Being on digest makes quoting tedious, but this topic is a combination
of the Elements and ACR posts. Thanks for the previous answers.
For me the two are connected. I have CS3 and LR 2, but don't want to
upgrade to CS4.
If Elements offers the latest ACR (and layers and channels), it would
save me a lot of money. For me, upgrading to CS4 is nearly 1K (with the
suite you can't pick and choose which modules to upgrade, it's all or
nothing). The latest version of ACR has a few things missing in LR (a
big thing being RGB channel info in numbers vs %).
LR2 works well for many things, but the absence of layers and channels
makes it useless for heavy-duty photo editing.
Rather than ask more questions I'll download a trial copy of Elements.
