a) See if it happens on a new admin account. Just go into Control Panel and make a new one to test to see if it happens there.

b) Remove ALL 3rd party plugins. That means your PS Plug-ins folder should have only 12 folders total remaining in it. See if it happens then.

c) Go to Start. Type MSConfig into your Start Search bar and press Enter.

In the system configuration utility click on the services tab. Check the box that says hide all Microsoft services. Press Disable All. Put a check back into the service called FlexNet Licensing Service. Click on the Startup tab. Press Disable All here as well. Press OK. Restart your computer when it asks. Now see if it happens this way, too.

Actually xrdbear if you read closely I am using CS3. However I think I have found my solution in the Adobe knowledge base. If you set you ram usage too high in pS preferences, you get the run out of ram error before it gets a chance to go to scratch. I lowered my preference to 45% and it went back to working fine (great relief). I can tell it is going to scratch as it slows down a bit, but continues with out error. Kari I hope this helps.

Tom,

I'm pretty sure that if you put scratch disk on a dedicated drive, or a (first) partition on a drive other than your system drive, you'll do even better.

@Gernot

Hmm... So you think Adobe needs to get up an fix this? Have you considered that Preference File corruption can happen to any program from any company, not just PS?

@Randy

a) Go to your Run Command. (So far you haven't said whether your on XP or Vista, so getting to your Run Command is on you.) Type %appdata% and press OK. Your either going to be in a folder called Application Data (XP) or Roaming (Vista). Go inside of the Adobe folder. Take the PS folder (whichever version your are using, since this also has not been specified.) and drag it to the Desktop. Restart PS.

If PS does the same thing, shut it down. Move the folder back where it was to get all your settings back.

b) Go to c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Your version here)\Plug-ins

Remove ANY 3rd party plugins. It doesn't matter when you added them, how well it has been working for however long. Just take them all out if they didn't come with PS in the first place.

Restart PS. If it works, put your plug-ins back one at a time until the issue reoccurs to find the problem plug-in. If not, put them back.

c) New administrator account. Goto Control Panel>User Accounts. Create a new admin called "test" (or whatever you want, really).

Log onto that admin. Does it happen there?

d) Report back here with your results.

I think your right. Microsoft pages I've been reading say that I should be able to access approx 3GB of memory from 4GB system. The other 1GB is allocated to 'high' system processes (whatever those are). My computer is accessing about 3GB of memory but Adobe isn't. That seems to be my problem. There are many 32byte systems out there with 4GB of memory. I wish I had purchased on of those in the first place but I didn't....

When I click to implement action by a third party plugin (buZZ Pro 3) I get an error message -

"buzz error - cannot save to dat file".

If I click the only option - "OK" - the action proceeds correctly. I'd be grateful if anyone can tell me what the error message means. What is likely to be the problem if the buzz action is not being saved to a dat file? I am not clear what a dat file is.

This happened first when I was using CS3 and weirdly when I installed another plugin (Nik Sharpener) this corrected the buZZ problem and I stopped getting the buZZ error message. However, in CS4, installing Nik Sharpener did not sort out the buZZ problem. I have no idea why.

It's not the end of the world because I can still use the buZZ plugin but it's a nuisance - compounded by the fact that buZZ settings are not staying from one buZZ use to another. Perhaps this inability to keep the last settings used is related to a failure to save to a dat file.

Sorry this is so vague. I'd be very happy to get any ideas on what's happening and a solution.

Thanks.

@Brooke

There is no support for PS 7 at all. This is because it is from 2002.

Try creating a new admin account on the same computer

Control Panel>User Accounts

Make sure it has Admin Privileges and try to install from that user.

It's the retail shrink wrapped box and I'm able to register the serial
number on the Adobe web site.

Pirates have shrink wrap thingys now. and if you can't install it how do you know you can register it?

Also PS7 is not even in the Upgrade path for the newest version CS4.

