Thanks. Yes, the pen not working at all has been reported in the Wacom forum and the suggestion made to use the earlier 4.93 driver instead of the most recent one. I have not tried this myself but some who have say that it does not help, and in any case, CS4 does not like the older driver.
The suggestion I got when I raised this in the Wacom forum - my first port of call - was that it was a Photoshop brush controls issue. But I don't think it is.
It's infuriating because you can get a long way into a wash using a continuous stroke and suddenly the paint just stops. Never happened in CS3.
I suppose it could be a hardware issue but it is odd that it happens in the same circumstances each time.

No, its more likely a driver issue than a hardware fault. You may find that you have to go back to CS3 for a while until Wacom update the drivers again

Well, Maya often stores additional info in OBJ files that may need stripping off (OBJs are just ASCII, so any text editor will do). Has been bugging me all my life as a 3D artist... Short of that, I could only think of wrongly associated vertex/ polygon groups. If you can provide a sample, it should be possible to get to the bottom of this.

A reinstall has fixed things (I went ahead and tried that, being the traditional Completely Lame Yet Regrettably Effective solution). Same file, it works now.
And how I love that the uninstall and install both demand that you not run your browser while they grind away for an hour or so.... that makes this oft-suggested solution so much more pleasant.

I have a pic of an older washer/dryer combo with a white finish and
would like to know the easiest way to give them a more modern gray
metallic finish. All techniques appreciated, thanks.

when you paste anything>> it automatically creates another layer above the
selected layer or background
you can drag from open document to another or use cut and paste for putting
all or parts of an image onto a layer
you can click the little paper at bottom to create an empty layer and use
fill to make a solid color layer, put a gradient, make a shape on, etc.

The fact is that it would be nearly impossible to manage all of the old
versions...it was fine when there were only 5 or so earlier versions to
worry about but that's not the case anymore.

You dismiss that way too easily, Dave. Think about what it would take to
manage it. Not as easy as you'd like to think.

What Bob said. Retailers hate excess SKUs. Having to stock five different upgrades to CS5 would drive them nuts. Adobe themselves could do it, but they are pretty committed to supporting retailers (the few legitimate ones, that is). I suspect they get a big chunk of their sales through those channels.

Hi
when you select the warp tool etc you get in the tools options bar a square made of nine dots and you can select one.
I thought it selected an anchor point but it appears not.
Can someone tell me the correct name for this "square" so I can search the help files and web
thanks

There is no warp tool in photoshop;) That box is to control the origin of the transformation but it doesn't work when your warping, that's just a leftover from the transform commands option bar options

Ah ha that explains why I couldn't see any effect.
Ok question the second. ;-)
If I create a rectangle and then select image transform warp the bounding box changes dividing the rectangle into nine boxes.
I want to warp just the six boxes to the left but leave the three on the right untouched. Is there a way to lock these boxes?
thanks

I don't think so, but you could just select a smaller area to begin with, one that is only 2/3 the size of what you originally selected.

I found a workaround in CS3 for those of us with reversed mouse-buttons. Click the titlebar first with the secondary button, and still holding it down now click with the primary button. Holding both buttons down now you should now be able to drag around the window.

When I load Nik Software plugins into CS 4 it is not possible to use the "N Up" display options for tabbed document windows. The top part of the drop down box is simply blank. Adobe seems to be aware of this issue which perhaps not unreasonably they regard as Nik's problem. Has anyone found a solution to this issue? Many thanks

actually that article isn't that great, they should have tested the same system but with and without GPU acceleration and not completely different systems. And the systems tested were mostly crap. Look at the "mid range" system, it uses a Intel Extreme processor with a 790i motherboard and only 2gb ram? Only 4gb or ram on the "high end" system? And look at those pathetic drives, they used 250gb per platter drives, those are ancient, they're two generations behind.
