Ho,

I'm squarely with you on that one. If one's computer is just used for e-mail and browsing, it's not an issue. Real work, however, trumps getting the latest update, as soon as is possible. I just missed setting Java to manual. It slipped by my defenses. Won't happen again. I also hate any auto-update, that will require a reboot. Hey, I'm working here. I'll update and reboot, when I'm finished.

I also think that I need to clarify that I was only making an observation of what was happening on my system. The Java updater was not running yet, but only the "message" pop-up. Also, these two occurrances could have been purely coincidental. I was just the observer. After the prefs corruption, I did run the Java updater, and after the "trashing" of my perfs, all ran very well.

I do not want to scare people off from updating, Java, or anything. I am sorry if I was not clear. As I said, I have no idea whether the message pop-up had any effect whatsoever. It just hit at the same time. [and pissed me off, that I had not thought to properly configure it for my workflow]

Hunt

I can't figure out why I cannot see the full file list when I do File Open in CS3?

Dell T7400
NVIDIA 1700 Quadro
64-Bit Vista
8 Gigs of RAM.

See this screen capture. I can scroll down some, but not to the bottom of the list. It's driving me crazy!

All drivers are up-to-date, and it's done this since I installed it last September.

I can't tell if that's the OS open dialog or the "Adobe" open dialog.

If you are using the "Adobe" open dialog, switch back to the OS dialog.
If you are using the OS open dialog, then I don't know - because that comes entirely from the OS....

That's simply "File" "Open" from within Photoshop.

Browsing with explorer is fine. I only see this in Adobe CS3 apps. I get it in any of my Master Collection applications.

Hi Chris,

Our Designer Team is having lots of problems after we upgraded from CS2 to CS4. Some of the problems include:

- a dramatic slowdown in the system
- photoshop crashes minutes after opening and working on a CS2 document
- Internet Explorer does not display properly
- The search function in Windows does not work (you can only see the animated dog, but there are no search fields to input into)

We are running on XP Pro 64 bit.
Can CS2 and CS4 run in the same system? - the installation did not delete CS2

Please give me some advise, or send me some links that can help me tackle the problems.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know what might be affecting Explorer or the search function.

Yes, CS2 and CS4 can coexist just fine (you can install ALL previous versions of photoshop without conflict).

Have you installed the 11.0.1 dot release? Have you updated the video card drivers?

And why did you add your question to an unrelated topic?

Thanks Hunt. I'll try your suggestions when I get home tonight. (I had good luck with two other questions I asked yesterday but I'm still struggling with 'text'.)

As a total aside - and for whoever is reading this - I am amazed at the generosity of people in these forums. I have only been doing this for a few days but I am stunned (I can't think of another word) at how generous people are with information, and how friendly the tone of this forum is. (I believe you're not suppoed to pontificate on these sites but I just had to say that! I promise I won't do it again.)

Hi,

If you are having problem with your CS4 products installation you can try to change this key :

IF the value of DisableRollback is set to 1 your CS4 products will not install

Like this:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
"DisableRollback"=dword:00000001

Solution :

Set the value of DisableRollback to 0

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer]
"DisableRollback"=dword:00000000

Msg to admins it would be good to add my solution to this article: kb407428

Look, we all hate it, but it is what it is. Adobe has never said it was
intended to stop all piracy. It's intent is stop "casual piracy."

To what end?

They no doubt spent a lot of money developing the activation scheme and continue to spend more on the required customer support to deal with activation problems. These are added costs that Adobe didn't have before. In addition, the casual piracy that existed before allowed people to become familiar with their product with the chance that they would eventually become paying customers. After activation, more and more people are made aware of free software like Gimp and find that it suits them just fine. As well, more and more legitimate users are adversely affected by stumbling blocks that didn't exist before, sometimes costing them money.
If I was an Adobe shareholder I'd be pissed that they spent money on something like that. Like government spending, it's a whole lot of money flying out the door for poorly justified, as well as poor or even negative results.
What was activation meant to achieve in real measurable terms? Anyone? Bueller?

bingo.

I'd like to see the numbers for piracy before and after activation. of course those numbers don't exist because no one knows for sure.

so someone in a cubicle makes up some numbers and pops them into a spreadsheet and makes stylishly shaded pie charts out of them until it looks "good" to the dummies who spent all that time and money on the activation scheme, justifying all the stupid decisions that led them down that path, pat each other on the back and go have an imported beer.

i'm sure it's stopped 5, no 10 no wait, that doesn't cover the costs... hmm... a MILLION copies of photoshop from being pirated, so we made money from each of those MILLION people because all of those people who would have pirated photoshop went out and paid for photoshop elements.

i'm sure they didn't just go on the interwebs and download the cracked copies.

What OS are you running?
If you're running 64-bit (which is what Dell is now putting in most of their high-end machines by default), you're out of luck.

OK, that message means what it says -- the driver has a problem and Photoshop is having to shut it down. Please report that to ATI.

If Photoshop crashes when creating or opening a document, then the crash cause could be in the printer driver (which gets partly initialized when we create or open a document).

Chris - the network printer issue sounds like a problem with the printer driver. Set your default printer to something local (attached, or a PDF printer) so it won't take so long.

If Photoshop doesn't recognize the card, then something in the card's driver is saying that it is not capable of running the OpenGL APIs used by Photoshop.

Thank you for your reply but it doesn't help me at all as I have the latest video drivers for my card and when I spoke with the card's manufacturer's tech support they said that open GL is controlled by Windows so I should take the matter up with Microsoft (fat chance of getting satisfaction there).

Furthermore, I am using a PS plugin--Phototools Pro 2-- that offers a mask painting brush IF it detects open GL and it does offer me that mode so it is detecting my open GL working within PS but PS can't find it for itself as it did before its latest revision.

How can I troubleshoot this enigma?

Yes, it does. That message only appears if you have maximize compatibility turned OFF when you save the document.

What I don't understand is how you saw that, since Photoshop will open newer PSD files and preserve the layers. The only way I can think of is if they opened it in another application, or held down control-alt when opening the file (to force it to open the composite only).

Got it. You're gonna laugh.

QuickMask mode.
You were editing the quickmask, and that state is saved with the document. And when you are editing the quickmask, we don't allow depth conversions, so they're grayed out (the extra quick mask channel gunks up the works - on the list of things to fix, but hasn't been a priority).

That's why the document title says foo.psd @ 100% (Layer 0, Quick Mask/16), and the quickmask icon at the bottom of the tool palette is darkened.
