This past weekend, after thinking that there might be a virus causing some of the issues, I reformatted the entire system, downloaded all of the latest drivers for "all" of the components that I could find. That didn't fix the OGL crashes. I then thought that it was the old video card (7300LE [still, with the latest drivers]) so I put in a 9600GT (was going to do it anyway... the 7300LE sucked), and updated to the latest drivers for that (v181.22). Still had the crashes, and memory usage issue. I rolled back to CS3 yesterday (still kept LR 2.2) so I could get some work done. I'm currently trying a reinstall of CS4 one more time, with the nVidia setting to compatibility mode to see if that might be something that I had overlooked (though, I'm almost positive I had tried this, but with the old card)

Batter up.

I'm with Ed on this one, never known it to happen and the only time I've noticed the save layers during save is when I was saving a tif with multiple layers (rare now as I just go psd instead).

As for recovering your layers, I'm afraid that's not possible once they have been flattened and the file closed.

Sorry! I know how much that sucks. :(

Agreed on both Wolf and Myl. And I'm a bit surprised CS3 works well on that system. P4 is the new Celeron and the HT's only slightly better with this stuff.

Am I to understand you're using only one hard drive? Myl's right; HD's are cheap so get at least one more for file storage and/or scratch disc.

CS4 will whine for more power if you put it on that system. Stick with CS3 for now but if you know you're going to get a newer computer soon and if you have a suite, go ahead and order CS4 before the end of the month before the reduced pricing goes away. Don't know if that's affected if it's just the one app.

Response to Fran M. and other respondents:

First, to Fran, I apologize for not responding sooner. I didn't get an e-mail message about your first post.

Next, I started this thread 'cause PhotoDeluxe is an easy-to-use tool compared with its power, but I had a problem with its dying unexpectedly; and I wanted to know whether I could recover my work. Bob Levine quickly disabused me of any such hopes. However, in the process, I learned that I'm not the only one who yearns for SOME power without a steep learning curve.

Those posting recently, including you, Fran, have supported my impression, even if they didn't intend to. Q Photo, for example, makes fun of the auto-body repairman who used a fileboard. (THIS IS AN ANALOGY, FOLKS, not an exact comparison.) True, a sander does the job faster. However, if the shop loses electrical power, that guy can still do the job. Similarly, my '66 Mustang doesn't light up a dashboard signal when things go wrong. However, I can diagnose most of the possible problems using my $8 timing light, my $5 dwell/tach meter, my $4 vacuum gauge, and my $50 shop manual. I don't have to buy thousands of dollars worth of electronic diagnostic equipment to solve the problem. As for the question, "Why use seriously outdated tools when more powerful tools are available?": a bullet will kill someone. Why use a thermonuclear device? Match the tool to the job. That was a minor message in "Home Improvements". We've had shovels for thousands of years. If you're not installing a 40x20' swimming pool, just a sapling tree, why dig a 6x6x3' hole? Who uses a scanner, a word processor and a printer to countersign a check? When all you have to do is minor landscaping, you don't need a backhoe. A shovel and a rake may suffice; and they take a lot less training than the backhoe. Don't use an axe to kill a mosquito.

As for the problem at hand, though, I'm puzzled. PhotoDeluxe (PBE) was never released beyond v. 1.1. Fran, are you sure that you were using PBE? Your description of ease of use seems to indicate that you are. Can you confirm which product you're trying to use?

Also, if something stops working for you, there are several explanations. Among them are viruses of all sorts, MS or Windows updates which alter a .dll used by PBE, and hard disk (HD) errors. The most likely are HD failures. How old is your hard drive? It's rare, but sometimes Windows doesn't correct for HD errors perfectly. Your reinstallation may have put PBE in a location on your HD which is more stable than its previous location.

I hate to say it 'cause computers are my way of making a living, but they fail in ways which are sometimes not caught--just like people.

Nice analogies...but horribly flawed.

The fact is that timing light and dwell/tach meter will be pretty
useless on a new car...just like PD is on a Vista computer.

Hi Chris, thanks for that suggestion. I thought the obvious thing was to speed up the double click setting. I will try it the other way
.
However I think I may have figured out the main source of the problem. We have all been directing out attention to the mouse and I didn't even consider the mouse pad. About a week ago I bought a new mouse pad and thought that it could be the problem. I thought all pad were created equal. This new pad is very thin and has a texture. It's called Wowpad and is oversized also. I switched
back to my old pad to test the theory and so far I have not had any early closes with the lasso tool. That may have been the problem.
Too bad, I really love this new pad. Maybe I'll use the new pad for everything and when I am doing some intricate selecting with the lasso and not the pen I will just switch back to the old pad. Thanks for all the input.

Nice trick JJ, but I cannot simply fill the background with white I had to select a new fill layer between the background and the copy first and fill it with white.

The only other option is to use the Paint bucket tool, but that did nothing. So, I have three layers, not two. No matter I suppose. I've used the fill layer in such circumstances before, but how do you fill the background directly?

Alt+Backspace will fill the background layer with the current background colour.

I just ran into this issue myself. Updating drivers did not solve it, but I seemed to have at least bypassed the problem by disabling GPU acceleration. You can do this by going to Edit/Preferences/Performance, then de-selecting the box that says 'Enable OpenGL Drawing'.

When I go to "Save," I select "Settings" "Other," which brings up the "Output Settings" and under the XHTML settings, I do not have "Include XMP" selected. I had to deselect "Include Comments" under "Coding". This fixed it, but it then said it was HTML and not XHTML. So I went back in and reselected "Include Comments" and resaved it for Web & Devices. No more error message!

Thanks for your help! This was really bugging me.

I used bridge to create a photo gallery in photophop (using one of the templates) and shipped it into a folder within my web site folder (created in Dreamweaver and still in my computer). I then linked the index file in the gallery folder to a menue item in my web site. I can get from the menue to the photo gallery but cannot get back to my home page. Any suggestions? Many thanks.

Working in an Euroland magazine (Southernmost corner)...

I'd try an RGB file with a less wide space (AdobeRGB(1998), for instace) or...

ISO Coated Fogra27 or ISO Coated v2 (www.eci.org).

I'd avoid sending a ProPhoto RGB.
