Thanks for all the tips!
I did try them all, shaking, cleaning, resetting. All to no avail. I'm going to head out and buy another light magenta and change it out to see if that makes a difference. . . .
Thanks again!

This is sort of academic question. When using ProPhotoRGB as working space, Photoshop´s color picker calculates R=0, G=0, B=255 (pure, unprintable blue) and the Lab colorspace is corresponding with L=0,a=90, b=-128. Most confusing is the L-value "0". Zero L(uminance) means black, absolutly black.
I checked other working spaces and none of them behaves like ProPhotoRGB.
Could someone clarify this?

Those L*ab readings will change depending on your working CMYK space.
Try converting to different CMYK spaces and see what happens

That does sound like a bug to me, although Photoshop has long be inconsistent in how it has dealt with colors spec'd outside the range of L*a*b or that of human vision.
Changing your CMYK space only changes the mix of CMYK in the Color Picker. The L*a*b values stay the same. The OP is concerned with how a ProPhoto 255 blue translates to L*a*b, a conversion that is independent of CMYK altogether. I get those same values when I fill a document with 255 blue and convert to L*a*b. It's clearly not a zero Luminance.

Hi
I have an image that we want to use as a cover of a book.
The image is a scanned photo. The person who scanned it was a bit brain dead when she did it and scanned it in low res. The biggest size we have for this image is around 800kb @300dpi @ 1.5" x 2.7".
We need to use it for the cover of our Cookbook which is a 7" x 7 1/2 " bleed, or not...also we can use a frame around it.
HELP!
The layout artist says we cannot add pixels in PSCS3 to make it meet the 300dpi 150 line minimum.
As soon as we double it, of course the quality gets diminished.
He said using something "creative" within the PS filters might work. Alien Skin might work, but his trial subscription is finished.
Please, what can you tell me?.
If we could use any other pix for the cover, we would, but so far, not possible.
What would be the biggest size we could go for?
What extra programs or filters can we use to "build-up" this image to usable size?
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

The obvious question is, can you rescan it?
I haven't done the math (you should think in terms of pixel dimensions, not inches) but I doubt there is any good solution.
Omne poddibility wouod be to vectorize it using <http://vectormagic.com/home>
Some images lend themselves better to vectorizing than others. A vector image can be enlarged infinitely in Illustrator.

Why can't the image be rescanned?

Oh Sorry.
The Image DISAPPEARED! We can't locate it anywhere.
Of course logically we could rescan, if we had it.
We also cannot find anyone who has a copy of it.
So we are left with this issue.
I will send your suggestion to Jeff and see if he can do something like Vectorize it in Illustrator.
We are hoping for the best.
Any other options?

Reshoot or find a new image.
since you are scanning an image that already existed do you have permission to use it?

Yes, it's MINE!
I shot it.
I shot it for this Cookbook, and gave the negs to the editor, who gave them to the cook.... for use in the book. But unfortunately, she cannot find them, she says.
I have a copy of the photo, but it is locked away in a trunk in a storage compartment in America, and I am in India, so it won't help.
THis photo was chosen by our Teacher as the cover photo of the book, so we are trying to do the best we can to use it, that's why the scramble.

Can't reshoot.
Our teacher passed-on 12 years ago. So that idea is out.

Never ever give your original negs to anyone. only give dupes. but I guess you learned that already.
It would be best to reshoot as digital.

Best may be to apply one of the artistic filters because you just do not have enough image info for the size cover photo you want as a true photographic image.

I had a period when this problem was happening working on 1.5 to 2 gig files. I eventually found that changing the Photoshop Performance settings seemed to affect it, making the problem slightly better. Also make sure you have enough free space.

Converting to a different Color Space may always flatten by default unless you use the Edit menu/Convert … method and turn off the Check Box
It should read, converting to a different color MODE may flatten your file if the layer contents are not transferable between spaces.

Correct!
An incorrect use of "Color Space" instead of Mode by me!
I always use the Edit/Convert Profile when changing Color Mode (because of the greater choices that it offers) and it is well worth it to attach a keyboard shortcut to that menu item.

But did you install the Layouts in your Preset folder?
You will find that you have two Preset folders: one in the Applications/Photoshop folder;
and another one in your User/Library/ApplicationSupport/Adobe/Adobe PhotoshopCS4/Presets/.
You need to install the PP Layouts in a folder called "Layouts" in the former location.

Thanks for your responses!
I did purge the clipboard and that helped - in my 10 years of Photoshop use I've used the purge menu maybe 10 times so it's a good time to learn.
I think the problem is that I didn't know there could be multiple itemson the clipboard, that can be accessed separately, at any given time. I mean that I could copy and paste images inside PS all I wanted but every time I launched PS and did CMD-N there would be the mysterious 32x32 clipboard preset again. So there must have been an icon or something stuck in the clipboard for some reason.
But problem solved, new things learned! Thank you!

By the way, I found out what is causing this. If I use Finder to Copy-Paste any file with CMD-C and CMD-V instead of dragging, it causes PS to think there is an icon in the clipboard. Not nice, but at least I know what is causing it.

Ramon.
Are recommending using the none checkbox in the image compression for my tif master and archive files as a standard practice, as opposed to Chris' advise to use ZIP for both image and layer compression? Could this be explained.
Thanks again
