I purchased the demos of these products and one of the first things I tried was working between Illustrator and Photoshop, something I do regularly in CS3.
Right away I noticed a huge graphical glitch when pasting an object from illustrator into Photoshop. Most of the time the object, when pasted, is invisible, has no bounding box, and creates a black messy frame around the document's window. Usually some part of this distortion affects other windows outside of photoshop and my desktop.
Here's one example of what it looks like.
<http://img253.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture2ww1.png>
No idea where the yellow frame inside my document came from, also a glitch.
I'm using an iMac that's a couple years old: Nvidia 7800GT, 2.33 GHZ Intel Core Duo, 2 GB DDR2 SDRAM. Could there be a problem with my computer?

For one thing when You maintain Photoshop Editability in the pdf the file-size increases and You might not want to pass Your complete layered file on to Your customers.

Would Image/Mode/Bitmap.../Halftone Screen... be sufficently accurate? Might have to up your image resolution to make sure the dots are round enough.
If this is for press, you should really be outputting as a spot channel to a Postscript device and controlling it from the Print/Screen... dialogue as this will use the output device's native reolution to create the halftone dots.

Here's the thing I discovered last night about the "Schaflining process, though...

It was originally developed to simulate an increase in tonal range for images printed on newsprint. There's more to it than just running it through a halftone filter or effect.
I don't have the time or inclination to experiment and research to figure out the best way to simulate the process digitally.

It also pays to take a look at the results of good photography, photographic techniques, and their commercial application in respected graphic design publications such as "Communication Arts" and "Print".

It's not so much about WHERE we learned something but it's entirely about the fact that we learned it at all!

Some of the "Vanity Press" book publishers seem to be demanding JPEGs but I agree with Jim: if a Printer won't accept PDFs, find another printer or publishing house.

The printer has since advised that it's always advisable to format text
in Illustrator and import to Photoshop. Is this true?
No. It doesn't make a difference.

I think the suggestion is based on the fact that vector (Iluustrator) based text is sharp regardless of documant size, where as rasterised text relies on having a high enough resolution for sharpness. As Jim Jordan sugested, don't rasterize the type in Photoshop. I've produced countless book covers and print jobs with text using Photoshop, no problem.
Also I'm with those above who say ditch a printer who won't/can't deal with pdf's or p.s.d's for that matter.

I agree too that "changing the Printer" is a possible solution, but the boss might say "Change the Designer" if "he can't get it right".
Keep in mind that not rasterizing type in PS requires the file to be saved in an EPS format.

The printer has confirmed that they can accept pdfs but these will be converted to Jpeg prior to printing so the final outcome will be the same.
I'm working at a resolution of 300dpi.
Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.

OK, would a layered TIFF or PSD work too? I've never tried it.
Is that what you're thinking Jim?

Why?????
What on earth are they printing with?
Even an Inkjet can print directly from a PDF so that the Type is rasterized at the resolution of the output device on output (perhaps at 1400 dpi or greater).
Converting text to a 300 ppi JPEG before output is not only ridiculous but also shows total ineptitude by the print house operators.

Glad you zapped that thing into shape. I often forget about a good zapping. Hope things go okay.

BTW, if you have your keyboard language displayed ("Show input menu in menu bar" as a flag, top right, adjacent to the time) you can click on it to access the glyphs palette ("Show Character Palette"), without opening Preferences.

6. Can't I just make the background transparent, flatten the image, and
then drag the circle over to Indesign without the white square background
showing up?
No, once you flattened the image you'll loose transparency.

when you make your profile with your calibrator the last step in the process automatically selects the new monitor profile for your system. Now Photoshop will use it. You don't do a thing with it.

Emily,
As a reminder, when you calibrate, be sure you select 2.2 gamma and 6500°K temperature.
