For some reason Ctrl + Click for layer select does not work any more or should I say properly. When I use Ctrl + Click instead of going to the layer it only jumps to the folder containing that element rather than the layer it's self. This does not help because I use a lot of folders to keep things organized. Is this new with CS4 or is something not working? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Select the Move tool and in the Options bar change the dropdown from Group to Layer, that should fix it

You sound confused alright. It's also interesting to see you are
confusing about thing you don't seem to know what's about.

Cuz, the XMP stands next to the PSD not because it wants to stand next to
PSD, but because the PSD just happen to be there. Or it still be there if
there is no PSD. And the XMP is the information of the modified RAW file
which has nothing to do with the PSD

If you don't think it's unnecessary then just delete the XMP to see if
it's unnecessary or not.

Yes, the adjustments are stored in the PSD file and any sidecar XMP file is going to be ignored.

Lightroom uses an older build of the color conversion engine, and doesn't have all the options Photoshop does (like the scene referred rendering compensation).

I have installed the new CS4 upgrade, and I have disabled the GPU. I have just upgraded to 2MB of RAM. However, PSD CS4 will suddenly shut down without warning at unpredictable times - yesterday it happened when I zoomed in past 200% - today it happened when I hit Save For Web. Really annoying. Any ideas?

Thanks
Charles

And occasionally on shutting down Photoshop I get this error:

Photoshop.exe Application Error

The instruction at "0x21d82b3" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate program.

Doesn't happen with Dreamweaver or any other program.

Check your memory

You can check your ram with the Microsoft memory diagnostic test. It will
readily identify if the ram sticks are bad.
However the problems you are experiencing are more likely software related:
two programs are asking for the same memory space.
Frequently this is due to a corrupt video driver so installing the latest
video driver may help.
After that start turning off background programs and processes until you
find the offender.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I was able to revive the clone tool by uninstalling the WACOM tablet
and reinstalling it with updated drivers. It would not have occurred to me to connect the tablet with the problem. Maybe it was the driver; maybe not. But it's working now. So thanks again.

I just signed up for the Adobe User Forums a week or so ago when I had a problem with the clone tool in Photoshop CS3. I asked my question and then left town for a week. When I got back I had 4 responses. So Curt Young, John Joslin, Eric@MCA and Michael D. Sullivan, many thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Ooops, I spoke too soon, sorry. No, that method only rotates the selection 'boundary', ie the marching ants line surrounding the chosen area, it doesn't rotate the clump of pixels within the boundary, which is what I was trying to do.

As I said, after making a selection, Edit > Free Transform will do what I want, and rotate the selected area OK, but it leaves a hole in the image.

Perhaps I can explain it like this; Let's say I have an image that includes a tree. I want to grab that vertical tree and rotate it 90 degrees and use it to patch a horizontal area, perhaps a hedge.

Any other suggestions?

Try this then, make a selection and then drag it while holding Ctrl and Alt. That will create a floating selection which you can transform using Free Transform and then drop it with the Patch tool set on Destination

So, it sounds like I need to purchase a calibration device that calibrates the luminance (shouldn't have purchased the Spyder Pro3) and purchase a monitor that is designed more specifically for sensitive, photo developing - as opposed to general use.

I don't think setting a target luminance is as important as all that. The important thing is to not have it too bright and not all monitors are able to lower their brightness enough to be useful. Some folks find that raising the room brightness helps compensate for overly bright monitors that cannot be turned down any lower.

One problem with overly bright monitors is that dark images will appear too bright on screen and the prints end up too dark compared to what you see. I good tip is to view your image on a white background (or at least a 2-3" white border) when evaluating them, as viewing them on gray makes them look brighter than they really are. Your Spider might be fine, though I prefer the Eye-One. Just turn your monitor brightness down as much as possible.

Here's a link with lots of monitor info re: what's what:

Even with the crt, when I open a file, I go full screen then roll it back with the scroll wheel. That puts a nice white border around the image. But, if you plan to show a print with other than a white matt, you should use that color for the surround.

Why the heck was this removed?! I used it all the time in CS3 for vector mask layers. What crazy person would have removed a perfectly useful feature without replacing it with an alternative that's at least as good? I don't want to have to go through all of this scripting or have to build an action to achieve the same thing that was a basic feature in a previous version. I'm utterly confounded.
