Thanks Todd, I agree that it is a real pain. Our only chance out in the
country where we live is to use Xplornet and unless you pay big bucks
(like around $190.00/month or more), you are constantly being browned
out by going over the 'fair access policy' limit. We are trying out a
new system that costs $59.00/month before taxes and we have to be very
careful. Doing updates does brown us out for a whole 24 hours. Our only
option is to do updates between 3 and 5 am since that is called 'free
time' and allows more lenience for bandwidth usage. We used to have a
different system that cost us $99.00 before taxes and we still got
browned out then. So we got tired of paying that kind of money for poor
service and it did not seem to work well with our new Vista based
computers. And they swore that this system would be better for data
downloads as long as we do not go over the 'fair system access' amount,
which we can only guess at. It all depends on how many people are on the
system at any given time and there is no way we can track that to more
efficiently use our computers for updates. We can go to a page to see if
we are browned out, but it does not offer warnings that we are getting
close so that we can back off for a while and it does not tell us when
the brown out will end.
If we had another option other than dial-up, I would go for it, but we
have looked into everything and asked around. When you live in the
country (we farm), there are very few options available. And Xplornet
knows that and takes advantage of it. Frustrating! If we lived in town,
we would have lots of options and would be paying less, but living in
the country goes with farming. It has its perks as well as its downsides
and internet access is a definite downer!
Do you know of a way to set Adobe to update at a given time? Seems
extreme to me too, but unless I can get a handle on this, we will be
spending a lot of time being browned out.
Thanks for your help,
Cathy
