My PS CS4 lacks a Help index and the on-line help simply won't down load. Is PS CS4 a Beta for computer geeks or a real help for hard working, time restrained, professional photographers? Think about it.
At this time I am sorry I upgraded from CS3 (as are most the pros I associate with). I think Adobe is trying to do too much, and in so doing, is making Photoshop too problematic.
Anyway can I return the product and get my money back?

Help is available via F1 and the Help menu. It defaults to the on-line "Community Help" page with links to HTML Help, PDF Help and a whole raft of tutorials.
If you're off-line, pressing F1 takes you to the in-product help that shipped with the software, which is not kept up to date. To default to going to in-product help, you need to go off-line in Photoshop. Instructions for doing so are in the Product Help topic at <http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WS2BE9B3A7-44AF-4d86-AC08-912E2D9F1ECB.html>.
I copied the PDF to my desktop for quick reference.

@Freeagent: Thanks a lot. I'll try and compare the results. Just to understand the logic behind it ... why would "custom" be more adequate than sRGB ?

@Gernot Hoffmann + Peter Figen:
I am currently testing ProfileMaker5's "ProfileEditor". It looks really sophisticated.
For what I'm doing, I guess I need to select:
under A: "One ICC profile"
under B: the profile created by my Spyder-calibration-device. Then choose, RGB->LAB and perceptual.
But then ...?
The only tools available for this selection is Gradations and "profile white point". Given that I want to correct a green cast, can I use the "profile white point" ? I tried both tools, but am a bit clueless ...

Mark,
Please, please, do not edit your monitor profile. It will only serve to confuse your issues and you'll never know exactly where you are, color or calibration wise. In the last 12 years of making hardware calibrated monitor profiles, I have never once encountered a circumstance where the monitor profile needed editing and I can't believe yours does either. What you are trying to do is compensate for bad hardware, and that's not what profile editing is for.
Order yourself up a Gretag/X-Rite calibrator and be done with it.

I fully agree with you Peter. That's exactly what I'll do. I have not yet studied the Datacolor Sypder's competitors, but this seems to have a whole new concept (or does X-Rite do the same thing?):
<http://www.basiccolor.de/english/Datenblaetter_E/squid_E/squid_E.htm>
Or is this humbug ?
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that I need a temporary fix for the next week or so, and then I'll look into a true solution.

why would "custom" be more adequate than sRGB ?
It was just that since the sRGB setting seemed to lock down all parameters you had nothing to lose. As the others say, a profile that doesn't give you dead neutral grays is basically useless.
Just go with what Peter says. He's been doing this for a long time.

Thanks a lot Freeagent,
My system is
Intel Core2 Quad Processor Q9450
Vista Ultimate 64 bit Service Pack 1
8GB RAM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700 with the latest driver
I'm using Photoshop CS4 64 bit which is very slow comparing to Photoshop CS3 on the same computer.
To your suggestions:
1. I'm using the latest driver
2-5. Not valid - I don't use these.
6. I tried that, restarting Photoshop after each combination of options following these suggestions from Adobe:
<http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb404898#tshooting>
Unfortunately it made no difference and the slow performance remains
7. That sounds very radical. I don't install programs that I don't need may be except the programs like accessories that get installed by default by Vista. I've never run Registry cleaner before and I'm not sure what this can fix. My Vista installation is about 2 months old and I reinstall system software only when I suspect system corruption. So far I have problem only with slow performance in Photoshop CS4 everything else works perfectly fine. I'm very skeptical about the system being the problem.
Any other ideas?
So far it appears to me that this is a Photoshop bug. But then there will be more people reporting this and Adobe would have been aware and I wonder if this is so. Anyone knows if this is the case?
Before I report this to Adobe I want to make sure that it is not something with my setup but I'm running out of ideas.

"This reminds me of the first real job composite for Sherwood Stereo I
did back in 1995 with Ps 3.0 on a first generation PowerMac 7100 and 72
mb of ram with a huge one gig scsi drive for scratch disc. Applying ANY
type of filter took at least 30 minutes. Saving took another 30 minutes.
The studio was swept very clean back then."
[Insert the hybrid sound of laughter and groaning here]
As recently as 2000 I worked for a small local walk-in copy/print shop, and my system was a Power Mac 7300/180; 32 MB RAM. My co-worker/supervisor complained to the owner about how many breaks I took, smokin' cigs and going next door for bagels and coffee, and what not.
He came blasting in the next morning—loaded for bear—with a 12" × 18" poster project for the local theatre company, and stood nearby watching as I opened it and started working on it. First operations: Copy files from ZIP disk to hard drive. Then, open a 40 MB 14"W × 11"H background image and rotate it just a wee bit more than 90°.
I hit the "Go" button to commit to the rotation and button-holed him to walk next door for a coffee, and then out to the sidewalk for a smoke while we talked.
I explained all my breaks, saying that the system was just too underpowered for me to get work done quickly on the type of projects he was bringing to me, and that there weren't really any "busy-work" duties to take care of. I explained to him why—for months!—I had been begging for a bunch more RAM, but he always balked at the cost. He was the owner, after all, and was always looking at the bottom line.
We got sidetracked, and about 30 minutes went by. We walked back in to the shop. Looking at my monitor, we saw the rotation still had about 10 minutes to go. I could almost make out an actual light bulb begin to appear in the æther over top of his head.
He ordered a GB of RAM that afternoon, after asking me to research the best place to get it.