THE ANSWER

In order to get into Safe Mode I needed to remove my USB keyboard and mouse and replace them with the PS2 interface versions. Note: to get into Safe Mode you can:
1) press F8 just at the end of the BIOS, but this only works with a PS2 keyboard on older computers.
2) Modify the Boot.ini file to include a second operating system, namely Safe Mode, but this only works if the up/down keyboard keys are operational.
3) Modify msconfig for Safe Mode boot. This does allow getting into Safe Mode and there you can run Photoshop 7 setup.exe from the C: drive, but you can NOT fill in the serial number with a USB keyboard. Once the PS2 inputs were in place the install worked fine.

When PS7 was run the first time it suggested that the scratch file for PS should be on a separate drive from Windows cache, so that's on the list of things to do.

There may be a difference between running in my normal mode where I'm the only user AND have administrator privileges and running in Safe Mode.

Have Fun,

Brooke

Hi Buko:

I know it can be registered because it did it.
Note you can register a product from the Support Portal web page directly without having it installed on your computer. I did that since in order to get install support you first need to have your product registered. But after a successful registration it still did not show up, maybe I needed to wait longer for their computer to update.

In any case after getting PS7 installed and running the first time I took the registration option and there could see all my registered Adobe software.

Have Fun,

Brooke

Hi Dave,

Thank you for a thoughtful reply ; so refreshing!

Yup - been through all those things (especially 59 - 60 refresh) but the issue still arises. It is odd that deselecting OpenGL solved them.

I am going to try more tweaking later this weekend.

Fortunately, I buil my own PCs and always go for far more power than I can reasonably need and stick fans in every orifice :)

Might give the DirectX / .NET a pop though - nice lateral thought (not sure it affects OpenGL but worth a try).

Best regaqrds,

Mike

David

I think there may be a grain of truth in what you say in that many of us are Photoshop users with regards to digital photography, but aren't power users of the software. Up until CS4 came out - a decent spec PC with a good dose of RAM and a decent processor/graphics card would run the software without drama. Regulars are probably more power users and much more gemmed up on the properties of various motherboards and graphics set ups.

My PC is just over 18 months old, and was spec'd to run CS2/CS3 which it did without a fuss. It wasn't an off-the-shelf system, but was built by a company that allowed customers to specify much of what went into the box. My laptop is just coming up to a year old and had the best laptop graphics available at that time, which just happened to be nVidia.

My system is 'clean' in that it's kept fully patched, cleaned and defragged regularly and has the minimum of superfluous software on there. So those of us who are users rather than very computer savvy do our best to spec our PC with a bit of future proofing built in, but occasionally we will get caught out.

Joanne

Yup, David, that's about it.

Laptops are a whole other can of worms here. I consider myself lucky that my hp laptop runs CS4 well, because if it didn't there wouldn't be much I could do about it. The graphics card is a NVidia 8600, but hp has modified it to the point that NVidias driver won't work. I have to feed it hps own driver - the latest being 6 months old and counting.

When I bought it, that laptop had well over twenty "helpful" little gadgets that would autostart on boot-up. It's now down to four.

Donald,

It's alright, I've taken my pills and I feel a lot better now.
I shouldn't have used the word 'hurt', I should have used the word 'disappoint'.

there are times where shooting something better is easier

You are correct, but this isn't one of them. I like her pose and her colours and with a darkened background this should make her stand out.

Now DON'T you go and be upset - I know the photo you have posted is only an example. That is the type of photo I don't want to do.
The background is too bold, it competes with the figure.

Most of my photos of my grandchildren are outdoors in bright sunlight.
This particular photo that I posted allows me to try and do a 'moody' photo. I still think her colours are great and the dark background would compliment her.

Donald thank you very much for your contribution to this topic.
Now I will compliment you.
I am desperate to know how you cut her out of the background (hair and all) ?
What magic button did you press?
Can I get one?

My example is a rather poor one that was done in a minute using a layer mask. it is not as good as your eye might think. just use a soft edge brush. For people photos,i would suggest you go out in overcast/soft light to do your shots instead of sunlight.

Torben: try disabling your anti-virus software and then re-launch CS4 - that may be what's slowing you down.

