I would guess that there's some kind of problem with contiguous space. You should run some defragmentation on that hard drive. 10gb may be a small amount of space left for scratch for most people, but certainly not for a 500 pixel square image. I can't think of any reason that the OS and Photoshop would use up all that space for an image that small.

why isn't Adobe more specific about it?

Even Adobe is confused. Student licenses did not appear until CS3. This is new territory for them.

It is unlikely that any student will be prosecuted for not fully understanding a license in regard to commercial use (or for Adobe's failure to explain their licensing more clearly). However, if anyone seeks a student or education license with the clear intent to abuse it (I'm not saying anyone in the present conversation is), they should not waste their money on a purchased, discount license. It is no better than a free pirated copy.

There would be zero reason for the student edition to exist if it didn't
carry any restrictions above the regular academic version.

If you want to do commercial work, then buy the academic version, not
the student version.

There's the worry. Why do they still offer the 'education' version? Adobe is severely confused and it does not help customers. A student customer from the US should get the licensing explained in writing. A verbal explanation on the phone from Adobe customer service or sales is useless.

The student version is actually a spin off of a volume licensing program that has been offered to educational institutions for a long time. That volume license

* prohibited resale or transfer
* limited installation to only one computer (and that had to be owned by
the institution - a separate education license had to be purchased by educators
to run on their own home computers)
* prohibited commercial use

Photo Story 3 <http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/PhotoStory/default.mspx> answers your wishes exactly as described in post #3. And it is free.

This is Microsoft's answer to iPhoto, which does the same slideshow function on Mac.

What reason does Narked have to suspect a faulty video card? He's having the exact same issues as the rest of us who purchased this clunky turd.

Narked:

When you built your computer did you update directx 9.c? Vista may use directx 10.1 (after sp1 update) but it also uses directx 9c to run a ton of software. Updating 9c does not effect directx 10 in Vista in any way.

Also .net update to 3.5 may help you. There is also a update for C++ for 2008.

Have you been reading this thread? There are 720 posts on here so far. I can't take the time to count just how many of them are individual complaints about the same performance issues that render the software virtually unusable. The errors seem to have nothing to do with any specific hardware on the part of the user. ATI cards, nVidia cards, XP, Vista, laptops, desktops, you name it.

Just because you personally are not having issues doesn't mean that there aren't an inordinate number of people who are.

Freeagent, from what your saying, it sounds like I need a decent size 2nd harddrive if I will be storing images on there. I'm assuming it would just need to store images I'm working on though...
Would I see a huge difference between 7200 and 10k Rpm for the 2nd drive that will be the scratch disk? how about 16mb vs 32 cache?
I would like to keep the 2nd drive somewhere below $200.00 if possible. Suggestions for a drive? I have Sata2 connections...

Bob,
I think 64 bit is the way to go once Windows 7 comes out. I"m not really sure I trust the stability of Vista enough to move up to 64 bit. I already have enough problems with 32 bit.... The good thing is my Mobo supports both which is great....

Well, you asked for feedback and you got it. I think you're making a
mistake putting together a rig like that and going 32 bit Vista.

How does this look? Any problems you see with this? Do you think it will work with Sata2 connections? Not sure because it just says SATA...not sure of the difference.

Bob,
I can always switch later can't I or would I need to buy all new components?

Bob,
The more I read about Vista 64, the more it seems like you may be right, this may be a good move. My question is, do I run the risk of lots of programs not working? Also, I have no idea of what is involved in moving to a 64 bit system. Do I have to uninstall and reinstall everything? Does MS provide an update service to keep me from haivng to totally reinstall everything? Will all my components above give me problems...are compoenets built specificalaly for 32 bit systems? Sorry for the barrage of questions Bob, but you now have me thinking this may be a good idea...

I had misgivings about moving to Vista. I only did it for the benefit of 64-bit Photoshop. However, not only do all my 32-bit applications and peripherals work but also, after the shock of the new wore off, have grown to like it and its improvements over clunky old XP.

@ John Joslin and Anthony.Ralph

Just a quick update to advise that both Classroom in a Book and Martin Evenings book arrived a little earlier today. First impressions - very very good and appear to be just what I was after. Right then - Chapter 1 :-)

Oh by the way, I turned OFF F1 automatically connecting to the web but now consider it might be useful after all. Trouble is, I can't remember how I turned it off :-( (read in another thread somewhere?), any pointers please? :-)
