs2 Bridge. Will the same unlock code work time and again? If you have to call customer service for a problem and you tell them how you installed, will they all agree that what was done was proper, or will they say the problem is an illegal install.

I think that if they are going to offer a CS3 Extended to CS4 Non-extended upgrade (as they darn well should) I believe the policy should be clear and transparent, available to all, and not one where you have to make support calls and jump through hoops to get it done (I'm not even home during the day to do it over the phone with them). There should be a simple and straightforward and publically obvious way....it should be obvious how to do so from their web site. For heaven's sake, if they can do it with an unlock code then it shoudl be clearly advertised and there should be a simple way to e-mail them your serial number/registration and have an instantaneous unlock code with easy instructions sent back to you. It is hard for me to believe that their marketing department had no inkling that this could be a problem.

Is it legal? From CS3 ext to CS4 non ext, Yes. From the CS2 that you used to upgrade to CS3 (CS2 to CS4) I'm not entirely sure. But from your CS3 to CS4 it will be ok. Call Tech Support (Not customer Service) from M-F 6a – 5p at 800-642-3623. Tell them you need an unlocking.

The activation code will work only once. I believe the code also expires within an hour or so. From what I understand the number that you call Adobe with is a unique ID that is for your machine only.

You will need an unlock each time you want to install the software.

As for the in writing thing… Well… Call tech support and ask. Just say you need to be unlocked, have your serials and the activation code. They will see the upgrade path CS3 ext to CS4 and unlock it for you.

What is this? You talk as if your word is good enough, that this is true because you say it is.

We want more than that.

It would have been nice if it were that simple, but the truth is that
most of the cards people have problems with are actually on that list.

at least according to what we've seen here. we've also seen several people solve their issues by reformatting, which leads us to think there may be something on the system causing a conflict.

Your both right. Reformatting solves most issues :p . I just try to use it as an extreme last resort.

So it is. But sometimes, a man has to do what a man has to do.

Everyone resists reformatting but in a way it's like having a hot shower, towelling down vigorously and putting on a fresh, clean set of clothes.

You feel much better for it.

I absolutely agree. I have a server in my home and backup all my pcs to it once a month so. I also have all my installed programs stored on my server. To people like you and I formatting isn't detrimental, Just a mere half a day inconvenience. Through my years of support I have learned that people like you and I are not as common as we sometimes think. If a basic user had to format, it may take days or weeks for them to get everything back. I only recommend formatting as a last resort.

When you read the release notes the 8.11 release mentions nothing about adobe opengl fixes.

<https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2.ati.com/gamesite/Catalyst_811_release_notes.pdf>

But there are other interesting items to read about if you wish to do so. :)

I'm not sure. It happened to me several times over the last couple of months and then it recently happened to a colleague at work. I "think" is said something about "Refer to color settings information..." but I really need to look at it, the next time it happens, and write down exactly what it says. It allowed full use of the color settings window, it just didn't give any indication whether other programs were in or out of sync with each other.

Well, my color settings are deliberately unsynchronized across the suite, but the pie is there - with one slice jutting out.

Maybe you settings are really, really unsynchronized... (just kidding).

And what would you gain by waiting? You can still use CS3 anytime you
want and you now have CS4 for those things that do work for you.

In short, for anyone who's going to upgrade at some point there is no
reason at all to wait.

I've found that option. And what happens when I change it is the following.
The secondary adapter is now used as boot device ( it's the 8400GS ). Photoshop recognizes the 8800 GT as primary graphic adapter ( attention the 8400GS was set to primary and was used while booting ).
Now some other applications crash getting the weak 8400 as primary.

To show you in detail here some screens.
At first a mainboard overview where you can see the position of the pci ports.

<http://img201.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mainboardlayoutrn1.jpg>

The next picture shows how they are connected physically. The 8800GT in PCEIX 16 (1 ) - the upper port, the 8400GS in the lower 2nd.

So you agree that they are plugged in properly.

