Seems CS4 just can't handle me having more than just a few high resolution files open at the same time before it crashes. My photos are fairly "process heavy" with multiple layers and text etc., but still not overly huge files that this should behappening all the time. Never happened in CS3. Crashes seem to happen when doing things like adding text or resizing objects. Any thoughts? I'm running Vista 32 on an HP Laptop with a brand new hard drive and loads of RAM and space....

Here is the error message from the Event Viewer:

Faulting application Photoshop.exe, version 11.0.0.0, time stamp 0x48d3882e, faulting module Photoshop.exe, version 11.0.0.0, time stamp 0x48d3882e, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00e24192, process id 0x16e8, application start time 0x01c9416337f6d7af.

The curves adjustment works totally differently in CS4, but in my opinion so much better. When you use the adjustment panel to select your curves layer you will see a hand with a pointing index finger in the top left of the dialogue. Click on that then go to your image and click on the area you want to adjust. You will see the finger change to a double arrow. Holding down the mouse button just drag it up or down to adjust that area and matching areas. So much easier to see exactly what you are doing.

Adam,

Some have reported unresponsive sliders in CC panels, but I haven't seen
this myself

I was one of those. Since upping cache levels to 8, that has improved to the point of being a non-issue. Guess that was it. Everything working as advertised.

I have a question about DirectX. I already have DX10, because I run Vista. But the link in one of the previous posts points to an update of DX9. Does anyone have a link to the most recent update of DX10 or maybe 10.1 (if it`s already out)?
Adam: I`d like to add some "behaviour" on my system (don`t know, if it`s "normal"):
-When I pan around in large images I often get to extremely blurred parts of the image. They get sharp as soon as panning stops and sometimes I have to release the mouse button before it gets sharp.
-Let`s assume I`m zoomed in and manipulate the image. When I zoom out I get to see the image how it looked before the manipulation for let`s say 0,5 sec. Then it gets updated.
-Let`s assume again I`m zoomed in. Now I want to use "birdseye-view" and press the H key. In large images the "zoomed-out-view" that I get temporarily is very blurry then.
I`m on Vista 32bit,Quad Core Q6600, Geforce 8600GT/512MB, 4G RAM.

Hi Donald,

Your comments hurt me.

why dont you just go outside and find a nice out of focus background and
shoot something more intimate of her.

I do that all the time.

quit trying to do miracles on this shot

Isn't that what Photoshop is all about?
What is wrong with me taking a 'crap' photo and trying to improve it?

do you really shoot that few photos of her that this is the one you are
choosing to do something special with?

I was going to shoot an old guy (with my camera) and I fired off a couple of shots in my house to test it. I liked this photo. The combination of blonde, pink & skin colour backlit by the sun coming through window blinds looked good to me. The backgound is crap. When I'm finished with it I'll be happy to print and frame it and hang it on my wall.
Also I started this topic specifically to get advice on how to change reflection/refraction in glasses. Does it matter what the subject/photo looks like?

Hi Dave,

WHAT A CUTIE PIE!!!

Of course she is! She looks just like me - we both have our own teeth, both wear glasses & we both have blonde hair (mine is a wee bit off white).
Here is a full face photo of her. The likeness to me is uncanny. We have the same complection, only mine is hidden by a beard!

I am indeed talking to ATI about this. Trouble is that I've had issues with this card since day one and never managed to get it resolved while my warranty was valid. I'm just being patient and negotiating as best I can.

I can still benefit from many of the features while I'm resolving my graphics issues with ATI. My laptop has an nVidia card (8600M GT) and while this is one of the cards Adobe tested, there's the problem with the cursor. No updated drivers available either, I'm a bit stuck with that one! I haven't tried to turn on the GPU features on that.

Thank you Chris.

It is interesting that looking at the people having problems I see two
reoccuring themes here.

1. AMD processors.
2. Nvidia graphics cards.

Having been burnt by AMD once before I now always go Intel

Robert, you've been hammering on this for what—about 3 years? Maybe you should give it a rest.

Most people that have problems have nvidia cards, because the majority of PS users simply seems to use nvidia.

