Dear Mr Phosfour dots, if you think you are too smart to reply a stupid question, why don't you skip it all together huh, since your free, voluntary time is so precious.

People are so arrogant in anonymous forums, they are really becoming unbearable.

Pro Artist, "Latest" is almost meaningless, please state the exact version, maybe also the firmware version of your videocard.
Some other users reported a big bost when updating directX, don't know if it is related.

Please give all info that Adam requests.

Adam/Chris

Another factor in some aspects of the lag may be file size and number of layers. I know some users use huge files and dozens (or hundreds) of layers.

I know some symptoms of the lag also occur independently of these factors but everything needs to be taken into account.

Not using tablet on my MSI m670.Never had troubles with CS3, but in ver4 met:

1) slow working
2) already mentioned, brush round disappears, leaving small part - no way to define where you're painting >(
3) in PNG "Save for web" dither and color masks disappeared
4) interface got worse and tabs names take more space, and there's no way (tick) to stop menus from hiding some

Btw, InDesign isn't better also ;)
God bless I've tried the trial first. Will be looking for CS3 again.

Sure, George, but it's kind of a PITA if you're used to working with Illustrator's vector tools and functions.

(For me, anyway)

Chris, I remember fiddling with themes some time ago, I was just disturbed by the colors of the icons, not by menus readability, but it was pre-CS4. I remember seeing odd stuff on windows with windows classic mode. (drop down menus too white) in CS3. XP theme always seemed more "solid", but not as customisable as Classic (I get smaller windows frames, and less disturbing colors)

Acro, could you go step by step, from the default XP theme, and try to explain when the menu "fails"? There is nothing custom in your install (no Powertoys, windows blinds, etc?)
Can you confirm that you had similar issues with previous versions?
Did you try on another machine, to confim that the bug is not in your windows install?

Resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

<http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1>

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.

This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

What's problem occur? How can I using more memory?

Thanks a lot.

Please check the Microsoft knowledge base on how to set the /3GB switch in your boot.ini. Once done, PS and all other Adobe apps should be able to use up to 3GB on XP.

Possible. Anything pre-CS3 has never been officially tested on Vista, so there's no guarantees. Quite likely that it will be stopped by some security mechanisms or the inability to install some of the required services.... Are you at least properly running as administrator? During install, you may also wish to turn of DEP and UAC and allow your system to install unsigned drivers and apps. Maybe that improves matters.

this is bad since people who aren't aware of this have a false sense of saving their file and it may end up taking up extra hard drive space when users resave it to the proper location

Hi. I think, I've spotted some interesting things.

This is where I started off:

Then I took this paper texture:

Now, I resized it to fit the background notepad and made several identical copies of the texture layer, their only difference being different values for "blend if underlying layer", so that the texture smoothly ends with the underlying notepad on each side (as there are luminosity differences both on the notepad and the notepad's background).

That looks fine for "normal blending" (don't worry about the messy bottom, it will be cropped when everything's done). But I actually need the texture to be multiplied with the background layer. Obviously setting each layer to multiply isn't going to cut it because they would multiply each other, too. So I need to either put all the layers into a smart object (option 1) or – option 2, which I'll resort to here – put all layers into a group set to multiply, since this way all of the layers in the group are put together first and the composite group is then treated as a single image and blended with the rest of the image, using multiply.

But look at the – unexpected – results:

... whereas I rather expected the result to look like this (I only roughly masked the edges for demonstration purposes):

To me it seems, as if putting the group would nullify the "blend if underlying layer" settings for each layer. Besides, the same happens if I use a smart object instead of the group (option 1). I don't see why this should happen at all.

So my questions: Is this behaviour deliberate? And if so, can somebody explain ? And can somebody suggest a solution to get to the last screenshot (without masking manually obviously) ?

The drive is a dedicated drive, so it is wiped clean at each PS exit. I could understand a drive problem if i was seeing that the drive actually was used during Smart sharpen, but it wasn't.

I'm not complaining, mind you, but I want to know why, so as to be able to go back to this condition should it revert to the slower one.
