In CS4, a long file name in a light yellow box pops up as I am editing an image, using the clone tool, etc. The name will have the computer / disk / folder / dataset name / etc. Great info, but totally useless to me. It is just in the way.

This info. is very distracting to me as I work. Can someone help me with how to turn off the spigot so that this file name box stops popping up as I am trying to edit images?

Thanks,

Mark

Adobe did change something to make it easier for the Intel (and other vendor's) driver to be recognized, but you need the latest driver update from Intel to get everything working smoothly. I haven't verified yet whether the latest publicly posted driver includes the needed fixes. If you try it, and it's broken, please post the driver version number here.

I just installed driver ver 7.15.10.1666 by downloading the zip package and using the "have disk" option in the update video driver section. Seems like all installed properly, but Photoshop still reports in the preferences "No gpu options available with Photoshop standard."

Using Vista Home Premium 32-bit.

Update: Got the OpenGL goodies to work by resetting the OpenGL settings that I had twiddled with to default.

But just as Anastasiy Safari pointed out,the driver crashes when I use any other tools.

I love Photoshop
I am not willing to switch to another (most likely inferior) product

got too much invested in learning (time) and archived files (layered psd's)
and like Microsoft it is most compatible with the most users I have to deal
with on output

and of course the most helpful people share their knowledge on newsgroups
like this for free and some even share their stuff at the Exchange, also for
(mostly) free
& has widely available tutorials
even though I whine alot about stuff I don't like, I LOVE working in PS!!!
(maybe we haven't told you so enough)

can you make the fabric areas transparent first and then put the fabric
layer underneath?

IOW make a line drawing of the garment with no fill color at all (no white)

1. I guess you're saying that scratch performance varies so widely there's no good description of how it generally behaves. Nothing like "lots of small writes (around 4K) while loading, complete mixed bag while editing"? Do you (or anyone) know of any utilities that would help me to see r/w sizes and frequencies?

4. Here's where the idea came from: <http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=669&type=expert&pid=7> :

SteadyState reroutes all disk writes, regardless of their randomness,
to a contiguous 'change' file. This brings small write performance much
closer to the 'sequential write' speed of a given drive. In the case of
the X25-M, it will significantly reduce the internal fragmentation that
occurs as a result of random writes.

5. :( Any plans for uncompressed PSDs? Or maybe multi-threaded file loading?

6. I'll give them a try.

Thanks very much for your answers, Chris.

Evelyn,

The displacement map isn't working because it is buried within too many folders.

Here's how deep the distort filter works...

Adobe<presets<textures<named folder<folder...at this level and deeper the distort filter fails.

HTH,
Terri

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know exactly what you mean by "buried." Did you read my whole (I admit, VERY LONG) post? I said that the displacement map document is in the same folder with the texture that I want to wrap on it.

Also when I use the displacement map from the tutorial, which is in a different folder, the process works.

If you mean something else by "buried," please explain.

Today I tried another experiment. I took the displacement map ("A") from the tutorial, which has always worked, and I placed the new face that I want to use ("B") on a different layer in document A. Then I erased the layer with picture A on it, so in effect, whatever settings were present that were causing the displacement to work on A were now applied to B. And sure enough, the displacement map worked.

The only thing I've been able to see that is different from the maps that work and the map that is not working is that in the color palette, the maps that work have "gradient ramp" selected in the drop-down menu and the only slider present is "K.". My teacher says that shouldn't matter because you can make a gradient map in RGB or indeed in either R or G or B.

So... although I very much appreciate your reply, no, it didn't help.

I said that the displacement map document is in the same folder with the texture that I want to wrap on it.

Whether they are together or not shouldn't be a factor. FWIW, they don't have to be in the same folder for displacement.

When I say buried, I'm talking about how many folders the displacement map is enclosed in.

Try this:

Move the displacement map you made onto your desktop.

Run the displacement filter.

Does the distort filter apply the displacement map from the desktop location?

If it applies, the problem is where you stored the displacement map...not the map itself.

Okay, I put the displacement on the desktop and it did work. Thanks for that great suggestion. :)

Why did the displace function work repeatedly with the displacement map that I downloaded with the tutorial? It was "buried" also???

Does this mean that whenever I want to use this function, I need to drag the displacement map to the desktop? If so, that's okay... I can do that.

Upgrade from CS2 to CS4 Extended. How may I retain the document window behavior from CS2? Each new document opened in CS4 now fills the entire screen rather than floating. I cannot find a present to accomplish this.

I am trying to calibrate my screen and the documents I have (instructions, books, web sites) use both the terms 'luminance' and 'brightness'. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two? Are they the same? The instructions I have tell me I should have a 'luminance' of 100-120 cd/m2 but my monitor only adjusts the 'brightness'. Thanks!

How do I disable Adobe Gamma in the start file? It pops up every time I turn my computer on. But, I purchased a Spyder 3 Pro calibration device and the instructions tell me I should disable Adobe Gamma otherwise the calibration I perform is 'neutralized' each time I turn the computer on. Thoughts? Advice?

If you are using Win XP, click on start, then run. Then type in msconfig, click ok. The system config utility will pop up. Click on the start tab and scroll down till you see Adobe Gamma, uncheck the box, click ok. You will have to re-boot and then you will be ok from then on.

I don't know where to begin! I am trying to learn how to use Photoshop CS4 and to print images. I have consulted several books, web sites, manuals, etc. and one of the things I realize I need to do is to learn how to relate the image on my screen with the print that comes off my printer. I'm using a Spyder 3 Pro monitor calibration device, I have adjusted the color settings in Photoshop, I have downloaded ICC profiles off the web (I'm having trouble installing them) etc., etc. etc. And at the end of all this, the prints I created when I was 'winging it', are far superior to what I'm printing after all these adjustments. My instinct is telling me that its still worth trying to follow these instructions and that it will all come together at some point but the variables seem endless. Can anyone send me to a clearly written site, source? Thanks!
