how much free space do you have on the drives that contain the swap file and Photoshops scratch disks?

Over 400GB free space. And a quad 6600 processor. I really don't think the machine spec is an issue here.

I also have PS CS3 running on a Dell laptop of much lower spec and I have never seen the error message on launching on that platform.

Sometimes I get message when I launch, sometimes I don't.

well, if it's the swap file, try to set it to 1gb min and max. Another thing you can try is to start the task manager(Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and select the performance tab and see if the Memory and/or the Physical Memory Usage History indicators fill up completely when you get that error

Matt,

In the Wacom control panel there may be different settings for different applications, so maybe that causes it.

Thanks Dave. Everything worked fine. It was odd that I had to build a new set in order to move the actions but to move the brushes I was just able to select them and save them. That's OK though, I got what I needed in the end. Thanks for your help

Regard,
Dennis

Thanks, Mylenium. I had our IT guy look at your post, because I didn't know what some of it meant. I had tried one different driver, but IT guy found another one that has improved the situation. I may yet get everything I need for tonight printed in time!

Yesterday suddenly Photoshop got all sluggish again, I turned off OpenGL and then Photoshop works fine again. Nothing has changed since I last updated the driver, no updates of any sort, anyone have an idea why this could happen?

You could just try to copy the Photoshop folder over and see if it starts, if i remember correctly Photoshop isn't that picky about being properly installed

Hi,
I downloaded the trial version (assessment for thirty days) of Adobe Photoshop cs2. Once installed the trial version, the program works correctly, except for a basic function: to open files and modify them. Any image files (jpeg-gif-png-tiff-bmp-psd) on press command FILE>OPEN, or Ctrl+O, to open it, sends the system in crash, and without any warning message, send to "restart" the operating system, in my case , windows xp.

I use also photoshop cs, and it works correctly and allows to open file image also; but not with cs2.

What's the problem?

Systemic crashes *often* point to a hardware, or an OS problem.

You might want to open Event Viewer and take a look at both the System and the Applications tabs. What errors are you encountering? Unfortunately a lot of the error messages are very cryptic, but click on any Windows link in them, to see if they point you to something in the MS Knowledgebase.

You might also want to post your system specs and your OS setup.

Also, what happens if you drag one of these files from Windows Explorer to an open PS?

Good luck,

Hunt

Thanks - 7.0.1 installed and still the same problem.

I have narrowed things down a bit.

It seems if I create a new doc 2400x3000 for example I can convert it to a jpeg no problem.

If I start with 3600x3600 I get the problem. Same steps as the above file with the only difference being the size.

Anyone have a solution for this as it seems like it is size related (note that I have created at this size before and never had this problem).

Thanks.

Bob - did you meant this?

Search for psicon.dll and rename it psicon.dll.old. Reboot

I did mention that I tried this and nothing changed.

I think my options for just pure safety may just be to burn the project to Blu-Ray when it is ready... At least I'm guaranteed a sharp and beautiful image... but will destroy my already empty wallet... and my consumers. What I would like to ask you... is that right now, for viewing purposes,to see if this works... is I have saved my PS files (1920 by 1080 72dpi) in a TIFF format and want to burn to a DVD... When I did... the files were unreadable when I tried to play them back... I burned on a Nero DVD software... at best compression... TIFF seems to be the best way to acheive and keep all that data... What am I doing wrong now? How can a DVD player read TIFF files anyway... or can they. I just want to try this technique and see what results I can get... My friend burns his photographs (not paintings) on a DVD with Nero for wide screen viewing and has no problem... saved in JPG... But considering mine is artwork - wouldn't TIFF be my best option... and then how to save to a DVD for viewing?

THANKS for your help!!

What is "scene referred rendering composition", and how do I recognize
it?

If you click on the advanced settings of the Color Settings dialog in Photoshop CS4,then go down to the Conversion Options section,it's the third checkbox down. Run your cursor over it to see a description in the bottom section of color settings.

THANKS GENER!!! Unticking that box did the trick :)

I'm going to to have to go away and read lots more about colour profiles but at least in the mean time images look like they do in LR. This means I can now get back to using PS to make advanced tweaks to my images.

And thanks to everyone who kept this thread alive long enough for me to get an answer.

Best regards

James

Does anybody know the logic behind the fact that PS7 users can't upgrade to CS4? I can't believe that Adobe doesn't have the IT knowledge to enable CS4 to be backwards compatible. One person suggested that I upgrade to CS2 or CS3 and then upgrade again to CS4. That will, of course, save me some money, but why on earth should I have to do that - it's still expensive? I think we all know the answer to that!!

Could I remind Adobe that we are in a "credit crunch" and that perhaps if their software was cheaper they might sell more. Or is that perhaps too logical?

Pam

Pamela it's not a lack of IT knowledge to enable CS4 to be backwards compatible.

It's hard-nosed commercial exploitation of a captive user base by the Adobe bean counters.
