In case anyone else is using Silverfast and runs into this trouble, the problem was resolved by deleting Silverfast's preferences, which can be done from the launcher itself, by clicking the little Tools icon to the right of your Silverfast version:

Chris,

so iFreeMem sounds like a useless utility.

Resurrecting this old thread for a second, I just found one instance when iFreeMem appears to make a difference on an older PowerPC box that is maxed out at 2 GB of RAM: I sometimes get a spinning flywheel in Entourage or Firefox (doesn't happen much at all in Photoshop), especially Entourage. At such times, Photoshop suffers. I just tried iFreeMemory in a couple of these instances, and it seems to make a heck of a difference.

It could be a coincidence—or wishful thinking, meaning that the spinning wheel would/could have disappeared in the few seconds that iFreeMem takes to do its thing. What are your thoughts on this in regard to the effect on Photoshop? Running Ps 11.0.1 in Tiger 10.4.11.

Thanks in advance.

I hope this is the right forum. I get confused about where to post what.

I wanted to use the brush tool to make a mostly white background all white.

In choose the brush tool, then option click on a white spot in the photo. But when I drag the brush over the rest of the background, it brushes in black, not in white.

I reset the tool. Still blak. I reset all tools. Still brushing in black, no matter where in the white section I option click.

The white section has a little bit of very light gray in it. Not noticeable.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

What Blend mode do you have the brush set at?

Thanks for your replies! A guy at a store also told me the blue Radeon 3780 would fit my demands.
<http://webstore.gravis.de/Detail.aspx?path=%2fsites%2fwww.gravis.de%2f&pid=170000000000041559>

Problem is, that I have to buy the Mac Pro from Apple, and I just called to learn that I must buy one of the three they offer (can't have no graphic card).

Now it doesn't make sence to me to buy the cheapest card just to take it out and replace it. So I was wondering if I could use the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256MB together with the 3780. Has anyone experience with the combo?

Thanks a lot!

Yes, that's the correct ATI 3870 card - the same one from OWC. <http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435928/>.

Apple won't sell a computer w/o a video card because that wouldn't be a working machine. Other computer manufacturers (like Dell), won't sell this way either.

As for running the 2600 and 3870 together, it'd be iffy but I don't know that for certain. If they don't play nice together, you'll have all kinds of problems with PSCS4. Best would be to run the same exact cards. You might ask about this in the Apple's Mac Pro discussions forum.

Don't completely dismiss the NVIDIA 8800 GT though - despite the shortcomings I mentioned wrote earlier, it's a solid performer. It would also be the least expensive option w/o the need to yank a perfectly good card if it turns out the 2600/3870 combo doesn't work.

Others have reported that unmatched cards even the same brand will not work together. I discovered this myself with two different nVidea cards.

And I fail to see how Adobe can look like a fool when you are seeing bugs
in Apple's product.

Then you need glasses because it affects YOUR product! Have YOU talked to Apple about those bugs?

If people are experiencing problems with an Apple feature that only seems to happen with Adobe apps, it's perfectly logical to assume the problem lies with Adobe. It doesn't matter if that assumption is incorrect - perception trumps right and wrong every time! (fortunes are made and lost on perception) And that's exactly why you keep seeing people complaining about this issue - repeatedly and argumentatively, even after you inform it's Apple's problem.

Spaces apparently works fine with PSCS3. You radically change the GUI in CS4 and Spaces is broke. What's the logical conclusion, regardless of whether or not that conclusion is accurate?

I don't use Spaces so it doesn't affect me one way or another, but frankly, this "not-my-job", "not-our-problem" attitude sucks. These are still YOUR customers. People don't care who's at fault - they just want the problem fixed.

Rather than just pointing a finger and "talk to Apple", it'd instill confidence in YOUR customers if the response was something a little more helpful and understanding.

Something like, "yeah, we know there's an issue - we've reported it to Apple and we're working with them any way we can so they can get it resolved.", would show you actually cared about the people who keep you employed.

Caring about a customer ... Gee, imagine that?

Phil - yes, we talk to Apple constantly. We're still waiting on bug fixes as well.

I'm sorry you read an attitude into my posts that does not exist. And I'm sorry you haven't noticed how many times I've already said that we have worked with Apple, we have filed bugs, but that we can't do anything about it ourselves.

Adobe has done what we can, and all I can do now is tell you is to contact the people who can do something about the Spaces bugs: Apple.

What more can I say? "Sure, I'll go wave a magic wand at Apple tonight and fix their code for them?"

Phil,

Adobe's software is working within Apple's own specifications here. Adobe has been sending over its emissaries with its findings and offers of help for quite some time, but you want to shoot the messenger.

As I see it, the most valuable thing that you and others can do is to bang as strongly at Apple's ramparts as you are here and let them know how important it is to their customers to get the problem resolved.

Neil

have a question that i hope you can help me with. i'm using PSCS4 and i'm trying to delete the "history" that was originally saved in my XMP data. i've gone to the "file info"->"advanced" window pane (tab) and deleted the "history" folder, but the folder continues to reappear with all the initial history data. it appears like i delete the history folder, but then when opening up the "file info" window again (after closing it), all the history is there like it was before i attempted to delete it. can you help me out?
best-- and many thanks.

Try dragging the Layers (and any Paths) from the file with the unwanted metadata into a new file and saving it with a new name.

FYI, I had a crash after merge to new layer with a G5 Quad 8gb RAM and 10.4.11 and PS 11.0. The way I got around it was to save the file after the merge as a new doc and then continue my steps using the new doc.

Sent the report to Adobe.

Do you have OpenGL Drawing enabled? I found it very problematic on my 8-core with the Nvidia 8800. With OpenGL Drawing disabled 11.0.1 seems as stable as 10.0.1.

Using Photoshop CS...in File Browser...when Batch Renaming...we have Mac OS default setting and not selecting PC or Unix. But for some reason, the process is converting the original JPEG or RAW image files into an unreadable document or Exec file. We are using Mac OS 10.4.11. Is this some setting we've inadvertently activated OR another cause?

Not quite following you there.

Yeah, never mind me... I just found it funny that you specified this was on your desktop. Made it sound like notebook users had a different key to access zoom or something. :)

Probably your video card (or your laptop).

Check out this vid and tell me how it compares to the performance on your desktop speed-wise. I start out at 1% zoom and let it max out.

All,

I am trying to set up an new Action for Portrait work that allows me to come in and out of the Nik Color Efex menu for additional input. I can set the workflow the way I want to, but the oddity is as follows. If I pause the Action (waiting for input) the Nik Menu comes up, but the filtering does not take effect when I exit the filter. If I choose not to open the Nik Dialog box but just process it, the resulting image shows the update and the additional layer created. Why would enter the filter, hitting O.K. NOT take effect simply because it is in an action? Any help is appreciated.

I am running CS3 on a Mac Book Pro.... Leopard OS 10.5.6

Jay S.
