Xterm is a program that emulates a VT100 terminal. A shell is a command
interpreter which often uses a terminal for input/output.

An xterm terminal is colour terminal, the vt100 is monochrome.

Depends on the xterm program. The *original* XAW xterm program (the
one *I* use) is 'monochrome', in the sense that there is only two main
colors user (text (forwground) and background), plus the color for the
cursor box/block, although you can set the 'colors' used to whatever
you want. So the *original* XAW xterm program is almost exactly like a
VT102 (and can also emulate a Tektronix 4014 (vector graphics
terminal)). Most modern xterminal program (eg gnome-terminal) are more
like a colored ANSI terminal.

This will irk the purists, but install the wonderfully simple
"startup-manager" and do it from the full glory of a bloated desktop
windowing enviroment, such as Gnome.

Jesus Christ dudes all that is needed to to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and set
default to the correct entry (number).

try sudo vi /boot/grub/menu.lst

What is so hard about that?

Jon Stanley
- on -
Rolling Your Own Linux With Fedora

Please join us for possibly the last NYLUG meeting any time soon*,
and pizza, on Wednesday, April 15th, 2009 at 6:30 PM.

Have you ever wanted to make your own custom remix of Linux that suits
*your* needs, rather what someone else decided your needs might be?
It's easier to do this with Fedora Linux than you probably think.

First, we'll talk about why you might want to roll your own customized
distribution of Linux, and then all of the the Open Source tools you'll use
to do this with Fedora, (livecd-creator, pungi), and which tool to choose.

Then we'll actually perform the process for a livecd, and use the USB
creation tools to put that on a USB stick, and then give away that USB
stick to a lucky audience member :)

Then, courtesy of Fedora, there will be pizza!

Jon will also have assorted Fedora swag (stickers, some buttons, a few
shirts, media, etc).

About Jon Stanley:
Jon Stanley is a NYLUG member, and a Fedora Ambassador, and can be found
at FUDcons, LUG meetings, and in various channels on IRC, and is on the
Fedora Engineering Steering Committee. His blog can be seen here or on
Planet NYLUG.

Meeting Location:
Please note that this meeting will be held at IBM, 590 Madison Ave,
12th floor, corner of 57th Street, and not at Google. This is
the building with the IBM logo on the front of the building.

Map:

Books!!!
Our friends at Prentice-Hall kindly provide us with review copies
of various new titles. One of these could be yours, all you have
to do is agree to review the book within a reasonable period of
time.

Swag (Give Away):
During/after the meeting... unusually terrific Fedora swag will
be given away.

Stammtisch:
After the meeting ... You may wish to join up with other NYLUGgers
over at TGI Fridays located at 677 Lexington Avenue and 56th
Street, second floor. Northeast corner.

Python Workshops:
We are rounding up a group that wants to learn about Python.
This would be a great time to attend our workshop, whether you
are just starting with Python or use it professionally.

The workshops meet every other Tuesday, at the NY Public Library,
Hudson Park Branch. 66 Leroy St. NY NY from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Next meetings are April 14, followed by April 28.
See the calendar at: http://nylug.org/pythoncalendar

TOPIC: DDS-2 Tape drive -- setting density

I have a 4mm tape drive that I'm told is DDS-2.

It identifies itself as an Archive Python 04687-XXX 6610 drive.
(The fron panel says Seagate.)

However, "mt -f /dev/st0 status" shows it set to DDS-1 (0x13),
and if I try to change the density to DDS-2, by
"mt -f /dev/st0 setdensity 0x24", it gives me an error message.

Setting it to density 0x13 gives no error.

I did notice that if I put a DDS-1 cassette in, it gets errors
when it tries to write or read the tape. I don't know if it's
because the tape is kaput or if the drive can't handle
a DDS-1 tape.

Also, I can't figure out whether "mt -f /dev/st0 compression 1" does
anything -- is there a command to show whether compression
is on?

I forgot to mention: this is a RedHat 9 system (kernel 2.4.20-6)

Do you know the drive's any good? IME those drives are really prone to
failure - and all sorts of odd things can happen when they go bad :-(

Hi,

Is there a way to define the target name as a dependency (after
changing the extension)? In System V make one can use "$$@" to do so.
How can I get this done with GNU Make.

Thanks a lot for any hint,

I am capturing ATSC streams via an HDHomeRun tuner, and would like
to convert them to something with an h.264 encoding. Everything I see
shows examples of splitting out audio, reencoding the audio, muxing,
and converting via about ten different utilities.

Is there any reasonably simple way to do the conversion from the
command line, so it can be automated?

I found this on google

"I've been able to update to the latest forcedeth 0.60 in the following
way I'm going to describe.

Before all:
-I'm using kernel 2.6.15-27-amd64-k8, so change version numbers
accordingly to yours;

1)Download latest nvidia nforce package
2)For Dapper, I suggest you using forcedeth.c file contained under
Fedora5 folder of the downloaded package
3)Install build-essential plus linux-headers-2.6.15-27-amd64-k8
4)Copy forcedeth.c into some folder, e.g. /home/willytp/forcedeth
5)Into this folder, make a file called "Makefile" containing the
following line:
obj-m := forcedeth.o
6)Into this folder, execute the following command:
make -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.15-27-amd64-k8/ SUBDIRS=$PWD modules
7)Copy the just created forcedeth.ko module into
/lib/modules/2.6.15-27-amd64-k8/kernel/drivers/net/
overwriting the old one
8)Execute this command: sudo depmod -a
9)Make a new initrd image: go into /boot/ folder, locate your initrd
image, save it name, delete the file, and execute the following command:
mkinitramfs -o initrd.img-2.6.15-27-amd64-k8
10)Cross fingers and reboot ;)

Well you could create a makefile, or you could just do
gcc forcedeth.c -o forcedeth
and compile it directly. (That is presumably all the makefile would do.)
Once you knowit works,
cp forcedeth /usr/local/bin
chmos a+rx /usr/local/bin/forcedeth
(assuming you want anyone to be able to run it)

Its is not a an executable by itself.

I've never done any IPC coding (I have done some socket programming
however).

I'd like some feedback as to a good type of IPC to use under the
following scenerio:

platform - Linux (I really don't care about supporting any other platform)

Multiple children, all of the same parent and on the same machine, will
be communicating. There will be two different types (read: having two
different sets of responsibilities) of children. Call the two different
types of children CH1 and CH2. There can be many CH1 children and only
one CH2 child. The CH2 child will be the controlling process. All the
CH1 children will communicate in both directions with the CH2 child.
Once control is completed two CH1 children will be communicating in both
directions with each other.

Did I forget anything?

Any help is appreciated.

Without knowing what this application is really doing, I'd vote for
what I would find easiest:

Perl.

Do:

man perlipc

Well I'd prolly either use files or a mysql database..on write by one
only read by another/many basis per record.