I'm a little curious about one thing. I've noticed that very few - if any at all - of the forum regulars seem to have any major problems.

What do most of the regulars have in common? We build our own systems (or so it seems to me).

So here's what I'm thinking: Can any of the OEM/third-party utilities and applications that come with most off-the-shelf computers be interfering in any way?

Another thing - and I'll probably get a sh*tload of angry answers for even suggesting this - could it be that the forum regulars are above average interested in technical stuff, and so tend to have less "dirty", more regularly maintained and updated systems?

As stated in another thread, I had lag problems too (panning and rotating), but the lag dissapeared when I went to PS preferences, Performance, leave "Enable OpenGL Drawing" on, but under Advanced Settings turn off eeverything.

And yes, I maintain a separate pc for PS and such, no cr*p comes near that one.

My system (which I built) works fine:

Intel P35 chipset
Intel Q6600 (2.4GHZ, 800Mhz, 2x6MB, Quad Core)
8GB DDR2 800 Mushkin 4-3-3-10 RAM
BFG nVidia 8600GT OC 512 Mb
Four 500GB (7,200 rpm) SATA II
DC power supply 850 Watt
Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
Two Dell Ultrasharps ( 1920 x 1200, 1680 x 1050)
Two LG DVD/CD drives.

Running Adobe Master Collection (full load), Quark 6.5 (for compatibility), CorelDraw X3, Pagemaker 7 (for compatibility), Office Professional 2007 (full load) & Maya 4.5. I also run SystemSuite 9 for maintainence. Don't do games on this machine.

The problem I have is with zooming and the text tool. Panning and rotating
aren't a problem. Turning off advanced OpenGL settings doesn't make a
difference. There seems to be a lot of people with the lag problems that
have the nVidia 8800 series card, and a lot of people who have the 8600
series are working fine, but it's hard to believe that there wasn't an 8800
card in one of the tester's machines.

100% true. those who care enough about photoshop and their systems to peruse this forum every day pick up all kinds of tips and tricks from the natural sharing and learning that comes from reading problems and helping solve them.

I wouldn't call it wasted. Remember, you're running a lot of processes simultaneously, and all of those nibble at the available RAM. The OS is keeping track of all this, and allocating memory east and west. That's why it's important that the OS has access to as much as possible.

And that's exactly the reason increasing Photoshop's share of the total is not necessarily a great idea.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.

Having said that, I will note that you managed to both not answer my question *and* give the erroneous impression that PS CS4 will not run correctly on XP 64.

Consider:
a)Although it is technically true that PS CS4 is built for Vista 64, it is certainly capable of running on XP 64, and in fact it does so quite well. More to the point, Adobe has released an optional set of [unsupported] GPU plugins to enable GPU support on XP 64, available here:
<http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=39&platform=Windows>

b) Had you read my question more carefully, you would have noted that I knew that the installer was supposed to install both the 64 and 32 bit versions, but that it did *not* do so, thus the POINT of my question. The answer was that I installed to a non-default directory which evidently the installer cannot handle correctly. An uninstall and reinstall to the default path fixed this problem.

(Bonus letter) c) Typing words in response to a query does not an answer make.

Thanks,
Paul

Quite a few people have had major problems with XP64. Maybe your absence of the 32bit version is another.

Did you really look in both directories mentioned by Ender?

I've got a series of 10 PSD files of equal dimensions. Each file contains a
background image and a couple of shape layers (that were formerly text
layers, converted to shape).

I'd like to organize these 10 PSD files as 10 pages in the same PDF (not
PSD) file.

How do I do this? I can save the first as a PDF, but how to I "append" the
others as different pages of this same PDF file?

Thanks.

Hi:

Sorry, I thought that the reply to email adobe.photoshop.windows@adobeforums.com
automatically posted responses, but maybe it does not, so I have added them above.

I have disabled Norton AntiVirius so that's not the issue.

Last night I also searched the registry for "photoshop" and found dozens of entries for PS5 and suspect that there's many more registry entries that need to be cleaned. Next I'll look for a PS registry cleaner.