Some users have reported performance issues due to 3rd party plug-ins being installed and loaded. One thing to check -if you're experiencing the lag and if you haven't already - is to try disabling any 3rd party plug-ins you may be loading in CS4. Make sure in PS prefs that CS4 is not pointing to your CS3 plug-ins folder. This can also trigger all sorts of stability problems.

a)re: built for XP64 - note that I said "gave the [erroneous] impression," meaning that someone could plausibly infer that PSCS4 64 will not run reliably on XP 64, which is categorically untrue. I am NOT saying that there are not people who have had problems and will continue having problems with PS CS4 on XP 64.* However, I am personally attesting - having worked with PS CS on my XP 64 system a lot since buying it this week, including continuously since I reinstalled last night ( I tend to work at night) - that PS CS4 runs gloriously on XP 64, INCLUDING the OpenGL stuff once you patch the reg via the link I posted (which, by the way, would have been a valid answer to my question).

On that note, telling me stuff that I already know is NOT a valid answer. Further, as we have seen, my running this on XP 64, as opposed to Vista, was irrelevant, if only (but not really only) because that is not the system to which my question referred. How did telling me about Vista help? If you don't know what to do with XP 64, then you don't know....I didn't know either, at least when I posed my question. Your reference to Vista was POINTLESS.

b) re: installing to non-default directory. I have been doing this for so long that I can't remember not doing it, and I have never, ever had a problem like this, and I do have other dual-bit depth apps. This should be a non-issue. If I thought it was relevant I would have mentioned it, but in light of what I just said, it did not seem to be a factor. Crikey- CS3 is in that same directory! Why would Adobe's installer get confused? They are the same structures, i.e. %disk%:\Program Files, %disk%:\Program Files (x86). If you knew things that might cause my problem - you didn't-you might have asked about my install.... Instead, you told me what anyone who had read my question would already know that I knew, namely that there would be two different locations for the two different versions. Incidentally, and here's good intel here, when you do get them both installed, you get BOTH versions listed in your Adobe CS4 whatever edition programs folder. Right there! So, if you had known what you were on about, you would have realized that there was NO WAY that PS 32 was mysteriously hiding somewhere. This is another clue that you knew nothing about the subject you were purportedly answering!

So why, why, why am I picking on you? Because there was a time when you could post a simple question on the internets and some helpful soul would take the time to actually read and consider the question before giving an answer that, even if not ultimately fruitful, was at least in the freaking ballpark. But those days are gone** and even though I know that and I expect nothing, I posted anyway, and along came you, with two heaping helpings of SQUAT in terms of useful advice. What the hey? Are you that bored that you just dole out crappy advice? Watch more TV or something!

Jeez!

Thanks,
Paul

* My relevant system specs are as follows, for those who may want to give XP 64 a shot: and/or are having problems: XP 64 SP2 ( there is no SP3 for 64 and parenthetically I will note that CS4 on XP 32 SP2 runs fine even though you get a warning on install that it is supposed to have SP3 installed)
8 GB RAM
AMD 64X2 5600 on AMD/ATI 780G Chipset with dual integrated ATI 3200 Graphic plus an extra ATI 3400 card running three different monitors (2 on the 3200 and one on the 3400). On my setup PS likes to enable and actually work with the OpenGL stuff when I launch either/or the 64 or 32 bit version on the monitor that is attached to the 3400 card. After that I can drag the app anywhere I want and it works.

* * in July, as myself and my girlfriend were getting ready for our vacation, we posted on a location-specific travel group to ask if people knew if the hotel we were staying at had a safe for our laptop. We got like thirteen responses, all more or less to the effect that we should leave the laptop at home when we go on vacation. Not ONE answer about the hotel! WTF???

I'm using Vista 32. After updating to CS4 I can no longer open jpg files directly into PS by clicking on the file in windows explorer or an e-mail. After much searching and looking for file associations, I was able to get jpgs to open into Bridge from windows explorer, but still cannot get them to open directly in PS. When I attempt to open a jpg from an e-mail message, I get a window in Bridge pointed to a temp folder. I did not have this problem with CS3, but am really at a loss for a fix. Anyway know what to do???

TIA,

Fran
