Um, that makes little sense.

Spotlight doesn't edit the file to add metadata - it stores some additional data in it's own database.

When an application resaves the file, the original may be gone (especially due to safe saves) and spotlight will lose it's metadata.

Apple might be able to help you.

I responded on the Illustrator Forum and I am wondering how this effects his workflow?

I have never had need to use this info, but then I would never take anything off the web for professional use without permission and then I would know and I would take the Metadata from the bridge save it as a template and load it in Illustrator or Photoshop.

I really do not understand how it can impact some ones workflow and have never heard anyone accessing this info before.

@Wade: The web image is just an example - and I probably do a lot of things on a Mac you have probably never heard of anyone doing! 8^)

@Chris: Thanks for responding.

You say "When an application resaves the file, the original may be gone (especially due to safe saves) and spotlight will lose it's metadata." the original may, in fact, be replaced by an auxiliary file that has been renamed to "appear" to be the original but from a User standpoint this IS the same file and should carry the same metadata, extended or otherwise..

1. Why are Spotlight Comments (kMDItemFinderComments) maintained?
2. Why doesn't InDesign appear to exhibit this destructive behavior yet Photoshop and Illustrator do? (I haven't checked Flash docs yet).

Thanks for your time.

Like what? Just curious!

I would say if it was something Photoshop was not designed to do then what would you expect?

@Chris:

I definitely don't want to tell you guys your business (and I apologize if it seems that way >.< )… this is from Apple's Developer Center: This is the source code for the FSReplaceObject tool, an example command line tool which shows how to exercise the FSReplaceObject and FSPathReplaceObject related APIs. These APIs are provided to assist in properly preserving metadata during "safe save" operations. <http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/FSReplaceObject/listing1.html>

Thanks for listening.

There is more than one FOGRA profile, is this flatsheet or web printing (it sounds like the latter)?

I forgot to say that later versions of Photoshop should ship with a web coated and a coated profile that differ in total ink limits, you may not need to download other profiles.

One can of course manually edit the TIL in the CMYK file, however it is best all round to get things right in the initial separation if you can. This means finding/using the right profile, until Photoshop can modify a standard print condition ICC profile, just like it can make flexible adjustments with the outdated non-ICC legacy CMYK engine.

It's a MBP, it only has a 160GB hard drive.
- How much free space would you say is required?
- Could I use a ext. HD w/ firewire 400 connection?
- Do you really think this problem is hardware related? In other words: do you get smooth dissolve transitions w/ Bridge CS4 slideshows on your machine?
- when I play a slideshow w/ Apple's built in slideshow from the Finder, I get a fantastic smooth dissolve performance, so I guess any drivers I should need should already be installed correctly, or am I wrong?

Selwin,

It's a MBP, it only has a 160GB hard drive.

But that doesn't make just 30GB any more useful. IF you were only to use Photoshop by itself to create small graphics or Web graphics, you might squeak by for the short term. But what happens as even more of the drive is filled up?

I'd clear up about half of that 160GB drive, moving files over to a large, fast external drive.

On the OP, I would generally prefer to take the PDF into Acrobat Pro, apply the transparency flattener with the outline text option so that fonts become vector paths and then open the file into Illustrator if required. I hate to rasterize when I don't need to (even more so at lower than output device resolutions for text).

As for profiles...

I don't know of any Adobe supplied or other profile that will map only to the K plate of a CMYK file.

I think that the often scorned legacy Custom CMYK interface is (99%) capable of doing this [max gcr + 100k limit] and any scum dots that may be left under the K elements can be fixed in a number of ways. Of course, images will also separate with this GCR, which may not be good.

Every time that I dive into Custom CMYK, I wish that Adobe would offer something similar (or perhaps like the old Imation CFM), that worked with ICC profiles. Even if the ICC profiles were only ones blessed by Adobe and not any custom made ICC profile, that would be a start.

Of course, the other option is to wait for somebody to create and freely distribute ICC profiles made from standard measurements with different separation variables for those that understand what they are doing (total ink, TVI, GCR/UCR curve, black start/end, UCA). A one size fits all profile is not enough for those that are serious about press work.

