Interesting thread. Reading it prompted me to run a full scan of the computer which returned trojans (?) in Bridge(CS3) plugins module as well as Flash 9. I am using Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2009 and following links provided to security updates followed by a re-scan now shows my puter clean.

New Mac Trojan Spread By Pirated Adobe Software
By Stefanie Hoffman, ChannelWeb
2:51 PM EST Mon. Jan. 26, 2009
Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) is once again the target of a Mac-only Trojan
variant launched on the Mac OS X via pirated versions of Adobe
(NSDQ:ADBE) Photoshop CS4.
Mac security company Intego issued a security advisory Monday, warning
Mac users of the Trojan variant, which is estimated to have infected
at least 5,000 Macs as of Jan. 25.
The Trojan is a variation of the iServices Trojan malware, discovered
last week, which stormed across users' Macs via pirated versions of
Apple's productivity suite iWorks '09. As of Jan. 22, at least 20,000
users were believed infected by the malware, known as
OSX.Trojan.iServices.A, according to the security advisory.
Similar to the previous version of the malware, the new Mac Trojan
variant is spread through file-sharing sites such as BitTorrent
trackers and other sites that contain links to pirated software.

Somewhere I have the download version of the CS2 trial which, if memory serves, is the full version and can be unlocked with a SN. Anyone know for sure?
And as far as the backup, you just need to copy the CD and *keep track of it*.

So I'm sure if Adobe get the customer support confusion out of the way
for whether the Extended to Standard upgrade is allowed it will be an
easy process in the future
not as easy as popping in a disk and running setup.

I don't think it was possible with cs3. you'd have to call customer service to ask if they'll allow it with cs4. because adobe's becoming so much more lenient with it's paying customers.

Hi. New guy on the board here so here is my first question. I'm using CS3 and I am working on a picture and have quite a few paths already. If I understand it correctly, I make the path and then load it as a selection in the layers window and work with it there. Do I have to save the paths I've made or can I delete them now that they are in layers?
Thanks, Glenn

Path objects are independent of layers.
When you make a path, look at the Paths Panel (Palette). You will see it listed as Work Path.
Re-name it to save it. Go ahead and save them within the document if you want to; they barely add to file size at all.

What are your thoughts
Pretty broad topic, that.
If you are looking for justification in staying with the older version, I have no problem with that. I only upgrade every other version. One reason is that newer versions sometimes bog down on older computers, and I am not willing to buy a new computer every 18 months.
Just follow the upgrade announcements closely to ensure that you will not get stuck with no upgrade path. At one time you could always upgrade from any version. Now it is only possible from the last three versions, and I could see that going to the last two versions in the next release (since the financial results of the last version release were less than Adobe had hoped for).

I have had this same problem with Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP - in the regular mode where you ought to be able to grab the document title bar with the mouse and move it around the workspace, nothing happens. I can select the panel, but not move it. I can resize a document window by dragging the bottom right corner, but I can't drag and drop to arrange documents in the workspace the way I have been doing since Photoshop 3.
Cycling through the screen modes and dumping my preferences did not help at all. I saw the post about changing the window mode to "float" in CS4, but this option does not exist in CS3.
This is a clean install of CS3 on a new Pentium D 2.8 machine with 3 gigs of RAM.
What can I do to fix this?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I have cycled through the screens using the F key but this still does not allow me to grab and drag windows to move them.
I use a left handed mouse, so I tried Dave's suggestion below about using the left mouse button (equivalent of a right-click.) However, the only options that show up are Duplicate, Image Size, Canvas Size, File Info, and Page Set Up.
Thanks for the suggestions - keep them coming. We'll get it figured out yet!

I'm left-handed too - the document drag just does not work with the mouse set to switch primary and secondary buttons in Control Panel (does work with either button, or both buttons).
Am I supposed to switch to right-handed to use Photoshop? That was never the case for CS, 7, 6 etc.

I remember posts from over a year ago that using a mouse in left handed mode did not work with some functions. Being old, and left handed, has not sharpened my memory as to what those problems were. So at least with CS3 there were some problems.

Never used the Extract thing because it either sucked or I didn't understand it well.
Considering how much time I experimented with it, and compared to how well I'm able to isolate selections with more conventional tools B.E. (read: Before Extract), I have to conclude that it sucks.

True. Channel-Ops, Pen Tool, Polygonal Lasso, Layer Masks, and other techniques/combinations rendered Extract inferior prior to its existence. In fact, on the rare occasions when I used Extract, I only used it as a step in initiating a layer mask. I think it was supposed to be Photoshop's answer to Knockout...a Knockout knockoff, as it were. I didn't even know it was gone.

I never used an extraction tool in production because they required more work than doing it other ways. The extract tool sucked as do the 'Knock-out' apps.

Hi Josh,
I just had a friend help me out to solve my problem. I use Canon. Within the Canon software under preferences, there is a tab called Linked Software. In the drop down window I had choosen Lightroom. It turns out this should be None. With Lightroom choosen the Canon software is telling Lightroom to open and causes the Import dialog window to open.
Hope this is your problem also.

This is getting to be quite a load of BS.
I downloaded the CS4 Extended trial program and would buy the complete package no problem if it worked correctly.
AVG stated that the setup.exe file is a Trojan Virus variant. Considered it a False Positive and shut that down along with the Windows Firewall and all other AV.
Setup.exe file cannot be run. I cannot run it from the Admin account nor the User account with elevated status or as right click run as...
From the command prompt running the setup.exe file I get Access Denied
I took over ownership of the file, added users to the file, changed all permissions to full control.. NADA I can cut copy paste rename the file to verify ownership and that works no problem. I just cannot run it.
I then changed my registry settings with a script and a Microsoft .msi (subinacl.msi) file that completely rewrote my registy settings to allow full access to all files on the machine. No Luck
The only other Adobe products I have are Reader. I uninstalled that and all products associated with it. I then ran the Adobe Uninstaller and the Microsoft Uninstaller associated files. No Luck.
I changed the code as described above, changed my web site settings to make IE the primary program, reset my computer, installed the java script .dll file, cut the original download or should I say the third one to the C:, F:, and G: drive with zero results.
I have followed every single piece of advice given to no avail. Even software hackers are having a problem with the setup.exe file (as shown from my Google search). It is sad to see the people helping are users that actually bought this product and not the programmers who wrote it. I wonder if Adobe support has become over loaded and it is not cost productive to have them help us.
Thank god I am a MCSE and CCNA and understand computers better than most. I also have lab computers to experiment on if anything should go wrong. If not I would have given up long ago.
To have someone purchase this garbage for $200.00 - $2000.00 is beyond me. I use the most obscure, proprietary, shabbily written software ever created daily and this is the first product I have EVER downloaded or installed that never worked.
Shame on you Adobe... I will be using .NET Paint and other programs that actually work and have a support system set up by the creators not the users. If anyone has any other suggestions please post.
Original error:
Clicking on Setup.exe from the CS4 window:
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
From the cmd prompt ran as admin:
Access Denied
This happens under both the Administrator Account, User Account with Elevated Privileges and with Three different Downloads.