<http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=realmainboardeu9.jpg>

The next picture shows you the display properties and PS Performance Dialog when the 8800GT is the primary boot device ( so bios dialog and windows bootscreen is shown on the 8800GT.

<http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=primarysettobootyk7.jpg>

And the last picture shows what happens when the secondary 8400GS is set to primary boot device.
PS now recognizes the 8800GT as primary but it is secondary. Bios dialog and windows bootscreen where shown on the 8400GS.

<http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=secondarysettobootkd9.jpg>

In this configuration some apps cause errors because of the low specs of the 8400GT primary.

I have here also some other apps running ( f.e. Autodesk 3dsmax ). They recognize the cards correct. I've never had any problems until PS4Extended.

So any additional ideas what I can do?

One thing I notice from your screenshots is you apparently haven't installed the monitor driver for #1 (since it just says Standard plug'n'play).

But I have no idea if that makes any difference. Just shooting from the hip.

I to have this CURSOR BUG, what a pain. Nvidia 7950GX2. I have tried up dating (178.24) and end up with artifacts on the screen. You cannot manage without a cursor size, so have resorted to my old copy of CS3 and wind the computer back to a previous date. Adobe take note what a shame for users like me to not be able to use the new stuff.
Why not work with Nvidia and sort the problem out??? I have been unable to complain to them, as their site is not user friendly, and I think it would be easier to contact the Mars probe. PLEASE HELP. Vic

I'm having a problem with Photoshop CS3 10.0.1. Here's what I did:

1. I created an image - 6x4 inches, 600 dpi.
2. Created a new layer, and filled it with black.
3. I ran the Add Noise filter - 15%, Gaussian, Monochromatic.
4. I added a Curves Adjustment Layer. I set the dark end point to 0/49 (Out/In), and added another point at 98/60 (Out/In).

This now looks the way I want it to. However, if I try to merge the Curves layer with the noise layer, the end result changes drastically. The same thing happens if I try to Flatten Visible, Flatten All, or create a Layer Stamp. It even happens when I apply the Curves directly, instead of as an adjustment layer.

If I try to work with the original background layer without creating a new layer first, it seems to work fine when I merge the Curves layer with it. But if I duplicate the layer, I get the same problem.

I can't get this to change into a single layer without changing. What the heck is going on?

I am using Photoshop CS4 on a 32bit vista Q6600. When I installed CS4, I had a graphics card based on a 8600GS. Photoshop run fine, even in openGL.

Not I upgraded the graphics card to a 9600GT for better performance. CS4 still starts, but when a photo is loaded, the photo appears correctly in the navigator, but the main window where the photo usually appeared remains grey, as the background. When moving around this window, the photo appear, but as soon as I release the mouse button, the window turn grey again...

When I deactivate openGL in CS4, everything seems to work.

I am having the latest NVidia drivers installed 178.24 (with both graphics cards).

I tried to reinstall the driver, no change.
I tried to reinstall CS4, no change.

Anyway of getting CS4 work in openGL with this 9600GT?

I probably found the problem. The new graphics card from ASUS installed GamerOSD and ASUSSmartDoctor. I deinstalled these and now openGL is working again in CS4. I guess these ASUS tools do install some additional DLLs...

The problem has been discussed several times in the forum.

You need to remove all third party plug-ins. If this cures the problem, replace them one by one till you find the incompatible one.

If this doesn't help "Update your video card drivers".

Rilla: The preferences mysteriously fixed themselves upon restart, so that's no longer an issue. I did try clearing them just for kicks, to no effect.

PNY's website gives me version 96.85 for the FX5200, as that's the last version that "officially" support this card. Theoretically, new drivers are supposed to support all cards, what with the unified driver architecture business, but I dunno.

malojo: Hmmm... you know, I did see your thread before, but somehow it didn't register in my head that I might have the same problem. However, I cannot physically swap my cards, as the 8800GT uses PCI-E while the FX5200 uses regular PCI. I'm interested though, what's your status now?
