I can wait all day, it don;t boot. I've created a new shortcut from several different routes, I click the icon to boot and I will get the spinning icon where windows is telling me its doing something, then that will go and thats it. I will have a 4k process for photoshop, but I could wait a week, it wont boot.
So I have to keep pressing until it boots, something is hanging it, just hoping someone else has had the prob and found a fix.

If it is any consolation, I understand Adobe is aware of these deficiencies and is working on them.
LOL John, the cynic in me say's that I won't be holding my breath. :-)

As I said you have to draw the box as a Shape Layer. No need to duplicate the Background.
Type the text and position it.
Using the Rectangle tool (with "Shape layers" selected in the Options bar, top left) draw the box with desired colour as the foreground colour. Drag this new layer beneath the text layer; then select that layer, plus the text layer and do Ctrl+A.
Align.

John, I must be a bit thick here, but can you tell me exactly how to draw the box as a shape layer?
also can't find the Shape Layers in the Options bar, top left either. All I have is Feather, Style and Refine Edge?

Yes, was being thick I was using the rectangular marquee not the rectangular tool. Sorted now. Works fine. Thanks for your patience John.

You are still using the Marquee, that is a selection tool!

Running Windows XP Pro and CS2. The Nikon D300 nef format is only available with a CR plug in that is incompatible with CS2. Do I have to upgrade to CS3 or CS4 in order to be able to access my D300 images in a card reader? Is there another way? Thanks.

You could try using the free Adobe DNG converter, the Nikon software that came with the camera or one of the many third party raw converters that are available

Part one of two:
Anthony, our specs, according to SiSoft Lite, are similar. However, my date of manufacture is Feb. '07, as opposed to yours, Nov. '06. Your Library Version is 7.14.10.636, whereas mine is 6.14.10.6903. Your card has one head, mine has two. Everything else is the same.
Part two:
Chris Cox,
It still sounds like a driver bug.
It appears that you are correct, at least to some extent. This morning I discovered that ATI has released new drivers for my card, Catalyst Control 9.1.
I first downloaded only the driver, and installed that. Bad news. My second monitor was not recognized, and CS4 would not open at all. Got an error message and was told to terminate the program. I uninstalled the driver, downloaded the complete Catalyst Control Center 9.1 and installed it.
CS4 opened with the message about my video card not being capable, and that OpenGL would be disabled. I enabled it anyway, in prefs, and the OGL stuff seems to be working.
My biggest problem, that of window content disappearing after dragging a file, has gone away. I still get flickering of the image content while dragging, but the content eventually displays. This is annoying, but at least it is now a workable situation.
Bottom line: If you're experiencing the vanishing window content problem with an ATI card, get the 9.1 CCC update and give it a whirl.

Hey everyone,
This may have been touched on in another topic but probably not as specific as I need. Can anyone tell me what benefits(specifically, new features, updated features) are there for a portrait studio to upgrade from Photoshop CS3 to CS4? The studio I work for is trying to decide if it is worth the upgrade or if we should just wait for CS5. Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

A good suggestion and thank you. I hadn't thought of that and I will be downloading a trial thanks to you. However, our volume doesn't facilitate me being able to sit and search out all the new features and how they can help us (though that would be fun). I just thought there might be other portrait photographers on here who have found certain features that help streamline their work flow and/or make it possible to do things not possible (or not easily possible) with CS3.

The file size stays the same, so why not have the correct dimensions?
True, of course. But, the OP seemed to be seeking image size/resolution relationship math. Even though it's not a necessity, a working image at the smaller dimensions can often be beneficial in the context of view management. Depending on the available monitor real estate, a 36 x 11 FOOT image at 100% zoom will be displaying a much smaller portion of its extents than a 36 x 11 INCH image will. And, fitting the entire larger image on screen would require a much smaller zoom level. The smaller working dimensions make managing the view and assessing the effects of operations easier to see and evaluate.

How does that work? I thought all this inch-to-foot stuff was a holdover from a 40-inch limit to artwork? An image with the same pixel dimensions will display the same is PS regardless of it's print size/resolution setting. Other RIP software might behave differently (which would be interesting to me).

I stand corrected. Apparently, I wasn't accounting for the difference in resolution.
It's true: 36 x 11 IN @240ppi looks and behaves exactly the same as 36 x 11 FT @20ppi...in Photoshop.
Sorry if I confused anyone else.

Just installed CS4 today and having a play particularly in so much that it integrates with Lightroom my prime RAW file editor without any problems. I've noticed that when I right click on an image in Lightroom and select to Edit in CS4 I get a pop-up advising that this may require ACR5.3 and further advizes updating Photoshop. However, the Adobe Camera Raw update site makes no mention of ACR5.3 (latest being 5.2). Am I missing something here or is Lightroom 2.3RC one step ahead of the gun?

Be aware that these RC versions are Release Candidates, ie not yet finalised for general use.
Should be OK but I'm waiting for the production version.

The pen tool will get a perfect job, albeit with a significant time

1) gaussian blur at about 10 pixel radius.
2) use levels to get back to a fine line, minus the jaggies.
3) manual touch up of any areas that lose significant detail, such as the
tophat's vertical support.
