I'm saying I'd create the pie wedges as vector objects, and keep and use them as vectors so they'd re-render as cleanly as possible if I decided I wanted to move, rotate or resize them. Once you've created a pixel-based selection or mask, you're kind of limited in what you can do with them and still maintain original quality.

I've learned the hard way too many times about trying to tweak pixel-based objects and not having them meet the quality standards I enjoy, so I do what I can to use vectors wherever possible.

Interesting. I was going to suggest that maybe your drive has be defragmented, but that wouldn't effect the scratch file like that.
The only thing or two things that I can think of, is either your preference files have been repaired or you received an auto update.
To my knowledge the only recent update is for InDesign.
It certainly is interesting though.

There are a couple of ways to do screen printing. Do you have the equipment to do it your self or are you going to outsource the printing?
For gradients I really recommend that it be sent out to be printed.
This way you can set up your image as 2 spot colors. There is a small tutorial on creating spot colors on photoshop TV. I believe it was one or two weeks ago.

Doesn't sound all too wrong and is actually rather logical - save outside the current folder to prevent accidentally overwriting files that may be contained therein, but leave clues as to where the file would go by applying the folder name in the file name. You know, there really are people who use "Unnamed 1.gif" on their websites... if you want it changed:

Why would the "Reading Preferences" take no time at all one day then the
next take over a minute?

Because the prefs are damaged, most likely. In such cases the program will test each option and compare it with defaults. It's just odd that it does not repair the damage on program exit by writing clean files. Try to reset the file as per the instructions provided in this forum and elsewhere. Also reset your brushes and actions palettes. If you have customized them heavily by loading a ton of extra stuff, they may take forever to load.

Kross, you may be onto something there with the DirectX update. I just tried it and it helped me to, to an extent.

I'm running Vista 64. I ran dxdiag and it said I had DirectX 10, which I think installs with Vista 64.

I ran Microsoft's DirectX update. The web installer (Nov 08) wouldn't work for me.

I had to download the full end-user redistributable (Aug 08)and that installed fine.

All of a sudden I can now get an image display with Use for Image Display enabled, whereas before I had to have Use for Image Display disabled. Redraws were good with PS CS3, but they're now even faster with PS CS4.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any improvement for me with the lag for the brush, clone and heal tools (and maybe other things). With the clone and stamp tools, the new smart cursor in CS4 offsets the disadvantage of the lag, but there's no offset for the brush lag.

I'm using a corded mouse with generic MS driver and no tablet installed (yet).

Check for data execution prevention and these things. With SP3, some of these sometimes get enabled if during install of the SP an unknown program signature is encountered. And of course check the usual - complete Windows Update (MS installer components), virus scanners, firewalls, other security tools...
