the latest you can go to is cs3. that would keep you in the upgrade path... unfortunately adobe no longer sells it to people or companies. that said, as of last week, there were still some cs3 upgrades available at amazon.com. i'd hurry because once they're gone, they're gone. DON'T buy from amazon resellers. only from amazon.com themselves. (i.e. only if you can use "Add to cart", not "See all sellers").

Sorry, I forgot to mention to put all the multiply layers into a group set to "pass through". This way, the shallow knockout keeps the layers from multiplying with each other, while each layers characteristic is passed down to the background layer.

You are right, that solved the issue. Thanks PeterK. I find it so nice that you and the other guys here lend a helping hand. You are good people.

As for the blending issue, it just shows me, that I've to go through the documentation again, apparently there are things I didn't get. In case you can say it in a nutshell: why does *anything* change if I put layers inside a "pass through"-group? I thought this mode lets the group parse all the layers one-by-one as if they weren't in a group. I though it was just a way to have a better overview on your layers.

And does it make sense to you that a "multiply"-group nullifies the "blend if" parameters ?

you need to set the boot.ini switch "/3gb" in windows. google for instructions from microsoft on doing that.

There is no "boot.ini" in Vista.

Look for "IncreaseUserVa" instead.

I upgraded from CS3 to CS4 several weeks ago, and everything seemed ok except for a few little quirks with onOne. I was able to work around these issues and thought CS4 was great. Now the problem.......I tried to open CS4 yesterday and it would not open. Blue box came on screen and went through the process like it was launching, then message came up "CS4 has quit working". The program closed and continues to do this every time I try to open it. CS3 works, Bridge works, Lightroom works, only the CS4 will not work.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled the program. Everythig loaded fine with no messages or problems. But.........it still will not work. I need help!

see the faq about resetting the preferences. (not sure if it still holds for cs4, but it has for every version since 5.5...)

Is the OnOne software already updated to a CS4 compatible version? If not, it may completely mess up things. This is a known problem.

Creating a template for N circle segments
is fairly simple. Edit the code below, for
instance by N=8, and save as EPS.
Open by PhS, AI or ID. Don't worry about
the small file size ...

Gernot...

When editing that code, do we replace ALL instances of 'N' with the integer of our choosing?

Not yet. Just spent the morning setting up a fresh XP Sp3 box. I'll spend the day cycling video cards in and out of the box to see if I can repro (starting with the cards people have reported as problematic).

Apply a Stroke layer style and set its mode to Gradient Burst. Should give you perfect control over edge fading. Similarly, you can use Outer Glow to the same effect.

What is your screen resolution and layout? It's possible that your graphics card is not correctly reporting the resources to your system with odd monitor combinations and NVidia Desktop settings....

I have a very basic 1600x1200 resolution which is pretty standard for a non wide screen setup.

I just deleted my CS4 settings file at startup as described by adobe's help files as they said it might be holding onto old info. I don't get the initial error now and I am getting some changes (no more flickering when moving the files around, and there are smooth transitions now between zooming and moving) so I am assuming this is the OpenGL feature set?

I still do get a popup on load however that says "to download your latest video drivers please visit..."

I wish adobe provided a utility that tests your functionality (much like direct x and some video games do) and would issue a pass or fail and if so give an explanation.

It's a weakness in how the new interface calculates positions of docked items. Maybe it gets fixed/ changed for CS5. I have my own peeves with the system, but in Dreamweaver. We all have our small burdens to bear, I guess. ;-)