Sincerely,

Stephen Marsh

So I'm having a good ol' time with Photoshop CS4 and I'm using the new Masks Palette. I'm loving how you can feather out even a path. I saved and closed my document. The next time I opened it, none of my nicely feathered paths were there anymore!

I'm used to having to feather out selections made from paths the old fashioned way and I was hoping this feature of the Masks palette would make things go a bit quicker. Either this tool is expressly used as a step to convert Vector masks into Pixel masks, which makes the tool a whole lot more boring, or it's a bug.

Can I commiserate with anyone here?

Photoshop CS4, if obtained illicitly, may not be such a great deal. See the January 26 news article on SecureMac.com <http://www.securemac.com/>.

Nothing to do with the Piracy issue — except that the warning messages which are being experienced may be false alarms that were triggered by installed Anti-viral software.

Also, more reasons for not getting too paranoid about installing "Security Upgrades" prematurely because the cure can be a LOT worse than the very slight risk of infection.

Another way to keep out of the Infection Zone is to abstain from having the urge to try-out every Haxie and experimental lump of software that shows up on Google.

Frankly, I have no sympathy with anyone who attempts to cheat the system by downloading or purchasing pirated software -- and then gets stung. But it's not new news that such software can include malware (Mac or Win). I was aware of this at least 15 years ago.

But a reminder never hurts.

As far as antivirus warnings (yes, I do use Norton AntiVirus on a number of Mac systems over the years; no, I've never had a problem with it), the advice is generally to scan the software at download. Then temporarily disable the antivirus software during installation.

Okay - This is probably a simple question to answer. One that I have thought about for awhile. It applies to a project I have just started... So I thought this would be a great time to find out.

I am creating a large format piece. It is 96" x 72" at 150 dpi.

The printer I will send this to can print nicely even at 100 dpi.

After an extremely long grid and guild set up process (This piece has to look seamless - but will be broken up into many sizes) I brought my elements into the file. The photos I have are larger then I thought. So I wanted to raise the DPI to get the best quality I can. Before I bring the elements into the piece. (At this point the file is just a white background and many many guide lines)

So here is my question...
If I plug 50 more DPI into the piece making it now 200 dpi are the new photos and elements going to stay their true restraints without dithering or breaking?

Will the file read as if it was always 200 dpi when I start to import the photos or will it read as a 150 dpi and resize to 200 dpi?

So if the image sizing wont affect the file I would save much time not having to re-do what I have done.

Thank you very much

Since there is nothing meaningful in the file yet just resize to 200 ppi before you start to import pix.

Thank you.. You answered my question.

I just wanted to make sure the new photos would not be affected by the old PPI size.

I appreciate the response!

Brianna-

Actually this is a good place to start, or better still probably the Photography forum at
<http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?14@@.3bb41392>.

The ACR Forum logically is ACR-centric and like Ramón suggests has good info on using Adobe ACR to convert your RAW images. However there are many other solutions for converting Nikon NEF photos. Many pros find that Nikon CaptureNX2, Capture One or Apple's Aperture provide visually superior NEF conversion to Adobe's ACR. Individual cameras and individual preferences do vary.

Unfortunately with a G4 iBook the limited hardware power is a significant limiting issue. And OS 10.3.x excludes almost everything that will drive RAW conversions from a modern camera like the D40. Probably you are forced into an (IMO inferior) ACR2.4/DNG RAW conversion like Ramón suggests, or for likely far better RAW conversion quality you can investigate using Nikon ViewNX, which I believe came free with your D40 or can be downloaded from Nikon, and alleges to run OK under OS 10.3.9.

IMO Nikon's software is a bit clunky, but only Nikon has full unimpeded access to the RAW data of Nikon cameras, so you will probably like the resultant RAW conversions of ViewNX if it runs adequately on your setup. Do a trial.

These suggestions are in addition to not in lieu of Ramón's ACR suggestions, so try them too.

Good luck!
