But it installs as the non ext version and the splash screen doesn't have
extended on it either. When I get my serial number will it then say it is
the extended version.

Hi all,

Currently I have Photoshop CS4 installed and working well on my Windows XP system.
Would installing other, but older (CS3) apps such as Illustrator or Dreamweaver interfere with this setup or might it break things? I suppose Photoshop CS4 itself would not be affected, but how about Bridge and other behind-the-scenes interop things?
I'd hate to find out afterwards things like color management would be broken or inconsistent...

That list is as much use as tits on a bull. :(

At best it is a guide only – some cards on the list don't work for some people, others not on the list, will work.

The cards have been tested by Adobe and worked for them, but there are too many variables; like driver version, card settings, OS settings, and PS settings.

I don't think Adobe realised what they were getting into.

Having said that, I think it's the best upgrade since they introduced layers and I'm loving it! :)

Here's what I would do if I had these problems:

1. Reformat and clean Windows install.
2. Install chipset drivers.
3. Install latest graphic driver.
Leave EVERYTHING else for later.
4. Install Photoshop/Creative Suite.

Have anyone tried that?

(should that be has BTW? constantly confused by these little things, not being native English-speaking...)

Anyway, it was not a rhetorical question, I'm really curious. It should separate video card problems from system conflicts.

Freeagent,

I had to nuke my system a while back to get CS4 to load correctly. The installer stopped 3/4 the way through. CS4 has registry entries that cannot be deleted. At the time I installed CS4 there was no un-installer to wipe out the registry entries that are locked in the registry. So I was screwed.

Some of my steps are like yours but I did some other steps in between that I do from past experience.

1. Did a fresh install with Vista ultimate 64 bit "with" service pack one.

2. Accomplished all the other updates that microsoft showed on auto update plus cheked "recommended updates" and checked "use microsoft update" to receive other software updates for things like your motherboard.

3. Defragged hard drive and turned on windows installer to automatic in services.

4. Downloaded directx package and installed. (This does not update by microsoft updates).

5. Had to download and install .net because ATI CCC uses it to run.

6. Went to ATI website and downloaded and installed 8.10 drivers (that was the ones shown when I updated)

7. Rebooted then defragged. Turned off windows defender and the firewall.

8. Installed CS registered and rebooted (I was updating to CS4 extended from that)

9. Defragged

10. Installed CS4 extended upgrade then registered and rebooted

11. After reboot turned on firewall and defragged again

12. Then installed and updated the remaining software and drivers.

This may seem a lot to do but most of the steps are found in the adobe help area for installing.

So it took me like 4 hours to re-do everything.

A un-installer like CS3 had would have been nice at the time of the CS4 release.

Hope this helps people.

Windows XP Pro 32 bit, 2GB memory. Saphire 1950 Pro video card.

Cleaned out the dust already. Plenty of ventilation. Tried with anti-virus turned off - no go. I'll try the rootkit check and registry cleaner. Thanks.

Thanks Jim. My hesitation was not with GIMP per se, it was with any 'downloaded' program, as I have had bad luck in the past.

One last question: Will GIMP cooperate with my Adobe Photodeluxe and let me transfer an existing file from AP over to GIMP to work with it?

The question should be: can Gimp open files saved with Photodeluxe?

The answer depends on what formats Photodeluxe uses to save files.

Stone tablets? Papyrus scrolls? JPG? PSD?

You tell us!

Jpeg does not support transparency. The only function of the matte color,
in the case of jpeg, is to specify the color of the transparent portions of
the image.

I recommend png if your goal is a good quality transparent image for web
use. Gif is a jaggy second best.

I'm up to a 180.44 on 8800M GTX with no resolution to problem. Nvidia gave me the same "no known issue."

Dell laptop users are hurting here because, we must rely on 3rd party driver modders to get the "latest drivers." Since Nvidia won't release mobile versions directly for Dell machines, we must rely on Dell. The last Dell driver for the M1730 laptop with an 8800M GTX SLI was in February. The 8700M SLI driver is over a year old now.

So, I if Adobe can't help us, as F Sansom suggested, we may be waiting for the 12th of Never to get this reslolved.

Hello,
so this is really bad, I have installed my CS4 yesterday and discovered the brush cursor problem - ok I have installed newest driver for my ASUS 8800 GTS and - yeah, cursor is OK- BUT --> all of my OTF fonts stoped working - this is another problem that I have googled earlier - not only my problem. I must use older drivers or my OTF fonts not work. So - What now?

Sorry but after all those serious problems, why ADOBE not try to cooperate with Nvidia when they are making their new software, or just chek it before release?

Opened the myFile.psd file to continue edits from yesterday.
All layers are still visible, but when I attempt to use the History Brush Tool to continue editing the layer to paint over the image, nothing happens. It all was working yesterday.

Since I am new to Photoshop I was unsure if there was some default setting that needs to be changed.

This is the trial version of CS4.

Hi John. Thanks for the post. Actually though, when the color settings are out of sync the top right segment of the register mark "pie" juts out and the "unsyncronized" info comes up. What I'm referring to is that, at random times, there is no color register mark at the top left of the color settings dialog window and in its place is just a gray circle (almost like a talk balloon in the comics) and there is a black exclamation point in it. Usually, on by system everythng displays correctly with the color register mark that is intact when color settings are in sync and disjointed if they are out of sync, but I don't know what causes this other thing.

Thanks.

Gordon
