Well it IS a freebie – and the scanner manufacturers possibly prefer to unload stuff that is wasting space in their warehouses by giving it away … instead of throwing it in the dumpster.

Buy Barbara Brundage's book at B&N.
She is also the resident expert at the forum. I use 4, have very few problems, but BB has answered them instantly.

Good show, Mike. Glad the Mini is apparently running properly again. I was glad to learn of Luke's suggestion about the power brick.

Like Buko, I clean my Macs regularly. It used to be that I bought canned air to blow them out but as I take care of my own and about 30 Macs in the neighborhood I purchased a Datavac Electric Duster which puts out a fine column of air and has saved me money over the purchase price even though I've only owned it for 9 months. There are three different nozzles for different intensity, the smallest being the most power in a given area. I bought it here... the best price I found at the time (and even added a review I was so pleased).

Most folks think compressed air in a can is ideal. This method does not use an electric motor that can generate static charges that might extend down the hose. However, blowing does not really help in severe cases like this. It just stirs up the dust so that it can settle on the computer again.

If you are careful with static charge and take care not to dislodge delicate parts in the system, suck it with a vacuum.

Also...I've read from several reliable sources that it's not a bad idea to properly ground your vacuum wand/tube/nozzle...seems just the action of all that air rushing between metal and plastic can create possibly harmful static charges.

I do it...can't hurt. Sure would suck to fry a component when all you're trying to do is be a thorough and conscientious system maintainer.

Hello Folks,

I'm the original poster.

I was provided a suggestion to clean out the dust from the interior of the box. I used a friends air compressor to force blast the inside (3-4 minutes) of the Mini Mac. About 5 pounds of dust was extracted. Upon reboot I noticed the change in the systems performance immediately. I made an attempt to force an overheat to pick a fight with the fan, but I noticed an immediate change. There is no longer forced shut downs or force sleep in the system while working on projects.

I am very impressed with the help from this forum. Buko, I will blast my personal mac every 6 months. Great suggestion.

Thanks guys.

Mike

I've tried both vacuuming and compressed air (can and electric unit). My impression is that the blowing technique provides a better cleaning. I should add that I vacuumed with a shop vac which is powerful enough to suck up carpets.

Of course you do it outside or in some part of the house where it just won't settle on the computer again. I've used the compressed air on several hundred occasions always making sure that I'm grounded by touching the case and the nozzles never actually touch components. I also have industrial grade compressors available but feel the pressure might be too high unless regulated down to maybe 20 or 30 psi. Generally they are set up for 80 psi so I used the more specialized tool.

If there is lots O dust, I'll use the compressed air to blow off the dust and have a vacuum going to get the dust in the air. I have found this works well in a small area like under my desk. That way I don't have to pull out the computer.

I blew the crap out of this bad boy and I see no need to suck the dust. This method worked perfect for me.

Talk to Customer Services and see if Adobe will replace your Spanish version for the English one.

However, I did notice that when I installed CS4, the program asked for my choice of language; so you could try uninstalling and re-installing CS4 and see if you can do an English installation.

I doubt very much that that will work Ann. English versions are always separate from any other ones. If you want English you need to buy English, it is not included with the localized versions. It would be good though if it were such an easy choice as to choose language upon installation.

Dan E Boy

With 10.4.11 you should not be seeing this difference between CS3 and CS4. I thought it was only a 10.5.x issue. All though we did see this issue with LR1.3 that was then corrected in LR1.4. As to the LR2.3RC problem it was corrected in the LR2.3 final release.

Have you tried the ColorSync workaround?

Your printers are register in ColorSync?

It is possible because CS4 is different than CS3 is in 10.5.x that there could be something that is setting (by default) or changes something in the driver that is causing the double profiling in 10.4.11.

Hi Dan,

This actually has nothing to do with the color profiles and yes, I had this problem with 10.5.6. I had the exact same problem and was able to solve it as follows:

My Original Problem: CS4 prints too dark. When I switch to CS3 without changing any other parameters, all is well, and the prints come out properly.

SOLUTION:
I was lucky to have a laptop with CS4 that printed just fine. I noticed that the Epson printer driver on the MacBook Air was different from the driver on my iMac. The iMac driver had been updated to the latest version while the MacBook had not been updated but rather had a fresh version of the driver installed.

Hoping this was the key i deleted to trash the Epson printer driver on my iMac (StylusPro3800-09A6E5 (IP)).

Next i downloaded the latest printer driver for the Epson 3800 from the Epson website (StylusPro3800-09A6E5) and installed it from scratch on the iMac

I then went to system preferences and opened Print & Fax deleting the Epson 3800 printer (hit the - button). I reinstalled the Epson printer from scratch. Hit the + sign and wait until the printer is found (printer has to be on) . The OSX interface will find the new driver and install the printer with the new driver.

I launched CS4 and the prints no longer looked too dark, but identical to CS3.

I'm not sure, but it sounded like you have not yet installed the new printer driver, and fully deleted the old one. Not an "update", but a full reinstall of the driver is necessary. (Dated 09/18/08 for the MAC)

Hope this helps.

Magdalena

Magdalena,

The steps I took on the driver install were this:

Deleted the printer from Print/Fax (PrintCenter) by pressing -
downloaded the driver from Epson.
ran the uninstall option to delete any previous driver.
ran the install option to add the new one.
Added the printer to Print/Fax (PrintCenter) by pressing +

The driver that I'm using is epson12786.dmg I haven't heard of the StylusPro3800-09A6E5 that you're mentioning. is it from another region on Epson's site?

On another note, I ran the same file, but had the printer handle the color, and it came out almost identical to the one I did in CS3. Very frustrating :(

CS4 seems to prefer to install User-created Actions, Styles etc., in:
User/Library/Application Support/Adobe/ Adobe Photoshop CS4/Presets/.

I don't know if the reason for doing this is so that we don't lose our personal Actions etc. if the Application itself is un-installed – but it might be.

If you are the only User of Photoshop on your machine you might choose to put your own saved Actions and Styles in the equivalent folder in your Application/Photoshop folder as we did in earlier versions but it does seem that Photoshop can find them in either location but looks first in the User location by default; but subsequently goes to the last location to which you navigated.

I think that having Adobe-installed Presets in one place; and User-saved Presets elsewhere is confusing.

I agree!! This is my first PS experience. I came from PSE 6. Would much prefer one location! Will it "hurt" to put them in both? If PS were uninstalled, wouldn't it take User folder also?

Helen,

Experience has shown over and over that the printing experience on Macs is vastly different from that on Windows.

As shown in Help viewer>workspace>recovery and undo,>work with the history palette,>set Edit History Log Options, if I go to Photoshop Preferences>general>History Log>Edit Log items>detailed, I should be getting my history palette edits in Bridge. I did click metadata.
I do get good raw records, but no history palette states.
My edit history looks like this:
2009-03-10T19:33:20-04:00 File
oldmontreal.psd opened
2009-03-10T19:58:39-04:File
oldmontreal.psd saved
date again
file name opened
date again
file name saved
That's not detailed, is it?
bridge2.1.1.9 not the latest version, but this feature was there from the beginning
CS3 10.0.1
leopard mac 10 5 6

CS3 10.0.1
