CS3, OS 10.4.11, G5 PPC, 8 GB RAM

In PS' File Handling Preferences, Maximize Compatibility, I have selected Always, but I am not seeing the Preview image in the column view of the HD. Sometimes, it appears that a small selection is displayed, although before saving, selections have been deselected.

If the Preview image is not a function of Maximize Compatibility, how do I show previews of my images in column view(the icons are shown).

Do the files that don't show icons contain Alpha Channels?

If you use Bridge instead of the Finder and you will no longer have that problem.

What settings in the 'save as' dialogue for tiffs that would be recommended for use as archives and masters for prints? Image compression: LZW or ZIP and for Layer compression: ZIP or RLE?
Thanks
Jonathan

ZIP and ZIP

Any compression will encounter problems if bits get mangled over time - but ZIP gets better compression.

My guess is that your data is fragmented all over your Hard Drive;
your Directories are overwritten and corrupt;
and that you don't have a large enough dedicated Scratch Drive.

But you don't want to hear it!

I believe Disk Warrior only rebuilds the disk directory which, of course is a huge benefit. But it does not defrag the hard drive.

DW does just rebuild the Directories — but they can easily become corrupt with over-written data.

Whenever I try to create a new file by pressing CMD-N, Photoshop gives me a default file type of 32x32px 72ppi 1-bit Bitmap. The preset is "clipboard". This is when there is no image in the clipboard. If I copy something to the clipboard CMD-N works as usually and gives those specifications. But never when the clipboard is empty.

This is not a huge thing but I do this dozens of times a day and if I don't notice that I'm creating a 1-bit file, I can't even directly convert to RGB but have to go through grayscale to correct the mistake.

If anyone knows how I can get PS to default to RGB, I would be very grateful for the information!

That is because you have something (an icon perhaps?) of 32x32px saved on your Clipboard.

Use Cmd N
Change the size/mode/resolution etc. that you want (or choose "Custom" in the Presets pop-up menu).

You can then Save your choice as a new Preset.

You could make a preset: see here. <http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-7901a.htmlhttp://help.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop/11.0/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-7901a.html>

Photoshop remembers the last used size unless there is something on the clipboard

I imagine that he did have something in his Clipboard because the "New" dialog came-up with "Clipboard" pre-selected.

I think that Converting to a different Color Space may always flatten by default unless you use the Edit menu/Convert … method and turn off the Check Box.

I don't know how to do that — but I don't really want either the progress bar or the Refresh Button in the Tool Bar anyway.

(I haven't added any of the optional buttons to the Tool Bar because I do everything via keyboard shortcuts anyway.)

I was only exploring the Tool Bar options out of curiosity because of this thread!

We're still gathering evidence, but the actual crashes on save are deep in Apple code.

Please include an option to disable the productivity killing (not to mention time wasting and annoying) multi touch rotate feature in Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Huh? There already is a way to disable that in 11.0.1 (because Apple didn't include a way to disable it, or even understand the problem they introduced).

For Cs4, you need to use the plug-in:
<http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4337>

There is a bug in our database to put options in the UI, and further investigate making this feature more robust.

Chris,

Pointing fingers isn't creating any solutions and doesn't look very professional.

Nobody is pointing fingers, just trying to explain the problem and solution.

Explaining the origins of the problem; and telling you that Adobe has already provided you with a fix for something that was NOT of their making; is hardly "unprofessional finger-pointing"!

PicturePackage certainly works for me in both Bridge and Photoshop CS4 but I am working on OSX 10.4.11 which may (or may not!) make a difference.

Are you sure that you installed it correctly and have you relaunched photoshop since installing Picture Package?
