I have a stack of images that constitute a smart object and would like to apply a stack mode of random. Random would randomly select one pixel from the stack and bring it to the top, go to the next pixel location and do the same, and so forth.

Maybe I overlooked one of the stack modes.

Thanks.

If a watermark on an image posted to the web increases self confidence
then worrying about the pretentiousness of said watermark is the least
of the problem.

I have heard that Photoshop CS4 is not meant to be used on XP 64 but has anyone here installed it successfully? Is it working?

I am trying to install it on my XP 64 PCs and no go. One of them gets pretty far into the installation process and conks out. The other (newer, faster PC) gets this error message when trying to fire up the Installer:

File Access Denied

Both of these PCs are running AMD 64 bit MBs. The older one has 2 GB of RAM while the newer one has 8 GB of RAM.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. About ready to return the product ...

Either back up to XP 32 or move up to Vista 64.

I have a Liteon 20x DVD RW Drive (ATAPI) internal and a Sony DVD DRU-810A external.

The disk would load fine from the latter in my other system (but the install wouldn't finish) but with this drive connected to the newer PC I get the same error message as with the internal drive.

Sounds like what I will do is keep this version of Photoshop and just buy the upgrade for a version of Photoshop that works with Windows 7 (64 bit) when it comes out.

Honestly, all of the new processors/MBs coming out are heading us more and more towards 64 bit. If anything Adobe and the rest of the software world needs to keep up with the hardware. 64 bit software when properly programmed works faster than 32 bit software. It took HP 1.5 years to put out drivers for one of its printers I have for XP 64. Incredible to think that HP would take that long to catch up to the hardware.

I have used XP 64 since 2005 and really like it. Dont want to upgrade to Vista 64 or downgrade to XP 32 at this point so Windows 7 64 bit sounds like how I will go.

All of the CS4 apps, as far as I can tell, run quite nicely on Windows
7. Its quite likely at this point that Windows 7 will be released before
CS5.

Open your colour image.
From the bottom of the layers palette, create a new layer.
Then edit>fill and fill that new layer with 50% grey
Change blend mode of that layer to difference.
From bottom of layers palette get new adjustment layer and choose threshhold.
When that opens, push slider all the way to the left.....the image should turn completely white.
Now slowly drag slider to the right, the first area to appear pure black is the mid-tone.
Then shift-I to get colour sampler tool and click that on the area of black.
Now your midtone is marked........trash the fill and adjustment layers and the mid-tone is marked on the colour image.
Now control-m to get the curves, click the mid-tone dropper on the ,mark you created above and you have your midtone shown in curves.
From there, assess the midtone "recipe" in the colour picker dialogue.

Thanks very much for this.A lot of thought must have gone into it. I was expecting it to be easier. I am ok up to:

"Now control-m to get the curves, click the mid-tone dropper on the ,mark you created above and you have your midtone shown in curves."

In curves, where is the mid tone dropper? When I just open the color picker without looking in Curves, the selection is for pure black at the bottom left diagonal.

Thanks.

By that I meant, in the curves dialogue you have at the bottom the three eyedroppers for black, white and mid point and meant to select that midpoint dropper.

However, have just realised that you don't want to go to curves at all.

Having used the colour sampler to make your mark as my first post, and having trashed the two layers, simply click on the colour swatch icon in the tool box and when that opens use the colour picker tool...click it on the sampler mark as made above and the colour picker box will open with the "colour recipe" of the mid tone shown.

I just recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4 and am finding it changed enough that it's slowing me down. I have a couple questions I hope someone can answer.

What is bothering me the most is that when I left click over an image I no longer can duplicate it, or change its size. I'm stuck with going to the menus and that takes longer than what I'm used to.

I've also been unable to figure out how to split the properties panels that now want to form two columns instead of one, and I haven't figured out how to break any given panel up and use only the part I want.

My guess is I just haven't figured out how to set the preferences to get what I'm looking for. Any help would be much appreciated.

The interface changes are very extensive and too numerous to explain here.

I strongly suggest you look at the introductory videos on the help site accessed from the Help menu in CS4. There are dozens of useful links on that page.

when I left click over an image I no longer can duplicate it, or change
its size.

On that one, assuming you mean "when I right click on the title bar of an image", it's gone. I assigned a shortcut key. I now have F11 for the resize dialog and F12 for save for web.

Hi,

I am a Web Designer. I have been using Photoshop CS4 for four months. I have some questions about your software. I had problems with my nvidia graphic device when i was using CS4. However, i found "PSCS4GPU_OptionalPlugins" file which becomes the solution of my problem... I may say; CS4 is faster than CS3 for now. But there is another problem exists. When i'm working in Photoshop for a while (approximately 15 minutes), photoshop is getting slower and at the end, become unstable and no longer able to be work. For example, moving image with hand tool or other all processes in photoshop obviously slow down. On the other hand, restarting photoshop is fixing this problem. I changed every single performance settings at a time to find the problem but there hasn't been a solution that i can catch. I search support forums for this problem but i didn't find anything also. Please help me.

Photoshop performance settings are the followings;

History State: 25
Cacge Levels: 4
Memory Usage: 1125 MB

All other settings are standard.

My computer specifications;

Q6600 2.4GHz QuadCore 8MB 1066MHz
4 GB 800MHz DDR2
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB
Asus 8800GT 1 GB Nvidia

Thanks for the replies!
Although I still haven't found the real problem for it, the preview panel keeps on freezing, I do have a wokaround found for it.

Because I have a docking station for my laptop, with some free slots in it, I bought a second hand Video Card with 512MB and better performance than the on-board card in the laptop.
I hooked up a external LCD monitor to it and now it works just fine, with no additional modifications in Bridge.

So, although the Bridge / video card still occurs on the laptop, I don't mind working this way.
Maybe a newer driver in the future will solve this problem.

Kind regards,

Stefan

Chris,

I've sent you a link to the 3 RAWs that I managed to stitch correctly as JPGs but incorrectly as RAWs by the email in your profile. They're uploading as I type this - please give me a shout if you don't get it within a few mins.

To the other participants - thanks very much for your suggestions as to exposures etc. I am ONLY having difficulty stitching RAW files. JPG files created from the RAWs with no changes stitch just fine, as can be seen in the example linked to in the first post.

I am unable to work out why PS4 works just fine with JPGs, but refuses to merge files in RAW.

I have tried flattening the document, again it flattens with the seams still visisble.

Just to confirm that the 3 RAWs in a zip are now uploaded. If you're unable to access them please get in touch. They're on yousendit.com so will only be around for 7 days before they're taken down.

Cheers,

Adam

Sorry, I know this isn't related to Photoshop but as some of you have Eizo Monitors. So, I was wondering if you have the same issue as me when trying out Win7 beta.

I know it's still in beta and that it's a little rough around the edges..however, when I run ColorNavigator 5 (tried ver 5.1 to 5.2) It tells me the hardware calibration is not recognised and advises me to unplug the USB and start over....basic the software cannot see the hardware.

sidenote: I tried it on a separate disk with the same hardware and performance seem the same as my Vistax64 with no obvious speed gains...It does have some niffy new features and navigation enhancements....
