There is a difference between what one buys for themselves and shooting down the entire concept for others. Options need to be left open as there is always more than one way to do a job. Separating the ego from the technology is important, imo.

1) The exact size of the transfers depends on a number of system characteristics and which optional plugins you have installed. In general, it should be equal or less than the tile size (which varies due to the above factors).
The pattern of reads and writes depends a lot on what you're doing, the size of the document in RAM, the available RAM, etc.

2) Not that we've been able to determine. The performance has more to do with the RAID controller once you have 3 or 4 fast disks. (2 disks helps, but they're still the bottleneck)

3) No, turning off the pagefile is always a mistake.

4) Not really, but it doesn't sound like it would help anything...

5) No.

6) Try them. They may or may not help depending on the characteristics of your system. (That's why they're optional)

Any file can be a vulnerability. Even Adobe is working on cleaning up its own mess with Flash and Reader/Acrobat right now.

There is no way for you to selectively avoid questionable sites or files. We must use software for this. Set up anti-malware software and use an application that monitors network connections.

There are around a hundred external file types that Photoshop could read. (fonts, profiles, presets of many types, images of many types, text files, javascript, flash files, etc.)

Most of those files are not likely to be used as malware vectors - because most of them do not contain code, and the loading is too random to create a buffer overflow and reliably execute code. Malformed files are most often just going to cause a program error or crash (of course, I want the files that crash so we can fix that!).

Javascript and Flash are sort of applications (scripts), and should be treated with caution. They do not contain executable code, but could be used to write code elsewhere on the system.

Yes, plugins are executable code - those are potential malware vectors. Plugins should be treated the same as downloaded applications.

The filter list only has a set number of parameters to sort by. You will have to use the Find (Crtl F), and set the criteria to model and then type in the name listed in the metadata field. Have not tried this, but in theory should work if folder indexed.

Hi,

This is better asked in the Bridge forum, in case I'm missing some subtleties: <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bba3d54/>

The Filter list is self building based on the files. 'Model' filter shows up for me when I visit C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Samples\Photomerge

Do your files have EXIF data which includes the Model?

Hi Jim,

The check for GPU (OpenGL drawing support) is the same for both versions with a slight wrinkle concerning enablement. CS4 Extended will split VRAM addressing for OpenGL drawing features and 3D features. So in your case, it should have improved the chances for OpenGL drawing features to enable, not the other way around.

A few things to try are updating to 11.0.1, resetting your Ps prefs. at launch (Ctrl + Shift + Alt), check video card drivers to make sure they are updated.

What OS are you running, and what are your video card specs.?

The missing icons are unrelated to OpenGL. The issue is a conflict with plug-ins, which some 3rd party plug-ins trigger. The current workaround is to try each of the 3rd party About Plug-in... screens until the icons reappear (this has to be done each time Ps is launched).

James - ok, you need to report that to your GPU maker so they can narrow down the cause of the problem in their drivers.

Working on a photoshop image. Horizontal and vertical banding occurs in thin lines of solid colors randomly within the image.

They can be repainted out, but with any zoom or tool action more seem to appear.

They exist even after saving and restarting.

As far as I know (from reading here) Xp64 is not supported by any version of Photoshop... which means you may get it to work, or you may not

Make sure your video card device driver is updated

Run Photoshop in compatibility mode

Is it this particular image or all images?
Does it print that way?
If it is a raw image does it look that way when first opened or only after
processed/filtered?
BTW pre-CS4 Photoshop runs fine on WinXP64. Just about nothing else does,
however.

Yes, the problem is in CorelDraw. They write the IFD (directory) at the end of the file and fail to include the last value (the offset to the next IFD). So when a TIFF reader tries to read the IFD, it reads over the end of the file. Technically, this is a corrupt TIFF file.

I'm not sure how any version of Photoshop read the file - we should have detected the error and bailed out. Hmm, it looks like some versions failed to correctly detect that we were reading over the end of the file by 4 bytes. They read zeros, which just happens to match the "no next directory" value for TIFF. Once we fixed the end of file bug, it exposed the missing value in the CorelDraw TIFF files.

For this specific case, I might be able to add code to work around the corrupt file. But this isn't a bug in Photoshop -- so my change would not be available until the next major release of Photoshop.

You need to notify Corel ASAP so they can fix this bug in their TIFF writing code.

It seems something is changed with the new update from Adobe (PS 11.0.1). The GPU option is no longer grayed. And - voila - the zooming of the canvas now works fine when enabling the GPU! (I guess these were not bugs of Intel?)

BUT! Photoshop CS4 is now CRASHING when using any tool on that shiny zooming canvas :(

Hey everyone,

Lately I've been frustrated by the functionality of the zoom in Photoshop - and I don't mean the Zoom Tool, but simple zoom in/out operations. I seem to recall that the default behaviour in Photoshop was that you zoomed with Ctrl+mousewheel scrolling, and if you just scrolled, then the picture would pan up/down (vertically). And you could untick the "Zoom with scroll wheel" option if you didn't want Ctrl+scroll to mean "zoom".

However for a while now, having that option ticked seems to mean that scrolling (with no Ctrl) is all it takes to zoom in/out, and if you untick the option then you need to press Alt+scroll to zoom; in either case, there is no shortcut for panningup/down.

Anyway, whether this was really ever the case or not, my question is: is it somehow possible to make it so Ctrl+scroll zooms and (simple) scroll pans vertically? Anticipated thanks for any help.

What PS version are we talking about?

Here is the behavior I see in CS4 when all the Zoom options are unchecked in Edit>Preferences, General tab:

- Scroll wheel alone: Vertical pan
- Scroll wheel & Ctrl: Horizontal pan (a little weird that since the cursor changes to a plus magnifying glass)
- Scroll wheel & Alt: Zoom

It's not exactly what you asked for but it's close (Alt instead of Ctrl for zoom).

Hey everybody,

I'm trying to draw some dashed lines in Photoshop, and to this end I've been playing around with the brush settings (Spacing etc). I'm using a square brush, and I managed to draw the dashed line as I want it, with one exception: I can't get the brush to be feathered.

Is it a general thing in Photoshop that you can't change (i.e. soften) the hardness of a square brush, as you can with that of a round brush? I doubt that Photoshop would impose such a limitation - there must be something I'm getting wrong.

I'd really appreciate some help on this. Once again, I'd like to have a soft (i.e. feathered) *square* brush, which I can use for various purposes, including the drawing of dashed lines.

Thanks for any help!

I'm pretty sure Photoshop has shipped with a set of "Drop Shadow" brushes for many years now. Look for them in your Presets folder and load them if you have them.

Now, you can't adjust the harness value on these brushes, but have a look at them to see if they'll work for you.

Solution # 2: Create your own brushes. It's easy, and you can make them with any amount of "blur/feathering you want.

Solution # 3: Use your hard brushes, then give them a Gaussian Blur afterwards.

Better method all the way round: Do your dashed lines in Illustrator and import them for use in Photoshop.

In CS4, a long file name in a light yellow box pops up as I am editing an image, using the clone tool, etc. The name will have the computer / disk / folder / dataset name / etc. Great info, but totally useless to me. It is just in the way.

This info. is very distracting to me as I work. Can someone help me with how to turn off the spigot so that this file name box stops popping up as I am trying to edit images?

Thanks,

Mark