I'm using the magic wand to select an area I want to replace, then use the patch tool to find pixels to replace it with. It looks good in the preview but when I let go of the mouse, it seems to try and blend what used to be in the selection with the new pixels, rather than just replacing them like I want.
I read where your supposed to include some pixels outside of the area as well so I expanded the selection, but it still does too much blending. Is there any way to just have it replace and not blend?

Is this something like?
It does a fitimage on the short side and then crops using canvas size with anchor top left. It goes on to save the thumbnail in the same folder as the original with a suffix of -thumb (Save for web)
doc = app.activeDocument;
var saveFile = new File(decodeURI(activeDocument.fullName.fsName).slice(0,-4) +"-thumb.jpg");
var startRulerUnits = app.preferences.rulerUnits;
app.preferences.rulerUnits = Units.PIXELS;
fitImageShortSide(75);
app.activeDocument.resizeCanvas(75, 75, AnchorPosition.TOPLEFT);
SaveForWeb(saveFile,60);
app.activeDocument.close(SaveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
app.preferences.rulerUnits = startRulerUnits;
function fitImageShortSide(newImgSize) {
if (doc.width > doc.height) {
doc.resizeImage(undefined, newImgSize, undefined, ResampleMethod.BICUBICSHARPER);
}
if (doc.width < doc.height) {
doc.resizeImage(newImgSize, undefined, undefined, ResampleMethod.BICUBICSHARPER);
}
if (doc.width == doc.height) {
doc.resizeImage(newImgSize, newImgSize, undefined, ResampleMethod.BICUBICSHARPER);
}
}

sfwOptions.includeProfile = false;
sfwOptions.interlaced = 0;

Hi!
Maybe this one can help ya. I made myself with friends a photoshop panel for picking colors - changing foreground color. As an artist I always wanted a panel like this and new CS4 capabilities in building custom panels are amazing! And as a Flex programmer I made a simple color picker as a panel.
You can try it here: <http://anastasiy.com/colorpicker.zip>
Screenshot is here: <http://anastasiy.com/colorpicker.jpg> (when I said simple - I really meant it).
Create folder 'Colorpicker' in Photoshop's Plug-ins/Panels folder then unzip colorpicker.zip contents into it. The panel will be available in Window|Extentions|Colorpicker after PS restart.
For me it's a life savior.
NOTE: There is a bug, when you open this Panel, then choose a color with standard Photoshop color picker and the color is not being changed in Panel. I don't know how to fix it :( Adobe gave a tutorial that does not work. (If someone is listening from Adobe, please mention, that your Flex/PS CS4/SDK tutorials are not working and crash photoshop.)

Well, she says "to send to someone else to print". That's why I originally asked (too obliquely, I guess) if she needed vector or if raster would be acceptable. Everyone seems to have reached the conclusion she needs vector. I'm still not convinced, and think that maybe all she needs is a clipping mask on a raster logo. But then, that may be because I don't know Streamline (which is why I've been keeping out of it).

Bart...
I think I made it clear I understood that (and I think you know me well enough by now to know that I would have ::ahem:: strongly suggested creating a vector version ;) XD). Plus, Jennifer's original question suggests that she also knows that vectors are called for. Sooo, I think we're all on the same page about this. My link just clarifies in simple terms how to post a Pixentral thumbnail here. Seeing the image she's working with might suggest the best, further course of action.

Vista does not run CS4 better. I dont care what you say. CS4 runs terrible on all OS's due to bugs in the software. CS3 runs faster on Vista than CS4.
I recommend staying with CS3 unless you really like punishment.
Adobe is looking into the performance problems with CS4, and so far there is no solutions.
Stay away from CS3. You've been warned. There is a trial. DL the trial and see for yourself. Make sure you give it a good going over, but if you're like most of us, you will notice right away that CS4 is ridiculously slower than CS3.
