Hi,

If this is not possible, I have another question: can I somehow calculate the mean/average luminance of a picture? In that case I can compare my pictures and see which ones are really deviant from the rest.

Mariska,

here are some hints:

1. Color space: Lab .
2. Measuring: Histogram, channel L, mean value.
Don't forget to update the calculation, mainly
if a warning appears.
3. Area: either the whole image or a selection
of the face.
4. Editing: Because of the available selection it's
not difficult to keep the background white and to
adjust the lightness of the face by a Curve (L).

More advanced methods which don't require accurate
selections are explained here:

Blur... average and you can set the color sampler to show LAB and then watch the L. Or set the sampler to 101 x 101 and just scrub around.

Hopefully, it's something they're working on.

I print a lot of photo realistic graphics and I'm using an HP 800PS. Which print processor will deliver the best quality and/or speed? It seems to take a very long time from the time I submit the job until it actually starts printing. All settings on the printer are correct, I'm just wondering if I should be using another processor.

Here are my Options:
MS_XPS
Raw
XPS_PASS

ModiPrint
Raw
NT EMF 1.006
NT EMF 1.007
NT EMF 1.008

WinPrint
Raw
Raw [FF appended]
Raw [FF auto]
NT EMF 1.003

Hi,
Sorry for the delay,

Still unable to install CS4. (did the deletes and install). I Finally heard from Microsoft and they are sending SP1 on a Disk (free).
At present I am reformatting my computer to "factory original".

My other computer already had SP1 and CS4 installed perfectly.

This problem computer is a March-2008 HP Laptop. Must have just missed the SP1 update.
So I'll just wait for the disk. (544.3MB)
I'll let you know the result.

P.S. He said to disable all Blockers and Anti Virus programs before running
update.

Have a Fine Day,
Riley

Gail,

Would you mind e-mailing me at da49gator-email@yahoo.com about your sole post (#19)? I have a further question, not of general interest. Given Bob Levine's concern about the amusing but not necessarily helpful banter getting out of control, I want to avoid starting a chain reaction of notifications and posts.

The 8 bit option is checked the 16 bit option is grayed out.

Any answer as to why I have to go to the control panel / display/ settings and change to 32 bit color each time I bring Photoshop up?

there are a bunch of limitations on gif. no layers. 8 bit. indexed color mode. no more than 256 colors.

Any answer as to why I have to go to the control panel / display/ settings

why wouldn't you be in 32 bit color all the time anyway?

Hi Rob,
I've uploaded one of the images to my server....
<http://www.iphotos.co.uk/downloads/tmp/FA0309A-E02305.zip> (30Mb download).

I wouldn't say that the "image" is corrupt - the "image" is fine and in fact "Save As" to a new filename corrects the problem altogether. What I would say is that PS CS3 isn't handling the metadata in some of my images correctly. I use a lot of different programs to view/edit/update both image and metadata. PS CS3 is ONLY program I have found that has any problem with the files.

Anyhow, please download the zip file and extract the PSD to a suitable location. Then open the image in PS CS3 from that location. Make a minor edit to the image and you will see that PS CS3 can't save the file. Quit. Open the image again and select "File | File Info" and you will see the other error message. If you open the file and do "save as" to a new filename and repeat the above step everything works as it should.

If this was just a single file that I was having problems with I'd put up with the work round of "Save as" to correct the problem. But with 25,000+ PSD files and at a guess a random 10% of my files being affected you can imagine how frustraiting this is.

Thanks,
Ian.

Ian,

I downloaded the file, and I get the same errors as you do. Both on CS3 and CS4. It must be something with the file, but I don't know what.

Nothing wrong in the metadata as far as I can see in Bridge and in Lightroom.

It simply won't save.

I think someone should analyse this file to see what it is.

In the meantime check a PSD file of mine. See if it has errors on your side.

<http://www.faces-and-stuff.nl/Forum/sample.zip>

But I suspect the files, since they cause errors on two computers.

Rob

This one is totally legit. I admet I took a program from a friend who offered it to me (the disc, not a copy) when he decides that Gimp is a better program for him. I didn't even know it was wrong. Isn't it like buying a book and letting someone else have it when you're done?

But I don't ever download crap into my computer. I don't even download freebie software from "safe" websites that only offer honorable programs that are free. Unless it's absolutely needed like Acrobat Reader.

Besides, it was hard enough to hide the computer under my jacket. I don't think I could pull that one off in the same store again. So I have to really take care of this baby.
