I have a Targus portable lapdesk (similar to this:
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PA243U), about $35
US 4 years ago. It's really just a thin hinged plastic piece, but it
works well. It closes for transport, but opens and locks into a wedge
shape to lift the notebook off the table. It has small rubber feet to
prevent scratching any surfaces and for stability. Worked well for
about 4 years. It can also open flat and work as a lap desk.
Keeps the notebook running cool and raises the keyboard to a slight
angle.
